IntroductionFRICTION MATERIALS STANDARDS INSTITUTE

ELECTRONIC CATALOG

The purpose of this document is to provide a user’s guide and to define the various fields found within the FMSI electronic catalog. It assumes that the reader is familiar with the products covered by FMSI and is capable of logging into the FMSI electronic catalog.

HomePage:

After logging on the home page will appear. This page provides basic system information such as the date of the last update and the current system version. The user has the opportunity to assist FMSI by providing OE sets that FMSI knows exist but has not yet identified. With each update the list of OE numbers that need identification is also updated.



Clicking on the blue obtains the list.

The list is self explanatory. At the bottom of the home page is the opportunity to view the FMSI Mission Statement.

This opens the mission statement in the web site.



MyAccount:

This is in the upper right corner of the home page. The user may edit the information in his / her account.

If you make a change, you must click on “Save User”. If you change from one unit of measurement to another – e.g. English to metric ‐, you must exit the system and then log back in for the change to take affect. Several important things.

1. Name and company: FMSI wants to be able to track the users. Please keep the name and the company correct. As employees change, please inform FMSI so that access may be granted or denied as appropriate.

2. Email: Enables the users to receive a list of bulletins and drawings the day after they are entered into the system.

3. Password: The user may change his / her password. 4. Measurement: The user may work in either English or metric. It is recommended

that you work in one or the other. Mixing them will yield very strange results. The examples shown below are for a user who has chosen English. If metric is chosen the system will convert the dimensions to metric.

5. Send notice: If this box is checked, the user will receive notification of new bulletins and drawings. If the box is unchecked, no notification will be sent.



SystemCommonality:Significant commonality exists within the FMSI electronic catalog. Several examples:

1. Whenever information appears in blue, by clicking on that field the user will go directly to that piece of information in the appropriate workgroup.

2. Reports may be created and / or accessed either from the appropriate workgroup or from the reports section. In this document reports will be dealt with in the reports section.

3. The initial search boxes are very similar between the workgroups. 4. After a search if only one line is found, that line will be expanded and the first tab

(typically the details) will be shown. If more than one line is found, the user should select the line to expand. Lines may be expanded and contracted as desired.

5. The tabs are very similar between workgroups and provide similar information. Each tab will indicate the number found.

6. Partial strings may be searched on as long as the Exact Match box is not checked. 7. In almost all instances the user may print the information shown, extract it to an

Excel file, or create a PDF. This document will not repeat these common items for each area.



WorkgroupsBrakeApplications:

User may enter either make – model – year or year – make – model. Either way only the appropriate information will be allowed – i.e. only models for the chosen make and only years that the chosen make/model existed. The bottom area is the reports that have been created by this user for the brake applications workgroup. New reports may be created. Existing reports may be run, edited, or deleted from this area. (This will be the same for each workgroup.) The user entered make (Ford Truck) – model (F‐150) – year (2012).



The fields are: Make: FMSI make name Model: FMSI primary model name Year: Model year Sub model: FMSI sub model – in this case sub model is not used because all sub models use the same brakes. Aces Make: Make name from the Aces table. Historically, FMSI has Ford Truck, Chevrolet Truck, etc., while Aces has Ford, Chevrolet, etc. Aces BV Number: Aces base vehicle number Aces Primary Model: Primary model name from the Aces table. While FMSI has attempted to follow the Aces primary model name, there are some exceptions due to length restrictions and the need for no two model names to be the same. Front – Rear ‐ Parking: Friction – Steel ‐ OE number – Revision for all three positions. Qualifier: Whatever is known to distinguish this line from other lines with the same information. It is not always known what the distinction is. Last updated: Date this line was last updated or created. Word OR: This word is used whenever the Make – Primary Model – Sub Model – Year are the same. Note #1: This information can be exported to excel, printed as a PDF, or simply printed by clicking on the blue items in the upper right corner. Note #2: Any of the assemblies in blue may be clicked on and the Brake Assembly Workgroup will be entered for that assembly. Note #3: FMSI has not attempted to follow the Aces submodel names. The submodel field is used to distinguish within a make – model – year whenever it is possible to distinguish between the brakes used.



BrakeAssemblies: Friction, steel, or OE number may be selected as the criteria. The user may also do a partial string or require an exact match. If OE number is chosen, the user may paste an OE number in from another source and the system will eliminate the dashes, periods, spaces, etc.

The user selected friction 8840. The system found five occurrences with three different steels and five different OE numbers. The user then expanded the fourth one by clicking on the left box with the cross in it. That box then became a box with a horizontal line in it.



