Friday, 15 February 2019 Dear Parents, Students, Staff and Friends I encourage you to make a difference to your children’s reading journey. Your role as an advocate for your children’s reading success cannot be overestimated. It has a direct impact on the ease and confidence with which they pursue their reading and writing. It is the joy and love of sharing a good book on a nightly basis that sets the foundation for their reading success, and ensures that reading is given the priority it deserves. Reading regularly with someone who cares is the inspiration that all readers deserve. As parents and carers, you create the home context for reading and set the tone for how reading is valued. Fear, anxiety, stress and humiliation have no place in the reading experience. The ‘payoff’ for reading together has to be worth coming back to night after night after night. When reading together is the best time of your children’s day and the best time of your day, it is worth turning up. The right book infused with fun, laughter, and love goes a long way in creating life-long readers who in thirty years’ time recall with joy being snuggled on the lounge with you and their favourite book. For our part at school we will do our part. Teachers and leaders will continue to listen to the children read here. We will be having a focus on flow. Interestingly, we know that although some children might not know a sound or a word here and there, they can actually read. The best way to learn to read is by reading. Children need to take risks with unfamiliar words to progress. They do not need undue pressure from the adults in their lives. Good luck! This morning at School Assembly we enjoyed the learning undertaken this year by Year 3 Mrs Angilletta and Year 4 Mr Pearce/Mrs Adams. School Assemblies are such a feature of learning here at Holy Family. Parents and other family members and friends and neighbours are always welcome. It has been nice to welcome children from the ELC and their teachers and families.

Dear Parents, Students, Staff and Friends

I encourage you to make a difference to your children’s reading journey.

It was clear from their presentation that the children have melded together beautifully in their “Mobs”. These are friendship groups formed around a shared interest and their shared experiences arising from these interests. For example, the “Australian Stars” all enjoy puppies and their families. The children have worked together formulating the things for which they should be grateful in their lives. In particular they are grateful for their families.

One of the many positives in my role here is to watch the success of our students as they progress into subsequent levels of schooling.

The latest achievement in this narrative is the appointment of Blake Thomas as School Captain for 2019 at St Paul’s College.

Blake is a credit to himself, his family and to Holy Family

On Thursday, February 14th, we celebrated Saint Valentine’s feast day. I think what is important to note that this day is not just about flowers, chocolates and cards but who this day is named after and why he became a Saint.

Valentine was a holy priest in Rome, who, with his family, assisted the Christians imprisoned under Claudius 11. He was apprehended, and sent by the emperor to the prefect of Rome, who tried to make him renounce his faith. When he refused he sentenced him to death. The charges were for marrying couples and aiding persecuted Christians. Saint Valentine was executed on February 14, about the year 270. Pope Julius I is said to have built a church near Ponte Mole to his memory.

A famous story about Saint Valentine was when he was on house arrest with Judge Asterius. While discussing religion and faith with the Judge, Valentine pledged the validity of Jesus. The judge immediately put Valentine and his faith to the test.

St. Valentine was presented with the judge's blind daughter and told to restore her sight. If he succeeded, the judge vowed to do anything for Valentine. Placing his hands onto her eyes, Valentine restored the child's vision.

Judge Asterius was humbled and obeyed Valentine's requests. Asterius broke all the idols around his house, fasted for three days and became baptised, along with his family and entire 44-member household. The now faithful judge then freed all of his Christian inmates.

Saint Valentine is the Patron Saint of affianced couples, beekeepers, engaged couples, epilepsy, fainting, greetings, happy marriages, love, lovers, plague, travellers and young people. He is represented in pictures with birds and roses. from Catholic online

SALISBURY PLENARY GATHERING Sunday 17 February 2019: 2pm-5pm

Family Centre, Salisbury Parish

Dear Friends,

This weekend we gather as a parish to formulate a response to “What do you think God is asking of us in Australia at this time?” I feel it is a tremendous task, I do not know how you are feeling about it. I am in awe; as we come together to pray, to dialogue, to listen and be transformed. What excites me more is the fact that we are going to be together. I was reminded of a wonderful story as to how God works in our lives.

Wishing to encourage her young son’s progress on the piano, a mother took her boy to a Paderewski concert. -Ignacy J. Paderewski (1860-1941) was a polish composer, politician, statesman and spokesman for polish independence, who was known for his concerts- After they were seated, the mother spotted a friend in the audience and walked down the aisle to greet her. Seizing the opportunity to explore the wonders of the concert hall, the little boy rose and eventually explored his way through a door marked “NO ADMITTANCE.” When the house lights dimmed and the concert was about to begin, the mother returned to her seat and discovered that the child was missing. Suddenly, the curtains parted and spotlights focused on the impressive Steinway on stage. In horror, the mother saw her little boy sitting at the keyboard, innocently picking out “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star.” At that moment, the great piano master made his entrance, quickly moved to the piano, and whispered in the boy’s ear, “Don’t quit. Keep playing.” Then leaning over, Paderewski reached down with his left hand and began filling in a bass part. Soon his right arm reached around to the other side of the child and he added a running obbligato. Together, the old master and the young novice transformed a frightening situation into a wonderfully creative experience. The audience was mesmerized. That’s the way it is with God (Source:http://www.truthorfiction.com/rumors/p/paderewski.htm Whether the story itself is true or not, the point made by the story is nonetheless readily apparent.)

What we can accomplish on our own is hardly noteworthy. We try our best, but the results aren’t exactly graceful flowing music. Do not be afraid to explore the unknown, like the little boy. But with the hand of the Master, our life’s work truly can be beautiful. When you walk into the Family Centre for the Plenary gathering, we need not have all the right answers and solutions. But as you walk in, listen carefully and share your stories. You can hear the voice of the Master, whispering in your ear, “Don’t quit. Keep playing.” Feel His loving arms around you. Know that His strong hands are there helping you turn your feeble attempts into true masterpieces. “Remember, God doesn’t call the equipped, He equips the called “. And He’ll always be there to love and guide you on to great things. All are welcome to this gathering and every opinion is significant, as every note to the symphony. We allow God to put his arms around us and keep playing, the master will create the great orchestra and that is the reason why we gather today. Wishing you all a great time of reflection and transformation as one church; the Body of Christ.

Warmly inviting each of you to the Family Centre this Sunday afternoon, Fr. Shibu Jacob Msfs
