On Wednesday, McDonald House
hosted Gleeson’s third annual ‘Biggest Cup of Tea’ and ‘World’s
Greatest Hairspray’ to help raise vital funds for cancer research and support services.
Our aim, to put the McDonald Motto of ‘Truth, Courage & Unity’ into
action, and raise $2000 to support the Cancer Council and Leukaemia
Foundation. As a College Community, we were able to smash our goal as more than 150 staff and students
attended the event! Donations are still being collected so there is still time to contribute to our final total, which will be announced next week. This year’s function was a great success
thanks to the many wonderful helpers. The participation and excitement our students brought with them set the tone as we all enjoyed a hot drink,
some delicious food and each other’s company. Many thanks go to the
McDonald Care Group Teachers and a special thanks to Miss Ashlee Curtis
and Miss Lisa Feleppa for their support and organisation, especially for the catering provided by their amazing Food & Hospitality Classes. Thanks
to all students, staff and families who supported the occasion, we hope next year to grow the event and raise even
more much-needed funds.
“As a faith filled community we will keep those that have lost the fight, won the fight and are still fighting
Cancer in our thoughts and prayers.”
Mr Steven Hicks,McDonald House Coordinator

DON’T KEEP HISTORY A MYSTERY
DEPSLA Meeting at Gleeson CollegeA meeting of the Deputy Principals and Senior Leaders Association (DEPSLA) of Catholic secondary schools was held at Gleeson College on Tuesday this week. This is but one event that we have hosted and will host, in conjunction with the move of Year 7 into Catholic secondary schools in South Australia.
One of the elements of our presentation concerning the transition of Year 7 to secondary school was a Q&A (questions and answer) panel consisting of four Year 7 students (see photo below). They were amazing! They were able to answer questions in front of 30 school leaders with an eloquence not expected of 12 and 13 year olds. They showed an intimate knowledge of the school, their learning and the differences of being in a high school compared to a primary school. All attendees were left gobsmacked! The student panel consisted of Ava Cannard, Lachlan Cannard, Brandon Hendricks and Scarlett Hatchard. We are immensely proud of them.
A multimedia presentation and another Q&A panel of staff followed this. They were also brilliant and certainly much
appreciated by our visitors. Overall, it was an excellent meeting and a fantastic way for us to support the various Catholic schools that are taking Year 7 students into a high school setting in 2019.
National Reconciliation Week> Don’t Keep History a MysteryNational Reconciliation Week is celebrated each year from May 27 to June 3. The week is preceded by National Sorry Day on May 26. The dates commemorate two significant milestones - the anniversary of the successful 1967 referendum (where over 90 per cent of Australians voted to give the Commonwealth the power to make laws for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and recognise them in the national census. The second commemorates the High Court Mabo decision that legally recognised that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have a special relationship to the land - that existed prior to colonisation and still exists today. This decision paved the way for land rights called Native Title. Amongst other celebrations, this year some staff and students attended the ‘Reconciliation in the North’ Morning Tea, an event hosted in the Golden Grove Recreation and Arts Centre yesterday (see photo top).
I would like to share the following prayer with our community in this very important week:
Aboriginal Our FatherYou are Our Father, you live in heavenWe talk to you, Father you are good
We believe your Word FatherWe your children, give us bread today
We have done wrong, we are sorryHelp us Father not to sin again
Others have done wrong to usAnd we are sorry for them, Father today
Stop us from doing wrong, FatherSave us all from the evil one
You are Our Father, you live in heavenWe talk to you, Father you are good
- The Lord’s Prayer from the “Missa Kimberley”
Catholic Education WeekToday also marks the start of Catholic Education Week for which we have a number of events planned in Week 5. More details in The Globe next week!

DAMIANI HOUSE > Positive Thinking, Health + Wellbeing SessionOn Wednesday, Damiani House took an opportunity to stop and share in a number of enjoyable experiences. The Personal Development Program (PDP) timeslot saw students from across the Damiani Middle School Care Groups undertake three different activity rotations to promote positive thinking, health and wellbeing, while also finding the joy in their days.
Students in Years 7-9 collaborated in a balloon-building activity, which required strategy and teamwork to create a freestanding tower of balloons with limited resources available. The Middle School also engaged with some mega games, including foot-pool, mega pong, giant jenga, supersized connect four and mega tic-tac-toe, many of which were recently purchased with the support of the College’s P&F Committee.
Finally, the Middle School, after taking some time to learn about schools and schooling resources in other parts of the world, students were asked the question, “what is the best thing about our school?” They then had to decide what this was, and as a small group, capture their “best thing” as a photo to share with their peers.
Similarly, during the Senior School rotations with the Year 10-12s, students were also asked to visually define their best thing about our school, and came up with some varied and thought-provoking responses to this concept. Beyond this, students took part in some board, card and dice games to remind them to find the joy in their days, even when the stresses of their final years of schooling becomes a little overwhelming. The other stop on their cycle was a physical session on the oval, involving some trick shots with footballs, soccer balls, frisbees and vortexes - once again stressing the value of a balanced and healthy outlet when needing that break from school.
Thank you to all of the people who helped make this session run so smoothly and to the students for actively participating in all of the rotations.

