Editorial Policy Last year, Fujirebio compiled the fourth issue of its environment report, that should have allowed you to easily understand the environmental protection activities we have been conducting, in order to further enhance the credibility of both domestic and foreign stakeholders. This time, in a manner similar to last year, the fifth-issue has been produced as a Web-only version. Still continuing the editorial policy of the previous issues, we tried to create this fifth issue in a manner that would help our employees, people in the community, and our shareholders understand the entire picture of our on-going environmental protection activities. Particularly, we regarded, as an important issue, implementation of further measures of contributing to the prevention of global warming, which is part of our Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). In view of this, we introduced the present measures taken for CO2 emission reduction at the Hachioji Site and the contents of the “environmental discussion” at the annual environmental round-table talk. As an entire group, we are planning to promote continuous improvement for the further reduction of environmental impacts. In preparing the Environmental Report 2009, emphasis was placed on the following two points: 1. Coverage We referred to the Environmental Reporting Guidelines for 2007 by the Ministry of the Environment in order to aim for systematic information disclosure in drafting our report. 2. Easy-to-understand arrangement We paid attention to the construction of chapters, sections and layout, and also gave consideration to visual presentation by use of illustrations and photos.

3 FUJIREBIO ENVIRONMENTAL REPORT 2009

Aiming to be a company that is environmentally

conscious and contributes to society

Under our management philosophy, “contribution to worldwide healthcare through the creation of new values with full awareness and responsibility for human life and health”, Fujirebio aspires to contribute to society and medical services through our clinical diagnostic regents business. We believe that putting this philosophy into practice is the fastest way to maintain corporate social responsibility. We also included environmental consideration in the management philosophy, stating that “We will take appropriate measures for environmental conservation and try to maintain good relations with the community”. In 2001, we obtained corporate-wide ISO 14001 certification and since then, we have been working systematically toward reduction of environmental impacts such as waste reduction and energy savings. Beginning some years ago, we have put our efforts into maintaining good relations with the regional community as much as possible, including participation in environmental activities planned in the community and voluntary cleanup activities.

Nowadays, global environmental problems are some of the most urgent issues that humanity faces and consequently society also strongly requests companies to take an active approach in environmental conservation. Specifically, the issue of global warming is becoming more severe, and prevention of global warming now is an issue that should be addressed by all countries, companies and individuals as their own problem. As part of the tightening of regulations for global warming, the Law Regarding the Rationalization of Energy Use was revised, requiring each company, rather than each business site, to conduct energy management. In addition, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government revised the Environment Policy to impose on large-scale establishments the obligation of emission reduction of greenhouse gases. In this situation, we also recognize that the prevention of global warming is a critical issue in respect to the environment and have been promoting activities with reduction of energy consumption and reduction of CO2

emission set as medium-term targets. Now we feel that we are getting results. In 2009, our Hachioji Site and Ube Site also participated, as a group, in the “5th Voluntary Emissions Trading Scheme” sponsored by the Ministry of Environment, beginning to positively deal with carbon offset. We believe that this activity will play a leading role to achieve total corporate reduction allowances in the future. We will of course fulfill our Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), which we consider to be of great value, but also, in the area of environmental protection, we regard environmental activities aimed at CO2 emission reduction and medium-term equipment investment that will reduce CO2 emissions, to be important means to achieving our corporation’s management plans to help reduce CO2 emissions. In this environmental report, we would like to proactively disclose environment-conscious activities as part of our business activities that will lead to smooth communication with you. We hope you will enjoy reading our 2009 Environmental Report and we would appreciate any opinions or comments from you.