The fields in the Assembly Detail tab are: FMSI #: Friction – Steel Friction: This number is in blue and by clicking on it the user will enter the disc friction workgroup. Steel: This number is also in blue and by clicking on it the user will enter the disc steel workgroup. OE #: The OE number is in FMSI format – no spaces, dashes, periods, etc. Original OE Assignment: A “Y” indicates that for this friction and steel assembly that this OE number was the original assignment OE number. A blank indicates that this assembly was after the original assignment. Rev: Revisions have two letter codes. A blank indicates this assembly does not have a revision assigned to it. Revisions will be covered later in this section. Edge Code: The edge code that was visible on this assembly. Slotted: “Y” indicates that this assembly was slotted. Blank indicates no slot. Chamfered: “Y” indicates that this assembly was chamfered. Blank indicates no chamfer.



Last Date: The date that this line was last updated. Origin Date: The date this line was created. Once created this date does not change. OE # Format: The more typical OE number formatted to interact with other information providers. Inner Clip: Some inner clips – typically piston clips ‐ have a number stamped on that clip for identification purposes. That number would appear here. Outer Clip: Some outers clips – typically hold down or piston clips – have a number stamped on that clip for identification purposes. That number would appear here. Comments: These comments pertain to this assembly and indicate specific information about this assembly. These comments may be up to four lines long. Loose: If the set contains loose hardware, that hardware is indicated in these two lines of comments. These are in addition to the four comment lines. Supersession: If this supersedes another part or is superseded by another part, that information will be indicated here if known. There are six tabs across the top: Assembly Details, Illustrations, Applications, Revision Illustrations, Part Bulletins / Drawings, and for disc assemblies Abutment Clips. Illustrations:



There are two types of illustrations – line drawings with dimensions and photographs with the OE number imbedded in the photo. Both may be accessed by clicking on the blue file name. The user may also create a zip file with all the illustrations in it. Applications:

These are the applications for this brake assembly – friction – steel – OE number – revision.



RevisionIllustrations: This will be dealt with later. PartBulletins/Drawings:

Each may be accessed by clicking on the blue file name or getting all in a zip file. AbutmentClips: User switched to 9022‐D1793.



Generic abutment clip drawings have been developed for disc assemblies where the abutment clips are included in the OE set. Depending upon the clip, five or six dimensions are detailed along with the quantity of clips included. Abutment clips are tied to the friction – steel – OE number. Cross Reference: User switch to 7153‐D242.

The user then chose Cross Reference.

This indicates that there are two non OE cross references for this FMSI number. The two are 20870 and 21294. Both are WVA numbers. The origin and last date are both shown. The purpose of the name is to allow for expansion if other standards are developed that could cross reference to FMSI. Regardless of which line of 7153‐D242 that the user selected, the same cross references would be shown.



BrakeAssembly‐Revisions RevisionsandRevisionIllustrations: User went to 8445‐D1047 and selected the line with the FA revision. If this assembly has a revision, the revision designator is indicated in the Rev field.

The revision is described at the bottom of the assembly details. The assignment assembly cannot have a revision. Non‐assignment assemblies may only have one revision. The same revision may apply to any number of non‐assignment assemblies that have the same friction and steel. Revisions have their own illustrations in addition to the original assignment illustrations. They also have their own Part Bulletins/Drawings. The fields in the Revision portion of the Assembly Detail tab are: Rev Number: Two letter code for this revision. Rev Code: Two digit code. Prime: The primary reason for this Revision. The Rev Code and the Prime go together. The following table indicates the Rev Codes and Primes in use.

BrakeCrossReference:

Cross Reference, friction, or steel may be selected as the criteria. This may be a partial string or exact match if that box is checked.

User entered 20870. The system displayed two FMSI numbers that are crossed to this reference.

The user expanded the first line. On both the header lines and in the detail there is the capability to indicate an FMSI revision as well as the FMSI number. By clicking on the blue fields the user may go to the assembly, the friction, or the steel.



DiscSteel:

User entered D1047.



DiscSteelDetails:Steel number: Disc plate “D” number Sortable plate number: Zeroes have been added between the D and the number to sort properly. This field will consistently have 6 characters – D plus 5 numeric. This field eliminates the problem of D1000 sorting before D2. If you sort on this field D2 will sort prior to D1000. Comments: A single line of information. Plate 1 Designation: If blank, the plate is common. Otherwise, the word Inner appears. Plate 2 Designation is either Outer or blank. Dimensions: There are six dimensions for the inner and six more for the outer if the outer exists. The six plate dimensions are: thickness, overall length, notch length, middle height, notch height, and total height. The following drawings attempt to define those dimensions for four different plate types.





FieldDefinitions(Continued):Last updated: Date this line was last updated. Origin date: Date line was created. Comments: The comments are those that will appear in the book. Typically these comments are not as detailed as the comments in the Brake Assembly workgroup. There are four tabs across the top in addition to steel details: Illustrations, Applications, Assemblies, and Part Bulletins / Drawings.

These are similar to the line drawings used in the book.



