    Important Heal th Warning About Playing Video Games

    Photosensitive SeizuresA very small percentage of people may experience a seizure when exposedto certain visual images, including ashing lights or patterns that may appearin video games. Even people who have no history of seizures or epilepsy mayhave an undiagnosed condition that can cause these photosensitive epilepticseizures while watching video games.

    These seizures may have a variety of symptoms, including lightheadedness,

    altered vision, eye or face twitching, jerking or shaking of arms or legs,disorientation, confusion, or momentary loss of awareness. Seizures may alsocause loss of consciousness or convulsions that can lead to injury from fallingdown or striking nearby objects.

    Immediately stop playing and consult a doctor if you experience any of thesesymptoms. Parents should watch for or ask their children about the abovesymptomschildren and teenagers are more likely than adults to experiencethese seizures. The risk of photosensitive epileptic seizures may be reducedby taking the following precautions: Sit farther from the screen; use a smallerscreen; play in a well-lit room; and do not play when you are drowsy or fatigued.

    emergenCe Day anD aterFourteen years ago, the Locust Horde gatheredunder every major cty and launched a surprseattack. Once thought ctonal boogeymen, the Hordeare rghtenngly real and stronger than anyonehad magned.

    On Emergence Day, untold masses pershed, andcountless more ded n the days that ollowed. Ratherthan allow the Horde to keep the spols o theraggresson, humans used chemcal weapons and orbtalpartcle beams to neutralze them, along wth thectes and bases they controlled.

    Wth most urban centers and mltary nstallatonsrubble, the human survvors gathered on JacntoPlateau, whose sold grante strata could not beeasly penetrated. When the Horde breached the

    plateaus deenses, Marcus Fenx deed orders tosave hs ather at East Barrcade Academy ... but hewas too late. Marcus was subsequently charged wthderelcton o duty and sentenced to 40 years nJacnto Maxmum Securty Pententary.

    Now, the Horde have overrun the pententary.

    We love shooters.

    Everyone at Epc holds the genre nearand dear. Weve been buldng thesegames or a decade. A ew years ago,we started eelng lke the genreneeded a bt o a change. We lovemakng ast-paced games lke UNREALTOURNAMENT, but we wondered we couldslow the pace down whle keepng thngsexctng. Tactcal games oten werent veryaccessble, and they crept along at a snals pace.

    To do ths, wed have to thnk derently aboutcombat. Wed requre players to take cover when theyrebeng shot at nstead o runnng headrst nto gunre.Wed have to make somethng that was compellng, acnematc rollercoaster rde wth larger-than-lecharacters, monsters, and experences. Gve the userssomethng to talk about over lunch, be t the gantcreature that chased ther squad or the onlne matchthey snglehandedly won. Pace the experence properly,and thrll the gamers accordngly.

    Wed have to thnk careully and creatvely about theplayers opposton. When olks hear about monsters,they usually assume dumb alens that run toward theprotagonsts gun. Why not make a monster that takescover, bulds weapons, and actually wants to survve?Wouldnt an ntellgent oe be more threatenng? Thswas the geness o the Locust.

    We couldnt be happer that so many gamers andrevewers agreed wth us. Over our mllon playershave been able to enjoy GEARS OF WAR on Xbox 360,and now you can take that same cnematc journey, wthgreat new gameplay and even hgher resoluton. FromMarcuss cell to the Hollow and beyond, hang onto yourseat -- ts a wld rde.

    Coalton Gears have one great melee advantage,however. The Lancer Assault Rfe has an ntegrated,carbde-tpped, varable-torque Chansaw Bayonet. Iyoure holdng ths rfe, press and hold F or B toactvate the Chansaw Bayonet and dsh out hgh-RPMdeath. Few Locust can wthstand ths brutal assault.

    NOTE: IF YOU ARE SHOT ATTEMPTING A CHAINSAW ATTACK,YOU MUST PRESS AND HOLD F OR B AGAIN TO RESTARTTHE CHAINSAW.

    I you have a grenade equpped and press F or Bto melee, you can stck the grenade onto a nearbyopponent.

    In multplayer games, press E or X near an opponentwho has been grevously wounded, but s not yet dead,to delver a savage blow (aka curb stomp).

    Host a game on your PC. You can host on yourlocal network, usng publc or prvate LIVE onlnemultplayer unctonalty, or usng LIVE lst play.Anyone can jon a publc LIVE game, but anotherplayer must be nvted to jon a prvate LIVE game.In LIVE lst play, Gold members can host games orGold and Slver members both, or Gold-only games.

    Jon a game and play wth a rend usng your localnetwork, LIVE, or LIVE lst play.

    Invte a rend. I youre a Gold member playng

    sngle-player and see a rend sgn n to LIVE, youcan select Gude and nvte your rend nto thegame. I the rend accepts, you play prvate LIVEco-op together wthout havng to restart.

    Slver members can host and jon lst play games. Inthese, you cant send rend nvtes but can search thelst o hosted games. Enter a ull or partal gamertagto nd your host (see page 24 or more on lst play).

    When you host a game, you play as Marcus Fenx.When you jon a game, you play as Domnc Santago.

    The jonng player saves unlocked chapters (notcheckponts) durng play. I the host or jonng playerquts the co-op sesson, the sesson ends. For thejonng player, game progress can contnue rom thelast chapter pont.

    When playng n co-op mode, ts mportant to rememberthat Marcus and Dom need to cover one another ncombat. In many cases, Marcus and Dom can takederent paths to get alternate angles o re.

    NOTE: NORMALLY, IF MARCUS DIES DOM CAN REVIVE HIM.

