INTRODUCTION
As open source software becomes more established as a mainstream alternative to
commercially-licensed software, and as more and more development teams are learning
the difference between working with closed-source and open source solutions, we felt that
it was important to conduct an anonymous survey to understand how enterprise IT
development teams view the options. We are making the results public to broaden the
understanding of open source software within the industry.
This survey was conducted in 2011, and includes application engineers, architects,
developers, designers, analysts and cosultants from the FuseSource community as well as
organizations that have no known connection to an open source organization. Participating
companies represent numerous industries including research, financial, government,
energy, education, retail, healthcare, technology, telecommunications, and transportation.
Major findings are as follows:
Open Source is being considered for the majority of enterprise IT projects: In
response to the question, “In what percentage of projects do you plan to employ
open source solutions by the end of 2011” more than half of the respondents (51%)
indicated that they plan to employ open source in more than 50 percent of their
projects.
Flexibility cited as top benefit in adopting open source: In response to the
question, “In what ways has the deployment of open source benefited yourIT/development organization?” – increased flexibility rated highest with 73 percent
of the responses, followed by shorter development time (58%).
Combination of costs savings and technological advantages driving deployment: In
response to the question, “If you have deployed or are planning to deploy open
source in the enterprise, what drove the decision?” – cost benefit received 89
percent of the responses, followed by flexibility (73%) and technical benefits (72%).
Backed by the leaders and founders of several key Apache Software Foundation projects,
FuseSource Corp. is the expert in open source integration and messaging. The company is
solely focused on providing enterprise-ready integration and messaging software combined
with the tools, training and expertise sought by organizations implementing and managing
integration projects such as SOA, cloud environments and others.
