KUBO needs to bring some things in his backpack to help him on his journey. Have the students create their own map using the blank map template. Have them decide what obstacles KUBO will meet and create items to help them overcome their obstacles. These can be drawn or created using materials such as pipe cleaners, small scks and strings of pearls and added to KUBO’s backpack. KUBO must start at A1 on the acvity map. Have the students lay a route for KUBO to complete the journey to the castle, overcoming each obstacle. KUBO meets the first obstacle. What must KUBO do before he moves on? Finally, have the students write down the coordinates on the map and calculate how far KUBO travels from his starng point to the castle. BEFOREHAND Students should understand how to use the KUBO Coding TagTiles ® as well as how to make routes. Students should work with direcons: ‘turn leſt’ and ‘turn right’. RESOURCES • 1 KUBO robot per pair, fully charged • 1 set of KUBO Coding TagTiles 1 blank acvity map Geng to the castle (PRIMARY FOCUS: MATH, ELA & ARTS) For students from approximately 4 to 6 years old.

S U M M A RYKUBO wants to visit an old and famous castle, but the route is far from home and is not very easy to get to. KUBO needs to bring some things in his backpack to help him on his journey. Have the students create their own map using the blank map template. Have them decide what obstacles KUBO will meet and create items to help them overcome their obstacles. Have the students lay a route for KUBO to complete the journey to the castle, overcoming each obstacle. KUBO meets the first obstacle. What must KUBO do before he moves on?

Finally, have the students write down the coordinates on the map and calculate how far KUBO travels from his starting point to the castle.

C R O S S - C U R R I C U L A R L I N K S• ELA: Have the students construct a story about travelling from one place to another. Students can sit in a

circle taking turns to talk about their experiences of travelling.

• Math: Practice coordinates. Look at the map and record what you can see at which coordinate.

• Art: Print out a blank map and have students draw their own version of the story, including the starting point at A1 and the castle placed on H5.

E X T E N S I O N A C T I V I T I E SKUBO has a diary in his backpack that he uses to write down memories from his journey. Help KUBO write a log in his diary about getting to the castle.

Calculate the time needed for KUBO to travel a specific distance.

S O L U T I O N E X A M P L EThis activity should be simple – laying routes to have KUBO execute one sequence after the other, making each sequence a part of the storytelling. Have students practice coordinates.