Applications:These are all the applications for this disc plate regardless of friction or assembly.

Assemblies:These are all the assemblies – friction / steel / OE number / Revision – that use this disc steel plate. The original assignments are indicated.



PartBulletins/Drawings:



DiscFriction:

User entered 8445.



DiscFrictionDetails: The fields are similar to those for the disc steel workgroup. Friction number: In this case 8445 Sortable friction number: Zeroes have been added as a prefix to sort properly. This field will consistently have five numbers with at least one leading zero until 10000 is reached. This field eliminates the problem of 1000 sorting before 700. If you sort on this field 700 will sort prior to 1000. Comments: A single line of information. Friction 1 Designation: If blank, the friction is common. Otherwise, the word Inner appears. Friction 2 Designation is either Outer or blank. Dimensions: There are four dimensions for the inner and four more for the outer if the outer exists. The four friction dimensions are: middle height, thickness, overall length, and total height. The following drawings attempt to define those dimensions for four different plate types. If the assembly is integrally molded, the friction thickness is the plate plus the friction. If the assembly is riveted, the friction thickness is only the friction. In no case is the thickness of the shim included. The following drawings attempt to define those dimensions for two different friction types.



FieldDefinitions(Continued):Friction 1 and Friction 2 Number Pieces Per Set: This is the quantity of each (common, inner or outer) that make up the set. Attachment: Method of attachment – typically either integrally molded or riveted. A few older sets are bonded or mixed integrally molded and riveted. Number of rivets: If riveted, the total number of rivets per set. Rivet size: If riveted, the size of the rivet. Brake location: Front, rear, or parking.

These are the applications for this friction regardless of steel and OE number. Assemblies:




DrumSteel:

User enter S716.

DrumSteelDetails: The fields are similar to those for the disc steel workgroup except for obvious differences.



Shoe number: In this case S716. Shoes prior to S612 did not have the S prefix. Sortable shoe number: Zeroes have been added between the S and the number to sort properly and make this a consistent six character field. Also all shoes have an S prefix. Therefore, shoe 1 has a sortable part number of S00001. As with the other sortable fields, this eliminates problems with sorting. Shoe 2 will sort before Shoe S1000. Comments: A single line of information. Drum diameter: This is a single dimension that includes the lining. For the most part FMSI does not know the actual diameter of the drum. This dimension is the outside diameter of the assembly. The actual drum diameter is probably slightly larger. Shoe 1 Designation: If blank, the shoe is common. Otherwise, “F” is “Forward” and “P” is “Primary”. Shoe 2 Designation is either blank or either “R” is “Reverse” or “S” is “Secondary”. Dimensions: There are five dimensions for shoe 1 and five more for shoe 2 if shoe 2 exists. The five shoe dimensions are: table thickness, web thickness, table width, throat width, and outside radius of the shoe. The following drawing attempts to define those dimensions on a typical shoe. Drum diameter is also shown.

DrumFriction/Blocks:These two products share the same workgroup since they have similar characteristics and can be defined using the same criteria. Blocks are typically thicker than drum friction.

Comments: A single line of information. Drum diameter: This is a single dimension that includes the lining. For the most part FMSI does not know the actual diameter of the drum. This dimension is the outside diameter of the assembly. The actual drum diameter is probably slightly larger. Friction 1 Designation: If blank, the friction is common. Otherwise, the friction is either Primary or Anchor. Friction 2 Designation is either blank or either Secondary or Cam. Dimensions: There are three dimensions for the friction 1 and three more for the friction 2 if friction 2 exists. The three friction dimensions are: width, thickness at the thickest point, and outside arc length of the friction. The following drawing attempts to define those dimensions. Unlike disc friction the thickness is always the friction thickness regardless of the attachment method. Drum diameter is also shown.



FieldDefinitions(Continued):Friction 1 and Friction 2 Pieces Per Set: Number of pieces of each in the set. Attachment: B = bonded, R = riveted, I = integrally molded, M = Mixed riveted and bonded. Type: Type of brake system. A = S Cam Air, BH = Servo, BT = Twin Plex, CH = Cam Hydraulic, F = Non‐Servo F Type, FR = Non‐Servo FR Type, G = Girling, L = Non‐Servo, N = Non‐Servo, TF = Twin Forward Hydraulic, WT = Wedge Type Number of Rivets Per Set: If riveted, total number of rivets per set. Rivet Size: If riveted, rivet size. Brake Location: FR = Front, RR = Rear, PB = Parking Parking Brake Location: If it is a parking brake, the location of that brake. Assemblies:

Twoothertabsexist:RivetDetails and PartBulletins/Drawings. In this case neither has any content. The part is bonded and therefore does not have rivet details. This part is too old to have a part bulletin in electronic format. Typically bonded drum friction does not have a detailed drawing. The illustrations show the friction location on the shoe when known. The dimensions provide the necessary information. Block: The same field definitions and tabs exist for block as for drum friction. These will not be repeated but only shown using 4515A as the block example. BlockDetails: The system distinguishes between drum friction and block based upon the assembly including a drum shoe or not. Drum frictions have drum shoes assigned. Blocks do not have drum shoes assigned to them.



