Beyond frameworks Open source foundations for the enterprise
Eiki Hrafnsson, @EirikurH Co-Founder GreenQloud
● 5+ year old infrastructure software company
● CloudStack contributors since 2010
● Offices in Seattle and Iceland
● Proven track record of developing, deploying and running
highly scalable Public and Private clouds
● Makers of Qstack : the hybrid CMP for the mixed workload
needs of enterprises on any hardware
Who are we?
● Finance● Biotech● Gaming● Managed Services
Global enterprise customers in diverse industries
● Public Clouds● HPC based research● Telco● Media & Entertainment
Beyond frameworks Open source foundations for the enterprise
Or what it takes to make a cloud platform on open source frameworks that works…
Why open source infrastructure software
● Building on existing code - quicker to market
● Good hardware vendor support
● It’s free “as in speech”
● No vendor lock-in
● Good quality - OS defect rates can be 50x-150x lower than proprietary software (Forbes)

OS is everywhere in Infrastructure
VS
Simple…just pick a side?
VS
● Monolithic
● Upgradable (sort of)
● Partly pluggable
● Works
● Loosely coupled
● Upgradable?
● Very pluggable
● Works (sort of)
The End
It’s not that simple…
Then a whale came along…
And his friends…
Because applications matter too…
Container vs. VMs
Containers are isolated, but share OS and, where appropriate, bins/libraries
• “We need a private or hybrid cloud solution to stay competitive and compliant. Public clouds are disrupting IT and we can’t use them.“
• “Current private cloud software is not ‘human’ ready!”
• “We like VMWare but it seriously lacks self service capabilities.”
•“We have little or no oversight on who’s using what in our infrastructure, for what and for how long they have used it.”
• “We don’t know the true cost of our internal IT vs public cloud. Let alone per project, department or per person…”
IT infrastructure is hard
Modern IT challenges
● Infrastructure - Time, agility, transparency, show back,
monitoring, self service, upgradability…
● Cost & Security - Privacy, audit-ability, policies, charge-
back, single sign on…
● Applications - time to running, complexity, scaling,
performance, reuse, migration…
● Financial Management
● Reporting
● Leverage Current Assets
● Service Management
● Simplicity
● Operational Management
● Governance
● Standards
● User Management & Access Rights
Business objectives + the right technology = “ITBM”
● Great hypervisors ≠ private cloud
● Not deploying self service
● Not deploying automated metering and analytics
● Private to public cloud preparedness (single pane of glass hybrid)
● New workloads require new tech and industry compatible APIs
● Wrong technology - loosely coupled components lead to upgrade hell
6 Reasons why private cloud deployments fail (Gartner)
● A Hybrid infrastructure management platform that mixes
VMs, Baremetal, Containers and Object Storage
● Hypervisor agnostic KVM, VMware, Hyper-V
● A proprietary solution that uses best of breed open source
tech including CloudStack, CoreOS, OpenStack, Docker…
● For any workload in one or many zones/data centers
● A true single pane of glass in UI and API (EC2/S3)
● ITBM minded - not just for Ops and Dev
Qstack is…
• Body Level One
• Body Level Two
• Body Level Three

Virtual Private Clouds
Every major component of Qstack has roots in open source
It all started with…
Beyond frameworks…
● Current Open Source CMP are frameworks for success not products
● Too generic to fit - enterprise solutions make bets on assumptions
● Not yet designed for ITBM / to capture extensive enterprise needs
● There will be no proprietary CMPs without Open Source foundations
● But the integration of the necessary components is very hard and
out of scope for open source projects
Strengthening the compatibility of open source by testing it
against proprietary requirements.
Creditability through contribution
The backbone of open source is collaboration and contribution
