Additional support can be provided to students who havealearningdifficultyordisability.IfyouhaveaStatementofspecialneed,alearningdifficultyassessment or an Education Health Care Plan (EHCP) please provide this to us for our guidance on your needs.

We provide access to assistive technology and software which can help with typing, reading and research.

Our specialist tutors carry out assessments for exam concessions, dyslexia and dyscalculia and recommend strategies to enable you to make independent progress in learning.

We employ specialist staff to support those with hearing or visual impairments and speech and language needs.

Students requiring additional support will often be allocatedaspecificLearningSupportAssistanttowork with them ensuring consistency throughout the College day.

Twice a week we hold a successful autistic spectrum support group where students socialise and try out new activities.

Student Life

Henry was awarded the Most Improved Student for his course for 2015. He has had support from his tutors in managing his phonological processing and specific learning difficulties. As his course is exam driven, he was introduced to assistive technology (Read & Write Gold) and revision techniques that enabled him to keep up with his coursework and revision, as well as being able to use it as an aid during exams. Henry has recently started using Dragon Naturally Speaking which allows him to dictate his notes as his poor fine motor skills affect his handwriting ability. Henry has valued the help he has received and plans to progress to Level 4 AAT Accounting.

Student Activities

The Student Union The Student Union is run by ESC students for ESC students and is a great way to ensure your voice is heard. Your elected members take your views, ideas and comments through to divisional and College council meetings, making sure that you get your say too.

Be part of the decision-making process, whether you want to be a Student Governor, Student Union President, join the Executive Committee or be part of a focus group, you can make a difference to your College experience. Being on the Student Union Executive Committee also looks great on your CV.

There’s plenty of fun stuff to organise too. Sports and social events are arranged throughout the year as well as plenty of trips and activities. Take part in anything from bowling, laser quest, paint balling, theatre trips and go-karting, to university experience days and themed weeks. We also arrange an annual trip to a theme park and have previously visited Thorpe Park, Alton Towers and Disneyland Paris.

The Student Union also arranges various fundraising events for local and international charity appeals.

We are always open to new suggestions so let us know your ideas. Freshers

The Freshers’ Fair is a great opportunity to findouthowtomakethemostofyourCollegeexperience. Taking place at the beginning of thefirstterm,studentsfromalldepartmentsget together in the Winter Garden to meet local organisationsandfindoutaboutsomefantasticdeals and discounts available to ESC students.Organisations that have visited in the past include the Harlequin Theatre, Redstone FM, Surrey FA, Virgin Health Care and the YMCA. There are lots of freebies and giveaways, live musicandinflatablefun.

EnrichmentWe offer a wide variety of activities in which you can participate outside of your academic timetable. Enrichment is about meeting new friends, developing new skills and getting the best out of your College experience.

We have a dedicated College Sport Maker who organises a wide range of sports activities to get everyone healthy and having some fun. Taking place at lunchtimes and in the early evenings, the programme is free and everyone is welcome; no matter what your experience, ability, gender or age! The programme has included Football, Basketball, Archery, Touch Rugby, Legs, Bums & Tums and many more activities.

• Become an Activity Champion - You can join the Enrichment team in creating the exciting sport and activity programme for students. It is a great opportunity to learn new skills whilst gainingfreecoachingqualificationstoaddtoyourCVorUCAS application, whilst having fun and motivating others.

• Become a Student Ambassador - This is a voluntary role where you will be tasked with attending various events such as open events, school fairs and school assemblies throughout the academic year. At these events you are there to promote the College to potential students for the next academic year and tell them about your course and student life at the College. It will also look good on your CV and UCAS applications.

• Various social and support groups meet regularly to help develop friendships, talk about support and organise group activities.

• WehaveanonlineLGBTStudentForumwhereyoucanfindmore information on local LGBT organisations and services and chat with other students.

MusicLevel 3 Sound & Music Production students set up their own record label called Neutral Ground Records in 2014. The students also designed and developed the label's website neutralgroundrecords.com.

It is a multi-genre label offering artists the opportunity to get their music heard. The label has 8 artists on its books all in developmentandtheyhavealreadyrecordedtheirfirsttracksthat can be found on the website.

If you are interested in getting involved with the label, look out for Neutral Ground at the Freshers’ Fair.

FundraisingThere are lots of opportunities to get involved in raising money for different charities throughout the year. In the past, students have had lots of fun taking part in a tug of war, golf putting competitions, bake sales, football matches and fun runs.

Charities that have received support include Comic Relief, Children in Need and Macmillan Cancer Support.

Department ActivitiesOur individual departments plan a mixture of fashion shows, art exhibitions, awards evenings and music gigs throughout the year. This is a great way to meet and mix with students from other departments.