    HOWEVER, DURING CO-OP SPLITS NEITHER DOM NOR MARCUS CANBE REVIVED. EACH MUST RESTART AT THE LAST CHECKPOINT.

    multiplayer playTo play the multplayer mode o GEARS OF WAR, selectVersus rom the Man Menu and then select Local Networkor LIVE.

    ConneCtion typesThe Local Network opton lets you compete wth others(eght players maxmum) on a local area network (LAN).LIVE lets you ght alongsde and aganst other players(eght player maxmum) on LIVE.

    When playng on LIVE, you can choose rom rankedmatches, player matches, and lst play matches. Rankedmatches track your perormance and score n GEARS OFWAR. To track ranked matches, select Versus rom theMan Menu, and then select Leaderboards. Ranked matchestend to be more compettve than player matches. Playermatches do not count toward your tracked perormance

    and score, so you may want to use them to practcebeore ranked play.

    In lst play matches, LIVE Slver members can hostand play multplayer games. However, certan eaturesavalable to LIVE Gold members are not avalable toSlver members n lst play. Games are not tracked onthe leaderboards, and you cannot nvte rends to yourgames or set games as rend-only. In other words,players other than your rends can vew and jon yourpersonal lst play games. You select rom all lst playmatches nstead o beng able to search or a custom

    match, and you cannot jon a lst play matchn progress rom the rends lst.

    NOTE: YOU MUST HAVE AN ACCOUNT ON LIVE AND AHIGH-SPEED INTERNET CONNECTION TO USE THE LIVE AND LISTPLAY FEATURES.

    Ater you select a game connecton and sgn n, you host a multplayer game you can adjust many gameparameters (see page 27). I you play on LIVE, youcan search or games that use specc multplayergame parameters.

    EXECUTIONThs game type s smlar to Warzone, but nstead odyng ater you have been knocked down and bleed out,you revve. Pump or A to revve aster. Theonly way to kll an opposng team member s to delvera close-range specal kll.

    ASSASSINATION

    Each team has a leader, Colonel Homan (human) andGeneral RAAM (Locust). The goal s to kll the leader

    o the opposng team n executon ashon. Playerswho kll the leader o the opposng team becomeleader o ther team or the next round. The hghestscorng player on the losng team becomes that teamsnew leader.

    multiplayer game parametersWhen you host a multplayer game, you can:

    Set the number o rounds n a match.

    Set the duraton, n mnutes, o each round. Notethat n Annex and Kng o the Hll, you set roundscore nstead o round duraton.

    Toggle rendly re -- that s, whether re rom yourteammates can damage you.

    Reserve prvate slots n your team selecton.

    Adjust the bleed-out duraton. Ths s the numbero seconds untl a player who s knocked down des.Other players on the team may be able to revve theplayer durng ths tme (see page 4).

    Select the order and type o maps that cycle throughthe match. To do ths, press or Y, and then add

    map types and order them n your play lst.

    Globally replace weapon pckups wth other weapons nspecc maps. To do ths, press or X on the HostSettngs screen.

    NOTE: SOME PARAMETERS ARE DISABLED IN RANKED MATCHESTO ENSURE CONSISTENT RESULTS IN LEADERBOARD STATS.

    ANNEX

    Players wn by retanng control over key maplocatons (or objectves) long enough to collect awnnng number o ponts to wn the round. Every maphas two to ve dented objectves avalable orcapture, wth one objectve avalable at a tme. Round

    scores are adjustable, and the rst team to reach thetarget score wns the round.

    NOTE: UNLIKE IN OTHER GAME TYPES, PLAYERS CAN RESPAWNAN UNLIMITED NUMBER OF TIMES IN ANNEX AND KING OF THEHILL. THEY DONT HAVE TO SIT OUT A ROUND -- IF THEYDIE, THEY CAN JUMP RIGHT BACK INTO THE ACTION.

    KING OF THE HILL

    In ths all-new multplayer game created speccallyor GEARS OF WAR or Wndows, players must gancontrol o a xed capture pont on the map and retancontrol long enough to acqure more ponts than theother team. To keep gettng ponts ater a capture, atleast one player must stay nsde the capture pont todeend t.

    Executon rules are n play here, so the only way tokll an opposng team member s to move n close anddelver the kll at close range. Also, Kng o theHll has only one objectve per round. In Annex, theobjectve changes once t no longer has any pontsassocated wth t.

    multiplayer lobbyOnce you select a game type, you enter theMultplayer Lobby. You can check game type, goals,and duraton, lsted along the top o ths screen. Aplayer chooses a team by usng A and D or the letand rght arrow keys, or by clckng on the arrowcons at the bottom o the screen. Players can also

    use the let stck on the controller.

    Once sdes are selected, a player can cycle thoughderent playable characters by usng W and S or and , or by clckng on the arrow cons at thebottom o the screen. Players can also use the rghtor let trgger on the controller, or the let stck.Ater all players select characters, they each press or A to ndcate they are ready to play.

    The host presses or (START) to launch thematch. A ranked match requres a mnmum o sx

    players.

    Versus-moDe gameplayWhen players take enough damage, they all and canbleed out and de. Enemy players can nsh them wtha ew more shots, a melee blow, or a curb stomp (seepage 7). Durng ths bleed-out tme, players teammembers can also attempt to revve them.

    I you melee or perorm a curb stomp on a knocked-down opponent, you may qualy or bonus ponts,dependng on game type.

    Smoke grenades only appear n multplayer mode.Use them lke normal ragmentaton grenades. Ondetonaton, they release an obscurng cloud o smokeor tactcal uses.

    Players can chat wth each other whle on LIVE.Durng a multplayer match, the lvng can chat onlywth the lvng on ther team. The dead can chat wththe dead regardless o team.
