Issue 15 / Friday 3 June 2016 The Globe Newsletter of Gleeson College McDonald House hosted our first-ever 'Gleeson's Biggest Cup of Tea' to help raise vital funds for cancer research and support services on Wednesday 1 June. Our aim was to put the McDonald motto into action 'Truth, Courage & Unity', and raise money to support the Cancer Council. As a College community, we were able to raise $1280 as more than 100 staff and students attended the event. A fantastic effort indeed! The event was a great success thanks to the many wonderful helpers. The participation and excitement our students brought with them set the tone as we all enjoyed a hot drink, some delicious food and each other’s company. Many thanks to Miss Mahony for her support and organisation, and especially for the catering provided by our talented Year 10 Food & Hospitality Classes taught by herself and Miss Feleppa. Thanks to all students, staff and families who supported the occasion, we hope next year to grow this McDonald House event and raise even more much-needed funds! McDONALD HOUSE HOST INAUGURAL ‘GLEESON’S BIGGEST CUP OF TEA’!

Issue 15 / Friday 3 June 2016

The Globe Newsletter of Gleeson College

McDonald House hosted our first-ever 'Gleeson's Biggest Cup

of Tea' to help raise vital funds for cancer research and support services on Wednesday 1 June.

Our aim was to put the McDonald motto into action 'Truth, Courage

& Unity', and raise money to support the Cancer Council. As a College community, we were able to raise $1280 as more than 100 staff and students attended the event. A fantastic effort indeed!

The event was a great success thanks to the many wonderful helpers. The participation and

excitement our students brought with them set the tone as we all enjoyed a hot drink, some

delicious food and each other’s company. Many thanks to Miss

Mahony for her support and organisation, and especially for the catering provided by our talented Year 10 Food &

Hospitality Classes taught by herself and Miss Feleppa. Thanks to all students, staff and families

who supported the occasion, we hope next year to grow this

McDonald House event and raise even more much-needed funds!

GREAT ATTENDANCE = GREAT RESULTS

15 Year Service Last Friday evening we recognised staff that have provided 15 years of service to Gleeson College. You might be surprised to know that there are 22 current staff, teaching and ESO, who have worked at Gleeson College for over 15 years. This is great testament to the commitment of these people to our community, and no doubt many thousands of young people have benefited from the guidance and learning experiences provided by these staff. Our new inductee this year is Assistant Principal Mrs Susan Smith. Congratulations Mrs Smith! We also recognised three staff that have completed 20 years’ service Mrs Dianne Deptula, Mr Scott Hutton and Ms Denise Spiroulias. All the staff that have completed 15 years’ service since our College began in 1989 have their name on a special Honour Board that resides in our staff room as a reminder of their service to our school community.

AttendanceStudies have proven that there is a link between poor student attendance and lower NAPLAN results. A study by the University of WA contends that a 10-

day period of unauthorised absence in a year is sufficient to drop a child a band level in achievement in NAPLAN. We can then extrapolate these findings and make a similar contention to lower Year 12 results as a result of high absentee rates also. The message is quite clear, for students to achieve well they must attend school as often as possible. Therefore, the challenge as parents is to ensure that we create the conditions and support for our children to attend school regularly. It might be an opportune time to reflect on your own child’s attendance rate and make any adjustments possible that may be preventing your children from attending school.

A ‘Child Safe’ CommunityGleeson College is committed to ensuring that all young people in our care are safe. To this end we are consistently reviewing our processes with the support of Catholic Education South Australia.

Families SA provide the following procedure regarding reporting child abuse and neglect. Anyone can report suspicions of abuse or neglect, and the Children’s Protection Act 1993 lists a range of people who are mandated notifiers, recognising the multiple contexts in which children participate and the varying roles of community members in children’s lives.

Reports can be made in the following ways: • Immediate life threatening

situations call SAPOL on emergency number: 000

• Online child protection reporting system:www.reportchildabuse.families.sa.gov.au

• Child Abuse Report Line (CARL) on 131478

There are also a number of polices that inform our work and these can be found at the links below:• Policy for the Care, Wellbeing and

Protection of Children and Young People 2011

• Cybersafety: Keeping Children Safe in a Connected World

• Keeping Safe: Child Protection Curriculum

Principal’s Information SessionOn Tuesday evening we hosted one of our regular Principal Information Sessions for prospective families. It was the best attended since I have been at Gleeson College and reflected a strong interest and demand for enrolment in our College at the moment. It is always a pleasure to speak to families who are considering an education at Gleeson College as it allows me to reflect with great pride on the things that we do so well, and speak about the amazing students we have in our community.

AriseThis weekend’s Gospel reading outlines Jesus performing the miracle of raising a widow’s son from the dead. When the Lord saw the poor widow following her son to the grave, he had compassion on her. Jesus' physical touch and personal identification with the widow's loss of her only son not only showed the depths of his love and concern for her, but pointed to his desire to free everyone from the power of sin and moral corruption, and even death itself. Jesus' simple word of command - "Young man, arise" - not only restored him to physical life, but brought freedom and wholeness to his soul as well as his body. Pope Francis calls on us to ‘arise’ to the challenges that face humanity - poverty, injustice, the environment and the family.

