Winter, 2012

The installation of our self check-in machine began in

February and the system was operational in June. The

Largest part is housed in the staff work

area, unseen by the public. This new

way of returning materials is intend-

ed to eliminate manual handling

of materials as each item goes

through multiple steps to get

back on the shelf or to the

next person in the holds queue.

For patrons, although it takes a

bit longer to return an armful

of books, you are actually speed-

ing up the time it takes for materials

to be re-circulated. Plus, you can get a

receipt if you like and you are helping to prevent

repetitive motion injury among the staff! For

those times when you are in a hurry or

there is no power, the building still has

a book drop.

We Are Proud Sponsors of Programs at the Library - All Free to the Public!

Donate Your Gently Used Books

We depend on the generosity of the community to stock our ongoing sale and the annual sale in

September. We take used books any time of the year so feel free to donate the next time you

want to reduce the number of books in your home. If you have a large amount, please ring the

doorbell by the staff entrance for delivery. We also take DVDs!

For adults, the Friends sponsored the opera previews by

Norm Hollingshead and for teens, the SAT preparation

course. These and other programs are made possible

through membership dues and the money made at our

ongoing and annual book sales.

As we have in recent years, the Friends participated in

the 2011 Back to School program for Shoreline School

District students. We provided 1,200 packets with book-

marks detailing hours of operations for all three KCLS

branches in the district, along with an incentive in the

packet to visit the Shoreline Library. We are grateful to

KCLS for providing printed materials and the library staff

for accommodating the young visitors.

As members of the community,

the Friends have a tradition of

participating in the Celebrate

Shoreline Festival. Please look for

our booth in 2012 and come and

say hello!

Nancy Stewart was a popular per-

former in 2011. She returns to the

Shoreline Library on March 13,

2012 for “E-I-E-I-OINK!” It’s a farm

sing-along featuring lots of ani-

mals , machinery, and things that

grow on farms.

For high-energy kids, the Friends

will sponsor, “Preschool Dance

Party” on February 17. Everyone

will enjoy dancing to tunes from Story Times!

For kids between the ages of 8 and 12, the Clay Ani-

mation Network will return on February 24 to give two

workshops on animation using Legos. (Registration will

open on February 10.)

Opera previews begin on February 16, with Gluck’s

Orphee et Euridice. At the preview, you’ll learn about

this operatic retelling of the Orpheus myth.

For all programs, please look for notices at our library

and online at <www.kcls.org>.

Tax Help

Beginning February 2, you’ll be able to find tax help once again at our li-

brary. This free service is provided by AARP/IRS and electronic filing will be

available. For 2012, the sessions will be on Thursdays at 4:30 pm and Satur-

days at noon. As in the past, it’s first come, first served. Sessions are sched-

uled through April 14.

KIDSREAD!

We are sponsoring KIDSREAD! in

2012. Starting February 7 and

running through May, Tuesdays

will be for kids ages 5 to 12 who

would like help with reading. Kids

will be able to practice reading

with local teens who have been trained by librari-

ans. This program is supported by Shoreline Kiwanis

and Shorecrest High School Key Club.

We gratefully acknowledge our members. Combined with the money we make on our annual and ongoing

Book Club—Join Us!

Our monthly discussions are open to all! We meet on the second Monday of each month from 7

pm til about 8:30 pm. Don’t be shy—just drop in and try out the group! We alternate between

fiction and nonfiction and it’s okay to drop in for just one book. All of our reading selections have

multiple copies in the KCLS catalog so purchase of a book is not necessary. (Although it may be

difficult to get a copy shortly before the scheduled date so give yourself plenty of time to place a

hold.) Attendees get the opportunity to suggest future titles.

February 13 River of Doubt: Theodore Roosevelt's Darkest Journey by Candice Millard March 12 The Help by Kathryn Stockett

April 9 Cleopatra: A Life by Stacy Schiff

May 14 The Submission by Amy Waldman

June 11 The Social Animal: The Hidden Sources of Love, Character and Achievement by David Brooks

July 9 An Object of Beauty by Steve Martin