EmploymentWe work closely with local businesses to ensure our courses are relevant and current to industry. In addition we invite businesses into the College to meet our students, view student work and communicate opportunities for employment.

• Top local employers from different industries visit the College to advertise their current job vacancies and opportunities. Students can attend workshops and seminars, gaining tips on networking and interview skills. Last year students had the chance to speak to organisations which included Santander, The Royal Air Force and Canon UK.

• ESC celebrates Apprenticeship Week with a range of specialist presentations from local businesses to help students decide if an Apprenticeship or Traineeship is right for them. Students get an opportunity to understand more about the skills employers are looking for in a number of professional sectors. QualificationlevelsarerecognisednationwideaspartoftheQualificationsandCreditFramework(QCF)andeveryonethatstudies a secondary, Further or Higher Education course will be awardedandqualifiedtoarecognisedstandard.Mostqualificationsnow fall within the QCF framework.

GCSEs Thesearethemainqualificationstakenby14to16yearolds.They are highly valued by schools, colleges and employers so will be useful whatever your future plans. Mathematics and English are particularly valued by employers and are important in enabling progression to higher levels whether academic or vocational.

Functional Skills FunctionalSkillsqualificationshelpyoutodevelopskillsinEnglish,Maths and Information & Communication Technology (ICT) in real life situations; and can be used to progress to GCSEs in these subjects or support progression to higher levels in vocational subjects.YoucantakeaFunctionalSkillsqualificationifyouareover 16 years of age, have left compulsory full-time education or donothaveanup-to-dateEnglishorMathsqualificationatLevel2on the QCF (such as a GCSE). These are often a stepping stone to GCSE.

English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) IfEnglishisn’tyourfirstlanguage,youcanapplyforacoursetohelp you improve your English. ESOL courses cover speaking, listening, reading, writing, vocabulary, punctuation and grammar. Therearecoursesatdifferentlevels,andwewillhelpyoufindtheright level for you. NVQ Diploma Ifyouarelookingtogainarecognisedqualificationrelatedtoaparticular industry or sector, an NVQ may be for you. You can study NVQs at college or work as part of an Apprenticeship.

NVQsarecompetence-basedqualifications,whichmeansthatyou learn practical, work-related tasks designed to help you develop the skills and knowledge to do a job effectively.

NVQs are based on national standards for various occupations. As you progress through the course, assessment of your skills and knowledge take place, so that you can see the areas that need to be developed to meet the standards. Taking an NVQ could be appropriate if you already have skills and want to improve them, or if you are starting from scratch. NVQs arebasedatLevels1to5ontheQualificationsandCreditFramework (QCF).

BTEC Awards, Certificates, Extended Certificates & Diplomas BTECLevel2DiplomasandExtendedCertificatesenableyouto progress onto employment or to study at the higher level of the Subsidiary Diploma, 90 Credit Diploma or Extended Diploma.

The Extended Diploma is equivalent to 3 A levels and is a preferred route for many to University. You can take one of these courses if you are interested in learning more about a particular sectororindustry.Allqualificationshavebeendesignedincollaboration with industry, to equip you with the skills and knowledge that employers are looking for.

Thequalificationsofferamixoftheoryandpracticeandwillinclude an element of work experience or a work-related project. They can take the form of (or be part of) a technical certificate,oneofthekeycomponentsofanApprenticeship.

16-19 Full-time Study Programmes

Minimum Direct Entry Criteria 2016/17

An individual Study Programme is in place for every 16-19 year old on a Full-time course at the College. The Programmes will include:

• Asubstantialacademicorvocationalqualificationthatprovidesarecognisedrouteintoatrade,professionor other form of employment, or access to a University or Higher Education course

• EnglishandMathswherethishasnotbeenachievedatGCSEgradeA*-C

• Work experience or internship that the College will plan and monitor or a work-related project, typically working from briefs set by local employers

• Group and one-to-one tutorials and other value-added activity

• A variety of enrichment activities including trips, visits and activities to enhance your CV

Whichevercourseyouhaveselectedtostudywillincludemostifnotallofthesefiveelements.

What are the benefits?Apprenticeships enable you to learn on the job, buildingupknowledgeandskills,gainingqualificationsand earning money, all at the same time. 95% of our Apprentices are kept on by their employers at the end of their placement in full-time permanent positions.

What levels are available?• IntermediateApprenticeships(equivalenttofive

good GCSE passes): Apprentices work towards theirvocationalqualifications,FunctionalSkillsandarelevanttechnicalcertificate.Theseprovideyouwith the skills you need for your chosen career and provides entry to an Advanced Apprenticeship.