5 FUJIREBIO ENVIRONMENTAL REPORT 2009

Looking at environmental activities and contribution to the community and society

Community and social contribution activities from environment activities Aochi:At the Obihiro Site, we are continuously conducting activities to collect garbage thrown away on the road in front of the site for making the environment better around the site. Our site participates in a cleanup activity called the Eco-friends Activity sponsored by Obihiro City. Yamamoto:For TFB, we held cleanup activities at the Osaka Site. We also reviewed expansion of cleanup activities to other sites and rooftop gardening, but have not reached its implementation at the present stage because of limitations on the surrounding conditions. Yoshiki:Working on social contribution by a company is one of such methods, but at the Hachioji Site, we assigned environmental activities to individuals and began “Eco Jiman (Eco-boasting)” activity so that we can do it when we want and participate easily. To promote higher motivation, we adopted a point system just like in games. We can only gain honor through this activity, but people, who seemed uninterested in environmental activities, actively do it privately. So contrary to before, I was influenced by them. Saito:Social contribution through the prevention of global warming is becoming compulsory for companies. If such contribution at home also becomes mandatory in the future, I think the Eco Jiman activity should be worthwhile. Mikami:I think there will be more interest in environmental activities and employees can be conscious of such activities through a circle of activities such as participation in the Eco Jiman activity at the Hachioji site, cleanup activities at local sites and eco activities in cities.

Approach from reduction of environmental impacts for products Tozawa:The other day we received, from a client, an inquiry about water quality improvement on after-use for waste fluid for products. Our environmental policy also states “Creation of Environmentally-Friendly Products.” We are implementing social contribution activities beginning with the reduction of environmental impacts from products. Yoshiki:The present environmental impact assessment is limited. I think it’s necessary to consider, as a company, reduction of environmental impacts stemming from products by obtaining input information from the downstream, such as by leading feedback from users to improvement of products. Hamakado:In addition to social contribution through the supply of clinical diagnostic reagents, the risk analysis for products should be reliably evaluated for reduction of impacts in the course of their development, as approach from product assessment. I think this is what required by the society. Saito:Reduction of environmental impacts from products is a new keyword and a new point of view as well. I think this is what needs to be done in research and development and at plants. It is also a theme the company will have to deal with.

Reduction of environmental impacts from operation Yoshiki:From a research point of view, approach from not just garbage but operational and process improvement is important. By doing this, you can improve operation while reducing such impacts reasonably in jobs. I think it will lead to social contribution as a result. Aochi:Operational and process improvement should lead to environmental activities without a doubt. I think this can be understood by converting it into CO2 emission. Products we manufacture are used to produce waste fluid and garbage. If you have indexes showing how much of them you can reduce by making process improvements and design changes, I think such activities will be meaningful and you can have higher motivation. Tozawa:At the Hachioji Site, we also enjoyed a feeling of accomplishment because we confirmed the achievement of CO2 reduction in the value as a result of making process improvements for product manufacturing.

Fujirebio has been conducting environmental activities for nine years since we obtained ISO certification, and our group company TFB Inc. for fouryears. Some years ago, we began to deal with CO2 reduction with priority as social contribution and have been conducting community and social contribution activities such as cleanup activities and participation in community environmental events. Persons in charge of environment management exchanged ideas on the present situation of activities contributing to the community and society at each site and the future direction.

FUJIREBIO ENVIRONMENTAL REPORT 2009 6

Saito:At the round-table talk last year, we were told the Obihiro Site was trying to obtain indexes for process improvements by replacing the manufacturing process by a value of CO2 emission. It seems effective so I think it should be further promoted. I think this is what required by society. Hamakado:I don’t regard environmental activities and quality activities as special, but our day-to-day operations themselves are environmental activities. For example, if quality is improved through operations, quality problems as well as complaints from customers will be reduced. Then the call-out count of sales representatives and TRs (technical service representatives) will naturally decrease along with the reduction of gasoline consumption. Clerical work and power consumption in the company will also decrease and it should lead to the reduction of environmental impacts. If you believe that your daily business activities will lead to the reduction of environmental impacts and you perform adequate day-to-day operations, environmental impacts will naturally be reduced. I think this would be ideal.

“Visualization” for the enlivenment of environmental activities Saito:The age of “visualization” is here-an example is carbon footprint showing the process from product manufacture to disposal of CO2. At the Hachioji Site, the power consumption and CO2 emission in operations are delivered as data to make us aware of these facts. We are trying to establish “visualization”. By having people involved in environmental activities see their contribution results with their own eyes, I think everybody will become more conscious of such activities. Aochi:By realizing that a product is a mass of CO2, we should recognize how much CO2 was sold in the form of a product and how much CO2 was reduced despite the large number of products sold in a year. Then we should clearly specify their conversion methods in the environmental report. Expressing which activities have been done and how much CO2 was reduced in a visible manner should give an impact on us. Yamamoto:How is consciousness for enlightenment made and what are the advantages for people doing it? Hamakado:If you deal with the environment in earnest, its result will receive recognition. Then a rise in our stock price and a higher corporate value may be one of such advantages. I don’t know how much this will lead to the motivation of employees. Environmental activities included in day-to-day operations should bring results. I believe such a system is desirable.