YEAR 10 FOOD & HOSPITALITY > ‘Eating for Health’ Unit Showcases Veggies
In the current unit ‘Eating for Health’, the Year 10 Food and Hospitality General
Class are learning about the importance of vegetables to maintain a healthy
lifestyle and diet.
We are encouraged to eat vegetables with most meals to meet the daily
recommended five serves of vegetables, and in some places of the world it is seven serves per day! By the end of the unit students will have created a
magazine spread informing the reader of what a serve of vegetables looks like,
benefits of eating vegetables and ‘swaps’ that can be made to daily food choices.
Part of their assessment also requires them to reflect on their vegetable intake.
To support student learning we made grilled vegetable panini with pesto and capsicum relish in class. While cooking the grilled vegetables students worked in groups to investigate what a serve of vegetables looked like (raw and cooked) and then photographed them to use as
visuals on their magazine spread.
All students enjoyed making and eating the recipe, with many very surprised they actually liked the taste of the vegetables
they previously refused to try!

YEAR 12 FOOD & HOSPITALITY > Adelaide Hills Fresh Food-Fest!Year 12 Food and Hospitality students
enjoyed a ‘foodies’ day out at the Adelaide Hills last week.
Local chefs from the Seasonal Garden in Hahndorf (Chef Zana) and The Locavore in Stirling (Chef Connon) engaged our
students, allowing them to walk through and pick vegetables from their café
gardens, and spoke about the benefits of sustainable practices. These included
sourcing and growing ingredients locally, food miles, sharing produce with their local community, recycling bottles for local CFS and Scouts and upcycling
food produce using coffee grind for mulch. The aim of the excursion was to provide valuable primary sources
to support the students in writing two research response papers. The success
of the excursion has created a lot of conversation amongst the students and they are looking forward to putting what
they learnt to paper to show off their newfound knowledge, observations and
experiences!
Miss Lisa Feleppa,Year 12 F&H Teacher
What the students had to say…
“We had a great excursion to The Seasonal Garden, Hahndorf and the
Locavore, Stirling. Visiting both places and talking to chefs was very beneficial for our Free Foods and Sustainability
assignment. We learned a lot about how restaurants and cafés cater for many
dietary requirements, and we were also fortunate enough to taste some of their
delicious food, especially vegetables picked straight from their garden.”
- Maddy D & Anastasia“I enjoyed learning about the way
restaurant staff must know about what to do for people with different dietary requirements, and the food tasting!”
- Anthony T“We thoroughly enjoyed our excursion
to Hahndorf and Stirling. We particularly enjoyed the Seasonal Garden café,
as it was beneficial to our assignment and it was a very relaxed, yet quirky
environment. Their use of fresh produce straight from their garden demonstrated sustainability of the food and hospitality
industry at its best.”- Elise, Maree, Brianna & Emily

YEAR 12 FOOD & HOSPITALITY > Adelaide Hills Fresh Food-Fest!
“Our visit to the Seasonal Garden and The Locavore café was enjoyable as
we got the opportunity to speak with the chefs and owners. We were able to gain knowledge on how they cater for dietary requirements and how to keep their businesses sustainable. We found that the Seasonal Garden grew most
their ingredients, whereas The Locavore source their ingredients from a 100 mile
radius. Something that stood out to us with both cafés was that they both
emphasis on sustainability and keeping their produce fresh and local.”
- Tiana & Kate
“It was great to spend the day in the Adelaide Hills! We learned about sustainability and how chefs work
around people’s dietary requirements. Particularly, I learned how chefs cater to dairy free customers and how their
kitchen operations differ. Different chopping boards and ovens are used
when catering to gluten free customers. It was interesting to see at the Seasonal Garden how they grew just about all of their produce which meant their menu was very flexible.” - Sam & Anthony D

The 2017 Student Leaders sought permission to introduce a formal female pant as an alternative to the College winter skirt.
Students collaborated to identify a preferred smart style from eight different options. Following this, a size run of the style was provided
to students across a range of year levels and body shapes, and in-turn agreed as the desired new alternative. The pant style was
endorsed by the Gleeson College Board.
The Gleeson monogrammed tailored pant can be purchased from Devon Clothing at the Campus shop and at the retail store (Totally Schoolwear) at Clovercrest Shopping Centre, Modbury. The quality
of the garment ensures it is long lasting and includes comfort features of a corporate pant.
Girls have the choice to wear either the College skirt orCollege pant during Terms 2 and 3.

GLEESON COLLEGE UNIFORM> New Monogrammed Tailored Pant
In challenging weather conditions, five eager Gleeson Year 7 athletes contested
the Tea Tree Gully SAPSASA Cross Country District event held at Bulkana
Oval last Friday.
This was an exciting opportunity for these students to compete in the wind, rain and mud on the day, allowing them a true ‘cross country’ experience on the
3km course. Well done to Mercedes Bates (7 PUT), Seth Carpenter (7 PUT), Jacob Hinttala (7 PUT), Tyson Murphy
(7 BAR) and Alanah Skewes (7 BAR) who all represent the College with pride.
All students are to be congratulated on completing the grueling 3km course,
with special mention to Mercedes Bates who ran exceptionally well to finish 3rd overall in the Girls 13 Year Age Division, with a speedy time of 11mins 44.91secs.
Mercedes outstanding performance will see her contest the SAPSASA State Cross Country Championship to be held at Oakbank Race Course in Week 6 and we wish her all the best for a great race.