• Advanced Apprenticeships (equivalent to two A level passes): Advanced Apprenticeships work towards aLevel3qualification.Tostartthisprogramme,youshouldideallyhavefiveGCSEs(gradeCorabove)including Maths and English or have completed an Intermediate Apprenticeship; and be working in a supervisory or team leader role.

Who can apply?At East Surrey College we offer Apprenticeship programmes to all age groups aged 16+, from school leavers to adults seeking a career change. You need to have a job to start an Apprenticeship and we cansupportyoutofindtherightemployerwithallourApprenticeshipvacancies advertised on our website.

Apprenticeships are not just based on academic achievement. Practical skills and a passion to work in a particular area are of equal importance. If you do not have an Apprenticeship job lined up we can still support you in becoming an Apprentice through a Traineeship.

James studied ND Music Tech and HND Music Production at ESC. He valued the industry experience of his tutors and the knowledge they brought to the classroom.

James is now a full-time freelance musician. He mainly does session work in the recording studio with other bands and artists, playing piano and keyboard as well as writing music. He also performs at corporate events, including a few gigs with Shane Ritchie!

James recently visited the College with another musician to give current students the opportunity to experience the process of recording a track with external artists. This was valuable professional experience for the students to work with external musicians.

Aimee has always had an interest in art and photography and was initially planning to study A Levels but due to personal circumstances the A Level route was not a viable option. After meeting with the photography tutor at the College, she found that the course here was more flexible and she felt supported in respect to her course work and her personal needs.

The College Marketing department were looking for a new style of visuals depicting the College buildings and provided Aimee with a brief to create images of the College in the style she had been working on as part of her photography project.

She created the final images by digitally manipulating photographs of the College buildings, and combining them together to make a series of eye-catching designs, one of which you can see as the cover image of this guide.

Aimee has a keen interest in documentary photography and plans to study Editorial Photography at university.

Michaela has been offered the Maud Tyler Scholarship to study Commercial Music Performance BMus Honours degree at Westminster University in September 2015. This is the first time a student from the College has been offered this sought after scholarship.

Michaela is one of the artists currently signed to East Surrey College’s record label, Neutral Ground. She performed to an invited audience in a live recording produced by the Music Production students and filmed by the Film & TV students. Richard first studied Level 2 Travel & Tourism at East Surrey College as a route to the Level 3 Aviation Operations course. He is described by his tutor as being hardworking and was awarded Level 3 Aviation Operations Student of the Year in his first year.

He felt the Level 3 course provided a good base for going into aviation and travel and that it provided him with experience across all aspects of the industry. As Richard enjoys customer service based roles, he completed a work experience placement in a travel agency during his course.

Richard had the opportunity to improve his GCSE Maths and English grades during his course which helped him in his successful application for a job as Cabin Crew for British Airways.

Aviation and Travel & Tourism students jetted off to New York City for a week armed with their cameras and bags of enthusiasm! The trip gave them the chance to apply what they had studied in the classroom to real world situations.

Students were able to build on their knowledge of course topics such as long haul destinations, effects of travel, customer service and transportation.

Daniel chose to study at East Surrey College as he felt the Level 3 course was more relevant to what he wanted to do as a career rather than the ‘A’ level equivalent at his previous school. Daniel is now studying Computer Science at the University of Bath. He said that a lot of what he had been taught on his Level 3 course was included in the first year of his degree. During his course, Daniel had part-time work in which he created a travel blog for one company as well as developing several websites for others. This work experience helped reinforce his decision to follow a career in the technology industry. Daniel also helped develop and maintain the website Google Plus Daily which now has over 25,000 followers. His current role on the site is Application Developer and he has created an android application called GPD Reader providing users with notifications linked to the website.

Sophie originally planned to study ‘A’ levels however chose to study the Level 3 Business course at East Surrey College as she preferred the format of the course and commented that it provided a good base for a wide range of careers.

Sophie has focused much more on her studies in her second year and at the End of Year Awards she achieved the award for “Most Improved” student.

Sophie enjoys studying at College and will be progressing to the Business Foundation Degree (FdA) at East Surrey College in September. She chose to study a degree course at the College rather than University as it will enable her to live at home and work part-time while studying, allowing her to be financially better off. Courtney has excelled in her course and was awarded Student of the Month four times as well as being Student of the Year for two consecutive years.

Courtney has always been interested in working with children as a career. Through work placements she found that she particularly enjoyed working with children with special educational needs. Following a work placement at Red Gates School, Courtney was offered a job as a Teaching Assistant to start in September 2015. The school provides education for pupils with special educational needs and disabilities.