Direction of preventing global warming in the future Mikami:Tell us the significance of participating in the “5th Japan’s Voluntary Emissions Trading Scheme.” Saito:We do it as trial implementation of the Japan’s Voluntary Emissions Trading Scheme sponsored by the Ministry of Environment. Our participation is an official practice to buy emissions credits for a lack of the CO2 emissions reduction commitment and count the excess amount of emission reductions as independent efforts. With understanding from the management, we obtained permission for equipment investment and participate in it without subsidies but still are attaining some positive results. Hamakado:CO2 emissions reductions are sought for each company in place of each site. In the future, this issue must be addressed not just at the Hachioji Site but such a system must be established in a corporate-wide manner. Mikami:Can you think of producing natural energy by our company rather than buying natural energy? Saito:We may turn our attention to producing electric power using solar energy in a place with good sunlight conditions or wind power, but we must consider its cost-benefit performance. We can still regard it as one of the feasible activities. Mikami:I think we should participate in environmental activities consistently and continuously as part of everyday operations without being conscious about community and social contribution. I feel that contributing to society through natural measures is the best direction we can take.

Environmental Efforts ◇◇◇Environmental management activities

FUJIREBIO ENVIRONMENTAL REPORT 2009 8

We have introduced an Environmental Management System in a corporate-wide manner to all sites, including the group companies

Policy and outline of EMS

Every year, “Policy and Outline of the EMS” is presented in the “Environmental Policy” to embody the environmental activities to have been particularly stressed in the fiscal year. Six EMS policy items and 17 matters to be performed for achieving the policy are presented in “Policy and Outline of the EMS for fiscal 2008.” Its contents are incorporated in the “company-wide EMS” including the group companies. EMS will be further developed according to the progress management of policy implementation during period and the output from top management in the quarterly “Environmental Management Review”.

Environmental management promotion organization This organization includes the CEO, Environmental Management Representative, Environmental Management Committee, Environmental East and West Area Conference (broadcasted to all sales branches through a TV conference), and environmental meetings held under each site manager as lower organizations, thereby promoting the infiltration and continuous improvement of EMS. The representatives of group companies also participate in the Environmental Management Committee to encourage close communication. While EMS is applied through corporate-wide environmental documents and site procedures, a feature of our environmental management system is that we pursue originality appropriate for the environmental impact of each site with the site system introduced.

● Organization of Environmental Activities Promotion

Compliance with legal regulations

The responsible person for environmental legal regulations sends legal amendment information to all the sites as “environmental regulations news” through the network using the legal regulating management tools. Each site checks and updates the registered latest legal regulating information bimonthly and evaluates the law-abiding regulation at least twice a year. Evaluation of the 122 legal law-abiding regulation items including district ordinances were verified in the review for fiscal 2008. In 2010, revision of laws and ordinances related to the prevention of global warming, such as the Law Regarding the Rationalization of Energy Use, Law Concerning the Promotion of the Measures to Cope with Global Warming, and Municipal Environment Protection Ordinance of Tokyo will be enforced. Therefore, we will further enhance the law-abiding system by implementing even closer communications between sites.

Internal audit

The “internal audit office” is organized to ensure the expertness and independence of internal auditing. The results of each audit are reported to the president every month and an internal environmental auditor meeting is held quarterly for reviewing internal audits and continuous training of auditors. The internal auditors participate in an auditor training course by the outside lecturer once every year to improve the level of their auditing skills.

Internal auditor training

Environmental discussion

In our annual environmental discussion for fiscal 2008, employees held various environmental discussions at all the sites and units with the theme of “the prevention of global warming (CO2 reduction)”. Activities for CO2 reduction are developed at all the sites as corporate-wide targets. They further discussed things that could be done inside and outside the company as activities contributing to the society. The results of discussions were summarized by organization and will be used in “Policy and outline of EMS” for the next fiscal year.

