TAKING ACTIONHunger. Homelessness. Social isolation. These are unignorable issues within our community. And they aren’t somebody else’s problem. They belong to all of us. Our only choice as a community is to stand up and confront these issues head-on.

For almost 2 decades, Elsie volunteered in her community. She helped coordinate celebrations and holiday gatherings, took time to visit and deliver books to indigent seniors and she made her famous punch for volunteer appreciation events. After suffering a fall, Elsie found herself in need of the very support she had been providing for so many. Meals-on-Wheels, a United Way funded program, delivers a daily nutritional meal, checks on her well-being and offers a social visit. For Elsie’s family and friends, it’s a relief to know she is cared for during her convalescence. For Elsie, it’s a road back to the community she loves.

Paul, a teen parent, thought his only option was to drop out of school and find a job to support his family. A United Way funded agency helped him to see he had other paths available. Paul chose to return to school, providing him greater employment opportunities that positively impacted his family and the community. Today, Paul is engaged in public service, volunteerism and he works for the agency that set him on that path. It’s not just about the impact a program has tomorrow, but the long-term outcome for our community.
Darcy was stuck in a revolving street life community. With mental and physical issues, his life began to unravel and he lost the one thing he took for granted – his home. Over a year ago, Darcy connected with an outreach worker and programming through a United Way funded agency. With support, he has stable housing and is using proactive tools to handle his addiction and depression. Darcy’s daily life is stronger and healthier because of his dedication and the community’s helping hand.