VISITING AUTHOR STEVEN HERRICK PERFORMS HIS WORK TO YEAR 10’S

All our Year 10 students attended a presentation by visiting

author Steven Herrick, and were entertained by his unique combination of poetry reading,

story-telling and thoughts on writing, on Thursday 26 May.

Steven Herrick is a renowned Australian poet and author who has

published 22 novels and books of poetry for adults and children. His 2006 verse novel ‘Lonesome Howl’ is a class text studied as part of the

Year 10 English curriculum here at Gleeson, so it was a wonderful

opportunity for our students to ask the author questions about this text, which he was happy to answer and

discuss.

The students and staff attending this presentation found it extremely entertaining and though-provoking.

Steven Herrick himself also commented on the high level of

engagement from our students. We look forward to hosting Steven on an annual basis, as he can provide valuable insights into the process

of writing, and the power of stories to see the world from a new

perspective.

Students can find a number of Steven’s novels in Thomas Library if they wish to discover more of

his work. Interested students and community members can find more

information on Steven Herrick through his website at:

http://www.stevenherrick.com.au/

We thank Steven again for his time and his willingness to share his work

with our students.

GALLANT EFFORT BY OUR OPEN BOYS IN ROUND 1 OF AFL KO COMPETITION

ROUND 1: Game 1Gleeson College 4-3 (27)Endeavour College 6-4 (40)The boys started the game solidly against a strong opposition and were only down by few points coming into the half time break. A slow start to the third quarter allowed the opposition to kick two majors. Despite fighting gallantly to the final siren, the boys were unable to catch up and the game was lost.

ROUND 1: Game 2Gleeson College 4-1 (25)Thomas More College 7-3 (45)After a short break, the boys were rested and ready to bounce back from their disappointing loss in game one. The siren blew and it was clear the boys were hungry for the win. Our midfield crashed into the contest and managed to win two successive clearances. Our full forward Cameron Forshaw finished off their good work with two quick goals, showing off some acrobatic skills that would put him in close contention for Rio 2016! Unfortunately, a slow start to the third quarter cost the boys again and the result fell in the oppositions favour. Overall the boys must be commended for their sportsmanship, effort and teamwork on the day.

PURSUIT OF EXCELLENCE in VOCATIONAL LEARNING: Congratulations Alex!

Congratulations to Year 12 student Alexandra Scappaticci (12 FSMAR) who has been shortlisted for the South Australian Vocational Student of the Year Award in the 2016 SA Training Awards.

Alex began her Vocational Studies in Year 10 when she was doing Personal Learning Plan (PLP). She decided to pursue a pathway in Animal Care with a view to eventually working as a Veterinarian or

Veterinary Nurse. In Year 10 she completed Certificate I in Animal Studies, Certificate II in Year 11 and this year she will complete a full Certificate III in Animal Studies. Each course attracted SACE credits and the Certificate III will be considered a subject by SATAC and SACE in the calculation of Alex's ATAR at the

end of this year. Alex is one of a growing number of Gleeson College students who will graduate with severalnationally recognised qualifications at industry level, in addition to the SACE.

We congratulate Alex on her dedication to her studies, which has seen her shortlisted for the award and we wish her success as she completes the requirements of the next stage in the judging process. Good luck Alex!

Ms Lina Russo, Flexible Learning Area Coordinator

Congratulations to Gleeson Old Scholar Jack Graham (2015) who was this week named Captain of the South Australian Under-18 team to contest the 2016 upcoming AFL National Championships.

Jack, a strong inside midfielder, plays for North Adelaide FC in the SANFL and made his League debut last season. He is also a member of the AFL Academy and has impressed program coaches with his

tenacity and his attack on the ball since returning from a quad injury in 2015.

GLEESON OLD SCHOLAR JACK GRAHAM NAMED SA UNDER 18 AFL CAPTAIN!

Well done Jack on this great honour and all the best to you and the SA boys for a successful National Championship campaign in 2016! SA take on Allies in Round 1 at AAMI Stadium this Saturday 4 June.

GLEESON FIRST XI WIN AGAINST CBC TO STAY TOP OF TWILIGHT SOCCER TABLEGleeson College took on Christian Brothers College in the third match of the Twilight Soccer League and we were determined to continue our unbeaten start to the season.

The opening half saw a scrappy affair, where openings were few and far between, however a red card to an opposition player saw them reduced to 10 men before half time and this extra man advantage would prove telling as the match wore on.

After half time the game opened up and Gleeson were able to fashion several chances at goal that either went just wide or were well saved by the CBC goalkeeper. We continued to build the pressure and were duly rewarded with the opening goal of the match thanks to the hard working Jack Ward (12 MSRYA). Ward was able to latch on to a ball in the box and finish left footed into the roof of the net. The boys did not have to wait long to double their advantage with Alex McCarron (12 DSSAL) slamming a loose ball in the box home for our second goal of the match, also sealing the points for Gleeson College.

The opening goal for Jack Ward continues his Twilight League goal-scoring streak, scoring in each of the opening three games of the season. When asked about his scoring streak Ward stated: “It’s been great winning our first few games but being able to contribute by scoring goals is even better.”

The win against CBC has the team sitting on a maximum 9 points from its opening three games and we have retained top spot heading into next rounds match against Sacred Heart College.