11 FUJIREBIO ENVIRONMENTAL REPORT 2009

We will eliminate the waste of resources and energy and deploy earth-conscious business activities

Reduction of CO2 emission

To reduce CO2 emissions, we began measuring our CO2 emissions in accordance with the enforcement of the Kyoto Protocol. In fiscal 2005, the total CO2 emission was 5,583 tons, a 2.2% decrease over the previous year. In fiscal 2006, however, it increased by 24.6% from the previous year as a result of the operation of the new Ube Plant. In fiscal 2007, we set the CO2 emission reduction compared with fiscal 2006 as the corporate-wide medium-term target to enhance CO2 reduction activities at all the sites. Particularly, at the Hachioji Site, we conducted reducing activities mainly through the deliberate introduction of energy-saving equipment and equipment operation management leading to energy saving. As a result, the corporate-wide CO2 emission decreased by 3.3% from fiscal 2006 (a 2.0% reduction from the previous year). In fiscal 2010, we will further introduce energy-saving equipment corresponding to the Law Regarding the Rationalization of Energy Use and Municipal Environment Protection Ordinance of Tokyo.

Comparison of CO2 emissions by emission source 90% of CO2 emissions originated from light and heat energy, most of which consisted of electricity, city gas and liquid natural gas. We achieved a 2.0% decrease over the previous year due to reduction of the electricity consumption, city gas and heating oil and controlling an increase in liquefied petroleum gas by the introduction of energy-saving equipment and equipment operation management leading to energy saving.

●FY 2008 Comparison of CO2 emissions by emission source

The Hachioji Site produces the highest CO2 emission in the company and was notified and officially announced as a “Type 2 Specific Factory” in the Law Regarding the Rationalization of Energy Use and as a “Large-scale Establishment” in the Municipal Environment Protection Ordinance of Tokyo. This site is dealing with the reduction of greenhouse effect gas emissions. Last year, the Hachioji Site applied to the 4th public issue for the “Japan’s Voluntary Emissions Trading Scheme (JVETS)” and was formally accepted through preliminary review by the third-party review organization. This scheme issues emission quotas to companies, which will voluntarily and positively make emission reduction efforts, in exchange of a certain amount of emission reduction commitment. It is intended to cost-effectively and reliably reduce CO2 emissions and build up knowledge and experience of the Emissions Trading Scheme. At present, we are introducing equipment leading to CO2 emission reduction and monitoring the operation management based on the committed annual plan. In fiscal 2009, we are applying for the 5th scheme at the Ube Site with the second highest CO2 emission in the company. Extensively participating in the “Japan’s Voluntary Emissions Trading Scheme,” we will enhance dealing with CO2 emission reduction more than ever and contribute to the low-carbon society.

FUJIREBIO ENVIRONMENTAL REPORT 2009 12

Reduction of electricity consumption

We began working on the reduction of electricity consumption in fiscal 2001. Our strict control of each specific reduction item resulted in significant reduction in two years by fiscal 2002. After that, however, the total consumption has increased as the production increased. In fiscal 2006, it considerably increased by 17.2% from the previous year as a result of the operation of the new Ube Plant. In fiscal 2007, we set the electricity consumption reduction compared with fiscal 2006 as a corporate-wide medium-term target. We developed reducing activities mainly through the introduction of energy-saving equipment at the Hachioji Site which has the largest electricity consumption and achieved a 2.9% decrease compared with fiscal 2006 in fiscal 2008. In fiscal 2010, we will introduce further energy-saving equipment since the “Law Regarding the Rationalization of Energy Use” and “Ordinance on Environment to Ensure Health and Safety for Citizens in Tokyo” will be revised and enforced.

