Hot/wet tapping is defined as using an under-pressure drilling machine to cut

a hole in an operating pipe, allowing a new branch connection from the

original pipe. This process is done without any product leakage or interruption

of flow. Furmanite manufactures a complete line of hot/wet tapping equipment

for tap sizes 1/2" (12.50 mm) to 72" (1800 mm) with pressure ratings to 1480 psi

and temperatures to 700°F as standard on all types of pipe. Special

applications are available on request.

Page 3: Furmanite Hot Tap and Line Stop Contractor Services Brochure

The components for a typical hot/wet tapapplication include a fitting designed tocontain system pressure, a valve used tocontrol the new connection, and a drillingmachine used to make the hot/wet tap.

The following is the basic procedure usedto perform a hot/wet tap:

1. Install fitting and valve on theexisting pipe.

2. Install hot tap machine.

3. Perform hot/wet tap through theopen valve. A special device retainsthe “coupon” removed during thehot tap operation.

4. Retract cutter assembly.

5. Close hot tapping valve.

6. Remove hot tap machine to allow forconnection to new pipe.

Line Stopping

Line stopping is a means of temporarily

stopping flow in an operating pipe. Line

stopping can be used to isolate piping

systems for repairs, alteration, or

relocations. If used in conjunction with

bypass lines, product flow can be

continued around the isolated section of

pipe to be repaired. The following pages

describe several line stopping procedures

and applications that Furmanite routinely

performs.

The folding-head line stop system, whichutilizes a reduced branch fitting, is anothercost-effective method of line stopping.Furmanite uses the folding-head line stop onwater/wastewater, transmission, oil, gas, andpetrochemical. Sizes range from 8" (200 mm)to 60" (1500 mm) with pressures to 150 psi.Larger sizes available upon request.

The following is the basic procedure usedto perform a pivoting-head line stop:

1. Install line stop fitting and performhot/wet tap application as describedon previous pages.

2. Line stop equipment is installed onthe temporary tapping valve and thevalve is opened.

3. Line stop head enters the pipethrough the hot/wet tap connection.

4. Temporary seal is achieved and pipeflow is stopped (unless bypass is inplace).

5. Repair, alteration, or relocation of thepipe is performed.

6. Line stop head is removed from thepipe through the hot/wet tap connec-tion.

7. Temporary valve is closed and theline stop equipment is removed.

8. Completion plug is installed on thetapping machine.

9. Tapping machine is installed on the temporary tapping valve.

10. Temporary tapping valve is opened, the completion plug is installed in thebranch of the line stop fitting and locked into position.

11. Line stop equipment and temporary tapping valve are removed from the linestop fitting.

12. Blind flange is installed on the line stop fitting.

Sure-Stop sealing by Furmanite is a popular and proven cylinder-wedgemethod chosen by many customers for its positive mechanical seal.Traditionally limited from 4" (100 mm) to 12" (300 mm) pipe, this method is now available for larger diameter pipe, from 14" (350 mm) to 48" (1200 mm).

The positive mechanical seal provides two distinct advantages:

• Sealing on the machined edge eliminates problems related toerosion/corrosion, internal pipe buildup, or out-of-round pipe.

• The mechanically wedged seal allows new sections of pipe to bepressure tested between stops.

HTP sealing by Furmanite is a popularand proven line stopping systemwhich provides a metal-to-metal sealat the pipe face. Standard high-tem-perature line stopping capabilitiesrange in size from 3/4" (18.75 mm) to 16"(400 mm) on temperatures to 700°Fwith pressures to 700 psi. Standardclass rating 600# and 900#.Applications include steam, hot oil,and most chemicals. The HTP stop isused most often by utilities, refineries, petrochemical, steel mills, paper mills, and other industries.

The Furmanite HTP Stop provides several advantages:

• Sealing on the machined edgeeliminates problems related toerosion/corrosion, internal pipebuildup, or out-of-round pipe.

• The mechanically locked line stop head allows downstream repairs, modifica-tions, or valve replacements tobe done safely as a “Block andBleed System.”

• Can be used on highertemperatures or pressures thanlisted above. Consult yourFurmanite representative forspecial applications.

• Special HTP fittings designedand manufactured to customerspecifications based on system parameters.

• Sealing surface is metal to metalon the upstream side, allowingfor the line stop head to be left onthe line longer than elastomerseals.
