As we begin the year there are several subjects that we have been reviewing this week with students. Below are some of the topics:

Seminar: Students have been assigned seminar teachers by grade level. Seminar takes place during the last block on B days. The purpose of seminar is to develop study skills, to do independent study, research, make-up work, enrichment acti viti es, and academic reading. Seminar gives students the opportunity to work more closely with teachers and peer-tutors on subjects where students are experiencing diffi culty, as well as to explore aspects of coursework they would not normally cover in class. Students use a pass system to obtain a pass to see teachers during Seminar 1 or Seminar 2.

NMHS Dress Standards: Naples Middle High School students are expected to dress and be groomed in support of the educati onal program and orderly operati on of the school. The following standards are designed to promote health, safety, contribute to the teaching and learning climate, and to promote a positi ve image in the community.

Dress Standard Guidelines• Clothing items may not be see-

through or laced. • Leggings/jeggings/spandex-type

items without shorts, tunics, a dress, or a skirt are prohibited. Tight fi tti ng garments are not to be worn. Fingerti p rule applies.

• Cleavage and midriff s may not show.• Strapless tops and spaghetti straps

are not acceptable at Naples Middle High School.

Tops• Students may wear long or short-sleeved

shirts, jackets, sweaters, and sweatshirts. Vests may be worn over shirts.

• Shirts must extend below the natural waistline or be tucked in.

• Undershirts, ribbed undershirts (for males and females) may be worn only as undergarments and may not show below outer tops. Undergarments may not be visible.

Bott oms• All must be secured at the natural

waistline, belts are to be worn, no sagging. Jeans with holes/slits are not allowed.

• Shorts, skirts, skorts must meet the fi ngerti p test or measure not more than 3 inches from the knee (including the slit).

• All must be plain or pleated style (cargo pants and jeans accepted if they meet other requirements).

• Pajama pants or other sleepwear may not be worn.

• Sweats suits, training-type, Presen-tati on suits and athleti c style shorts are not permitt ed.

Shoes• Students are expected to wear shoes

with supporti ve soles and sides and closed toes for lab classes.

• Shoes manufactured with buckles, Velcro clasps or shoestrings will be buckled, att ached, clasped or ti ed securely on both feet at all ti mes. Sandals/slides may be worn.

• Bedroom slippers are not permitt ed.

Att endance: Students are expected to att end school every day and be on ti me: absences and late arrivals (tardies) have an adverse impact on school performance. In the event of late arrival or absence, parents/sponsors are expected to inform the school on the day of the absence. Parents/sponsors are expected to sign the student in/out in the Main Offi ce for appointments during school hours. For security and accountability, we do not allow students to leave school for any reason without parent/sponsor sign out and escort.

Excused Absences: Parents/sponsors should inform the school offi ce by phone or email when their student is going to be absent by 10:00 the morning of the absence. Students, immediately upon their return, are expected to see the att endance clerk to verify their absence. Students are authorized one school day per class day of absence to complete make-up work. The responsibility for obtaining and completi ng make-up work rests solely with the student.

Parti cipati on in School Events on Day of Absence: Students absent from school will not be allowed to att end or parti cipate in any extracurricular acti vity sponsored by the school during that same day.

Communicati on: Please make sure that your contact informati on is up to date so that we can reach you if needed. Every Friday you will receive the weekly newslett er, Wildcat News, containing important dates and events and other informati on. In additi on to the Wildcat News, Mr. Werner will communicate with parents via his nhs Update.

We look forward to working with you as we combine eff orts to foster academic success, character development and extracurricular involvement with your son or daughter as they prepare for college and/or careers!

Military & Family Life Counselors (MFLC)

To better address the needs of active duty and recently separated military families and students, Naples Middle High School will have three Military and Family Life Counselors (MFLCs) to provide school-based services: Darleena Cozzo, Marie Hamilton and Jeff Wheatley.

MFLCs provide short-term, non-medical problem solving counseling and support to assist children and youth, parents, family members and school staff. With the exception of duty to warn, these services are strictly confidential and are not affiliated with any one branch of military service.

Parents should have completed a consent form for the student to opt in or out of MFLC services during registration. Additional consent forms are available in the registrar's office, and can be returned to the school office.