Reduction of gasoline consumption

At the time of acquisition of ISO 14001 certification in fiscal 2001, we decided to introduce hybrid cars as commercial vehicles while aiming at “Eco-car Introduction”. Replacements have been carried out every year, exchanging most of the commercial vehicles to hybrid cars by fiscal 2008. In fiscal 2006, we began to provide MRs (medical representatives) and TRs (technical service representatives) with thorough education on eco-driving. At the same time, we have promoted the use of public transportation in available areas. These enabled us to extensively reduce the gasoline consumption by 16.4% in five years from fiscal 2003 through fiscal 2007. In fiscal 2008, however, there was a rise in gasoline consumption due to an increase in MR and TR work which necessitated in farther travel distances. We are going to continue implementing thorough education in eco-driving and promote the use of public transportation in order to continuously promote reduction activities.

The Automobile Environmental Management Plan Scheme is the scheme specified in the “Ordinance on Environment to Ensure Health and Safety for Citizens in Tokyo”. It requires companies using at least 30 cars in Tokyo to submit a plan and annual performance report for automobile environment management. The purpose of this scheme is to reduce the burden on the environment resulting from use of cars (measures to reduce CO2 emissions). Fujirebio exchanged all of our commercial vehicles to eco-cars as a relevant company for this scheme and also as a mean to reduce CO2 emissions for a corporate-wide target setting item. We continue to conduct environmental activities such as education and enlightenment of eco-driving at all the sites. At this time, our positive environmental activities were recognized and our company name was made public on the website of Tokyo as an example of a company promoting rationalization of car use.

Reduction of OA paper consumption

We succeeded in reducing the previous OA paper consumption by half in two years after starting activities in 2000 such as double-sided use of copy paper, electronic documentation of environment-related documents, and thorough use of non-printed matter. However, consumption increased in the subsequent three years due to response to the revision of the Pharmaceutical Affairs Law and an increase in sales promotion materials. Corporate-wide reduction activities were developed in fiscal 2006 and the corporate-wide medium-term reduction target was set to enhance the reduction since fiscal 2007. As this result, the all-site OA paper consumption considerably decreased by 7.3% from the previous year. In fiscal 2009, we set a corporate-wide medium-term reduction target (a 3% reduction compared with fiscal 2006), and will work on stricter reduction control at the Head Office Site of which paper consumption is high.

Reduction of Generation of Wastes and Proper Waste Disposal As a result of the promotion of corporate-wide stricter separation and recycling since fiscal 2005, the total combustible wastes have decreased from year to year. Particularly, we succeeded in the 100% recycling of combustible wastes at the Hachioji Site in fiscal 2007, achieving zero generation of combustible wastes. We also promoted recycling at other sites and the total combustible wastes in fiscal 2008 were reduced to 5.2 tons, an 18.8% decrease compared with the previous year. As a result of the promotion of corporate-wide stricter separation and recycling since fiscal 2005, the total noncombustible wastes have also decreased year after year. For contributing factors, this reduction was greatly attributable to the recycling of the sludge after treatment of experimental animal excreta at the Obihiro Site and the recycling of the melting furnace including test equipment, components, etc. at the Sales Site. In fiscal 2008, the total wastes were reduced to 17.8 tons, a 15.8% decrease over the previous year. In fiscal 2009, we aim at even more recycling to achieve the medium-term target or a 9% reduction compared with fiscal 2006. At the final “Trials Toward Zero Emission” stage, we will expand full recycling of test equipment, components, etc. by contract melting furnace processing facilities to all sales site.

At the Hachioji Site, we recommend the participation of each employee as a way to spread environmental consciousness. While making efforts at the company is of course necessary, there are differences in the consciousness levels between individuals so compulsory activities along with a regular workload may be overwhelming for some. Employees should search within themselves to see what action should be taken and put it into practice. With that in mind, we launched the Eco Jiman (Eco boasting) Activity. We introduced various pro-environmental behaviors in daily life as examples and aimed to make even those less environmentally conscious employees take part. To make it more enjoyable, we made everyone grade each other’s activity and give points accordingly as in a game. One employee would talk about some of the activities he or she is working on and if someone thinks that they can do that activity as well, then they will receive some points. This is to aim for raising environmentally conscious behavior at the workplace. At first this was a voluntary activity but now, as a rule, everyone must participate. The coordinating office and the volunteers review the rules for giving points. Some say that giving prizes or awards will vitalize the activities, but for now, receiving honor will do.

