Educational Outreach Program
“Messy Marvin”
A 12-minute DVD is presented, complete with a
lively sound track about cartoon-like characters
dubbed “Messy Marvin & Pollution Prevention
Penny”, who learn the errors of their ways in
contributing to water pollution.
The Passaic Valley Sewerage Commission
has developed an Educational Outreach
Program which offers free, hands on, envi-
ronmental education presentations de-
scribing aspects of The River Restoration
Program, the PVSC Treatment Plant, and
its role as guardian of our local water-
ways.
With four main presentations, each
geared to a specific age group, the PVSC’s
Educational Outreach Program include
demonstrations, games and outdoor ad-
ventures with “Messy Marvin” to show
kids how to help keep the Passaic River
Watershed healthy and clean. With stu-
dents 6th grade and older, PVSC helps put
words into actions throughout our 48-
Municipality Service area by sponsoring
participants in a streamside cleanup with
the PVSC’s River Restoration Team.
The Passaic Valley Sewerage Commission’s
Environmental Team will work with your
organization to ensure that the best possi-
ble program can be brought to students of
all ages and abilities.
Educational Games
Interactive games and activities such as “Habitat
Lap Sit” and “The Sum of the Parts” work with the
curriculum to illustrate to students that everything
and everyone is connected to the Passaic River.
River Restoration and Volunteers
A PowerPoint presentation shows students the
efforts of PVSC’s River Restoration Department in
cleaning the Passaic River, its watershed and how to
keep it clean. The second portion of this two-part
program includes going to the water’s edge and
completing a PVSC-sponsored cleanup. Kids will
walk away feeling empowered and with the confi-
dence to tell others in the community how to keep
the Passaic River and its tributaries clean.
Outdoor Activities
With the inclusion of outdoor activities from
“Nature Journaling” to a full stream study,
students learn the value of the Passaic River
and what they can do to be proactive and help
keep our watershed clean.
