Garland Quilt Guild
Newsletter August 2015
Words from the President
As summer winds down I’m finding myself trying to finish some UFOs that I just didn’t
complete this summer as planned. Like you, I’m thinking of new projects to start and new
workshops to attend. My new system will be to finish a UFO then reward myself by starting a
new quilt. As my mother always says, “What are you going to do with all those quilts?” The
answer to that remains a mystery.
We lost a wonderful member during July with the passing of Julia Hirsch. Please keep Julia
and her husband Paul in your thoughts and prayers. Julia had been an active and involved
member for many years, her intelligence and creativity will be missed.
Nominations are open for our Community Service position. Please contact Vicki Isenhour,
nominating committee chairman, or me if you or you know of someone who would like this very
rewarding position. This is a great opportunity to be involved in your guild. Don’t be shy.
Things to think about: 1. Quilts to show at Garland Quilt Guild’s display at the Granville on
Nov. 2. Turn in your Support Our Sponsors receipts for the raffle at the meeting. 3. Donating
Water/food/cash for the First Presbyterian Church’s many charities. 4. Sign up for our Aug.
and/or Sept. workshops.
Thank you all for all your great ideas. It’s really an honor working with you all.
Happy Quilting,
Suzy Boyle, President
Program News
“Confessions of a Quiltaholic” lecture by Brenda Perry will entertain us at the August meeting.
We can relate to her quilting addiction, can’t we? Her workshop on August 8th, “Those
Amazing Stripes” will help us achieve the ideas you had in mind for those stripes in your stash.
You’ll never look at stripes the same way again! Take your striped fabric, whack it up using her
paper template and off you go! Our workshop is filled with quilters from other area quilt guilds,
and the Garland Quilt Guild members are missing----have you signed up yet?????
The Guild’s September 1st meeting will feature, Suzi Parron. She will show us beautiful “Barn
Quilts” throughout the United States. Her workshop on September 5th, is “Barn Quilt Painting”
and create a painted wooden 2’ X 2’ decorative piece using your favorite block. This gives me a
comfy feeling and can’t wait. No machine. The workshop provides all your supplies--- the
wood, paint and brushes. How easy is that?
In October, we will host Rose Davis. Her lecture will be “Lucy Boston: Patchwork of the
Crosses”.
Thank you for reading about our Programs and workshops—so SIGN UP and support the Guild
and your creativity! Don’t miss out on these opportunities.
Carla Byrom, Vice-President

Hospitality
Kudos to members who provided the outstanding refreshments for our July meeting.
A few people made mention (more than a few actually) that they would love to have the recipe
for some of the items that were brought in. So with that being said I would love to add a recipe
for an item to each month’s newsletter.
Two desserts come to mind this month, the Saltine Toffee Candy and the Blueberry Cobbler. I
don’t have the recipes for either. If you made either of these delicious desserts please send me
the recipe.
Remember that members who have birthdays in August are asked to bring refreshments.
Members that I have (and hope that I haven’t missed any) are:
Jamie Foster, Susan Berger, Barbara Cissne, Deanna Daugherty, Carole Harp, Ann
Harrelson, Virginia Hauer, Karen Heddins, Patty Kopeck, Dorothy Rosson, Mary
Tosetto, JoAnn Hudgins and Ann West.
Happy quilting ya’ll,
Diana Fisher & Cynthia Bennett

Sack Lunch Ministry
The demand for the church’s sack lunches has grown tremendously, with the church now giving
away about 35 lunches a week to the homeless or the hungry. The following is the list of items
for the sack lunch ministry operated by our facility location host, First Presbyterian Church. Just
pack the lunches in a small brown paper sack with non-perishable items, such as:
canned tuna or chicken salad
peanut butter and crackers
cheese and crackers
chips
fruit cup
cookies
pudding
You may also include a drink (although not necessary) as well as a napkin and spoon. Items
should not require a can opener. Bottled water is also much appreciated... You can find many of
these items at a Dollar Tree, Big Lots, Wal-Mart, etc.
The church also collects pancake mix and syrup. We also have a tip jar at the sign-in table,
and if everyone were to throw in their loose change we could donate a great deal to the church
each month. Thank you so much!