★ Point criteria for Eco Jiman ★ Degree of contribution 1: Washing clothes using remaining bath water, voluntary restraint on use of your car,

“Green Fund-raising”, etc. Degree of contribution 5: Use of EcoCute (natural refrigerant heat pump water heater), buying local farm products, use of

energy-efficient household appliances, etc. Degree of contribution 10: Participation in voluntary activities such as NPO, in-house power generation with solar panels, etc.

Environmental Efforts ◇◇◇Global warming prevention activities by the Hachioji Site

15 FUJIREBIO ENVIRONMENTAL REPORT 2009

The Hachioji Site promotes energy saving to comply with regulations for using energy.

CO2 emission situation at the Hachioji Site

In Japan, the Ministry of the Environment, Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, and local governments are taking various measures for control related to CO2 emission reduction. The Hachioji Site has the highest energy consumption among the national sites of Fujirebio. The site corresponds to a type 2 designated energy management factory (1,500 kl or more as crude oil equivalent) according to the Law Regarding the Rationalization of Energy Use and Law Concerning the Promotion of the Measures to Cope with Global Warming. The Hachioji Site gathered energy data for 17 years from the construction of Building A (research building) in 1992 to 2008.

The electrical energy has been broadly flat for 17 years. (See Fig. 1) The data with fossil fuels such as gas and oil in addition to electricity (see Fig. 2) shows that the energy has been clearly on a declining trend for the last few years. This may be due to the effect of the business scheme but we believe that the repair works for energy saving such as renewal of ceiling lighting apparatuses (see Photo 1) and renewal of air-conditioning systems (see Photo 2) has yielded results.

CO2 emissions reduction policy

for all the sites Meanwhile, the Ube Site with the second highest energy consumption among all the sites has accumulated energy data (see Fig. 3) for three years since the construction of the No. 2 Factory Building in 2006. The data indicates that the CO2 emission has also been on the increase in proportion to the production volume for three years from fiscal 2006 to 2008.

To comply with the revised Law Regarding the Rationalization of Energy Use put in force in April this year, it is necessary to annually reduce more than one percent of CO2 reduction from the CO2 emission found from the total of energy consumptions of all the sites. To achieve the above target, we expect to conduct the following corporate-wide activities according to the plan.

1.Grasping of the current situation of CO2 emissions of all the sites 2.Setting of the standard emission (baseline) 3.Setting of the reduction target 4.Drawing up of a CO2 reduction plan and preparing a budget 5.Preparation for emissions trading

The second year of the first commitment period of the Kyoto Protocol falls in 2009. Therefore, it is expected that domestic activities will be even more active to comply with mandatory curbs on CO2 emissions regardless of economic trends. Different than before, each company will deal with CO2 reduction under the director in charge of environment issues. Fujirebio will also positively conduct CO2 emission reduction activities from a corporate social responsibility perspective.

FUJIREBIO ENVIRONMENTAL REPORT 2009 16

Promoting original environmental activities to meet respective business activities

Distinctive environmental activities

Each site determines a theme before conducting environmental activities. Some of them are introduced below.

■ Acting with “consistent activities” as our slogan (Obihiro Site) The Obihiro Site marked its 36th anniversary after its establishment in 1973. The product development section was discontinued in 2008. In 2009, an organizational change was made in the site. Now, 16 persons (including partner and non-regular staff) work on environmental activities. We refrain from doing what can’t be done and act with “consistent activities” as our slogan. Particularly for the waste reduction activity among the corporate-wide targets, the Obihiro Site finally succeeded in increasing the recycle rate to 92.9% and raising awareness of recycling has begun to yield results. For environmental plus activities, we continue our cleanup activity in public areas mainly around the site, Eco-friends Activity (a cleanup activity in Obihiro City) in which we have participated since three years ago. We have also continued the tree-planting activity on the site since last year. A row of cherry blossom trees have been planted from the main building to the animal barn, but it may take several years before they are in full bloom. How will these trees increase the absorption rate of CO2? We will continue to work on the reduction of environmental impacts. (Toshiyuki Kanda, Person in Charge of Environmental Management) ■ Participating in concurrent cleanup in Osaka City “Clean Osaka” (Osaka Branch Site) In 2008, we also participated in the concurrent cleanup activity “Clean Osaka” for the entire area of Osaka City to make a clean and beautiful town that’s free of litter. The Osaka Branch Site was also posted on the website of Osaka City as a company participating in “Clean Osaka.” This activity is an annually established custom for us and we will of course participate in it in 2009. “We love litter-free clean town, Osaka!” (Naoko Sasakabe, Person in Charge of Environmental Management)