After completing his Level 3 Carpentry course, Callum was accepted onto The Prince of Wales Building Crafts Apprentices Programme. When he completed the Apprenticeship scheme, he returned briefly to a company specialising in the refurbishment of luxury grade properties before moving to McCurdy & Co. which specialises in restoring numerous buildings of national importance, notably The Globe Theatre. Over the past few years he has been involved in projects such as Anne Boleyn’s gate at Hampton Court Palace, the repair and rebuild of the north east transept spire of Canterbury Cathedral and the creation of the new Sam Wanamaker Playhouse which Callum views as his biggest achievement to date.

At the Construction End of Year Awards for 2015, Sam was awarded the CITB Shield for being Student of the Year for Level 2 Site Carpentry. Sam was placed second in the ‘Carpentry - Senior’ category at the Regional Heats of the SkillBuild 2015 in Chichester. He had to construct a part of a roof from detailed technical drawings within a time limit of 6 hours. Sam had to work on his own and was assessed by the judges throughout the day. Feedback from the judges was that he had a highly scored second place. Sam is waiting to hear if he has qualified for the National Competition in NEC Birmingham.

The College welcomed Dom Littlewood and The One Show crew from the BBC to the College in January 2015. With the help of our Painting and Decorating students, Dom tested the latest painting application techniques to find out the most successful methods. Equipment used ranged from paint sprayer devices to different types of rollers as well as the ordinary paint brush. Each student was given a different gadget to test. It seemed that the old fashioned roller and paintbrush came out on top!

Joe was awarded Student of the Year 2015 for Level 3 Electrical/Electronic Engineering. Joe completed all units with distinction in his first year and is on track to finish with distinctions this year. As part of his second year work project, Joe designed and built a temperature controlled fan. His tutor noted that Joe’s product was a very high standard for a Level 3 student. Following tough competition and a lengthy interview process, Joe has secured a place on a Higher Apprenticeship programme with BAE Systems. His presentation to the panel was to identify and discuss the main challenges in underwater navigation and avoiding other submarines.

Craig first attended East Surrey College as part of the School Link programme for two years. He built a relationship with Caterham Cars when he had the opportunity to complete work experience with them during his Level 3 course and was then offered an Apprenticeship with Caterham Cars. Craig values the practical experience gained with an Apprenticeship alongside the theory studied in the classroom. He commented: “The equipment at East Surrey College is really good. During her Level 2 course she had the opportunity to participate in the WorldSkills competition - an experience she greatly valued and enjoyed.She worked part-time at a local salon alongside her studies in order to increase her industry experience whilst building her knowledge at College. Georgie first made contact with The Village Spa in Coulsdon at the start of her Level 3 course and was able to secure a position there as a full-time Therapist on completion of her course. Jake came to the College to join the Opt-Into Programme and subsequently moved onto Kick Start to help him back into College life after being out of education. He had lost direction but after starting Kick Start he has been able to focus on what he wants to do and has been able to developtheskillsandconfidenceheneedstoprogress onto a Full-time course in September. The Life Skills department promotes inclusion and personal development for students with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). We have a range of courses suited to all abilities which are particularly suitable for those who may not have had the opportunity to access a full range of GCSE or Functional Skills subjects in their previous schooling.

We recognise everyone has individual needs and abilities and we will work with you to meet the outcomes of your Education Health Care Plan (EHCP). We believe our students benefit from building on previous skills learnt to enable them to access the wider community which prepares them for the workplace and more independent living.

Students are placed on a course and depending on their prior attainment, often progress to a higher level over a two or three year period. Courses contain a variety of practical skills and academic subjects to ensure students are motivated to take on new challenges and ideas.

During an interview we will discuss your special needs and endeavour to meet them by providing appropriate specialist support and making reasonable adjustments where it is reasonably practical.

Josh has always been interested in a career in the Public Services and in particular the Police. Josh valued the knowledge that he gained from his tutor as he provided first hand experience of working within the Metropolitan Police.His tutor commented that Josh has grown in confidence since starting, becoming class rep and helping as an ‘assistant staff member’ on the Public Services boot camp. Josh has secured a job as a Special Constable in the Metropolitan Police following five weeks of training, interviews, assessment and exams. He will carry out another 200 hours voluntary work as well as a more intensive 12 week training programme before he starts in a full-time role.

Reuben first started at East Surrey College through the Kick Start programme as he had been out of education for a few years. He describes himself as being very shy when he first came to College but with the support of his tutors he was able to grow in confidence. Reuben’s tutor praised him for his mature focus on high achievement, adding that he was quick to interact in classroom activities and discussing topics with his peers and tutors. He is an avid football player and plays for the Chelsea FC Cerebral Palsy Football Team. He is aiming to compete for a place in the GB Paralympic Squad going to Rio in 2016. Reuben will be progressing to Level 2 Sport at East Surrey College in September and already has his sights set on Level 3.