■ Improving fuel efficiency through eco-driving (Kitakanto Branch Site) The control area by the Kitakanto Branch Site includes five prefectures of Saitama, Gunma, Niigata, Ibaraki, and Tochigi. We mainly use cars during operating activities and therefore, we always pay attention to the reduction of gasoline consumption and improving fuel efficiency (= CO2 reduction) through eco-driving. We try to drive cars without loading unnecessary burdens, not to mention checking the air pressure and idling stop practice. Even in our personal lives, we share environmental information for activities to implement eco-life.

(Yoshiyuki Akaishi, Site Manager) ■Continuing “consistent activities” (Ube Site) In addition to active participation in the neighborhood community association and school environment maintenance activity, which we are continuing as one of our social contributions in a wider area, the Ube Site began “My Eco Activity” being even more conscious of the “environment” also in our daily lives, regardless of whether we are at the company or not. We start by doing small things such as using my chopsticks, my towel and my bag at the company. Almost all the employees commute by car and consequently, we have become more interested in replacing by eco-cars and eco-driving. We also request suppliers to stop idling during delivery. From individual attention to community-wide recognition that spreads around the world, we will continue our activities in an effort to keep this environmental loop from breaking. Promoting better relations with the society and fulfill our social responsibilities as a corporation

Building good relations with the community:

Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) entrusts the National Institute of Infectious Diseases to offer international training on care of HIV-infected patients and diagnosis for test engineers and their supervisors from countries in the west Pacific region, Southeast Asia and Africa. In July 2009, 8 trainees visited our company using one day of the training period of about one month. Explanation of our products, demonstration of our rapid test kits, and observing the test system were carried out at our central institute. They particularly saw the test system with considerable interest by asking question after question, partly because the system had also been installed at the Japanese Red Cross. We also export our products to developing countries through international organizations such as WHO and UNICEF, thus contributing to healthcare in the world.

2008 Summer Festival held again this year

The “Summer Festival” jointly planned by SRL, Inc. and Fujirebio was held at the Fujirebio Hachioji Site on July 18, 2008 (Friday). Friendly relations with the community have become a custom at this event and the local children’s association and the neighborhood association eagerly awaits this festival. As new residential areas increase, we visited the Hino Shinmachi Neighborhood Association in addition to Komiya-cho and Ishikawa-cho, to announce this festival. Although the weather was unstable on the day, the rain and wind stopped right before the start of the festival and as we saw in 2008, approximately 3,000 people came to enjoy the festivities Guests included the health section of Hino City municipal office, local elementary and junior high school PTA board members and local police officers. Some of the guests gold us that “We feel safe with such tight security”. Starting this year, we switched to using natural energy (green electricity) to run the festival, letting people know that as a corporation, we are considerate of CO2 emission reduction.

FUJIREBIO ENVIRONMENTAL REPORT 2009 18

Our environmental report will be the fifth issue this year, beginning in fiscal 2005.

This time, as expressed clearly in the editorial policy, only the Web version has been issued. Still

continuing the editorial policy to the preceding issues, we tried to help all of you to understand the

entire picture of our continuous environmental activities.

While the problem of global warming is becoming more serious throughout the world, the time has

come when emphasis needs to be placed on corporate social responsibility toward the prevention

of global warming. In our company, we also discuss what we can do now and what we can

contribute to in the future in order to reduce CO2 emissions. In the environmental report, we have

also introduced some of our activities for the prevention of global warming, which have just started,

in addition to activities for reducing paper, rubbish and electricity consumption.

With our broad goal of global environmental protection, we always intend to carry out your affairs

that are important to you, such as reducing waste and cost in our day-to-day business activities,

and we will continue to conduct such activities and try even harder to contribute to the protection of

the earth’s environment.

Finally, please read through the “Fujirebio Inc. Environmental Report 2009” to get a better

awareness of our activities and to give us your honest opinion after reading the report.