Illustrations: There are none in this case.



Applications: There are a great many for this part.

Assemblies: Since this in the system is a block, there is no shoe. There is no OE number in this particular instance.

In the designation A is for Anchor and C is for Cam. For the example will chose 4515E Anchor.



RivetDetails:

FieldDefinitions:Friction Number: Parent’s friction number Designation: Blank = Common, Anchor, Cam, Primary, Secondary Tapered: If the piece is tapered, the word “Taper” appears. Otherwise it is blank. Thick End or Thick if not Tapered: For tapered piece this is the thickness at the thick end or in the middle if that is the thickest point. For a non tapered piece this is the thickness in the middle. Thin End if Tapered: For a tapered piece this is the thickness at the thin end. For a non tapered piece this field is blank. Length – Long Arc: This is the length of the outside arc. Length – Short Arc: This is the length of the inside arc.



X, Y, & Z Dimensions: Hole to hole dimensions across the piece and these refer to the dimensions on the illustration with those letters. A, B, C, D, E, F, G, & H Dimensions: These are hole to hole dimensions along the inside arc and these refer to the dimensions on the illustration with those letters. Quantity Per Set: Number of pieces of this designation in the set. Rivet Type: R = Rivet, B = Bolt Rivet or Bolt Size: Size of the rivet or bolt. Counter Bore Angle: This is the angle of the counter bore. 0 degrees is a flat counter bore. Thru hole Diameter: This is the diameter of the thru hole – the smaller hole for the rivet / bolt neck. Counter Bore Hole Diameter: This is the larger diameter hole for the rivet / bolt head. Number of Spring Holes Per Piece: Some pieces have spring holes. Some of those have more than one spring hole per piece. Last updated: Date this line was last updated. There are three other tabs.

These are similar to the generic drawings that appear in Section 6 of the Library Edition books. ParentFriction:




ClutchApplications: These are very similar to brake applications. There may be up to two clutch facings per application.

The fields have the same meaning as they do in brake applications.



ClutchFacing:

User entered 10029.



FacingDetails:Clutch number: 10029 Sortable clutch number: A zero was added prior to the number to sort properly and to make this a consistent six number field. If this is a segmented facing, it has an S prefix and then five numbers including the leading zero(es). Comments: A single line of information. OE Number: In this case it is unknown. Number of Holes: Number of holes in the single facing.



11 Dimensions: These are depicted on the following drawing. The grooves were eliminated for clarity.

FacingDetails(Continued):Rivet size: Size of the rivet. Drill pattern: Standardized drill patterns that are used in the Automotive Data Books. Number of grooves: This is the number of grooves in the facing. Last updated: Date this line was last changed. Origin date: Date this line was created.



There are four tabs. Illustrations: Shows the clutch facing without dimensions.

Applications:There are three for this facing.



Manufacturers: There are none for this facing. If there were manufacturers, that would be a list of the companies that manufactured this facing. PartBulletins/Drawings:



BulletinsGeneralBulletins: These are the bulletins that summarize the FMSI new part and application activity typically for a two month period. While they are not a complete record of database activity, they do indicate the parts and most of the applications that have been added. The same basic screens are used as in the workgroup section.

There are two means of selecting a bulletin or bulletins. You may type in the Contains section something like “1‐141”. Contain will search all three fields (bulletin, release date, and comments) to find that string of characters / numbers / special characters. You may also put in start and end release dates. The date format is: MM/DD/YYYY. In this case no criteria was entered and the Search button was clicked. All bulletins are listed.



To see the rest of the general bulletins, the user selects the page from the numbers at the bottom of the screen. The user clicked “Bltn # 1‐141 6/19/14” and the PDF opened:



The user has all the standard options available with a PDF file.



PartBulletins: This is very similar to General Bulletins.

The “Contains” search will search all three fields. The dates are the release dates. The user typed “d1802” in the contains field.

All part bulletins start with “Bul”. Then six identifiers follow to classify this part bulletin:

1. Bl – Block 2. Cf – clutch facing 3. DiFr – disc friction 4. DiSt – disc steel 5. DrFr – drum friction 6. DrSh – drum shoe.

The user clicked on the blue “Bul DiFr 9034‐D1802 Outer”:





PartDrawings:

The user typed D1802 into the contains field.

All part drawings start with the word “Draw”. The same six identifiers are used in Part Drawings as were used in Part Bulletins. Then the user clicked on “Draw DiSt D1802 Inner”:





ReportsCustomReports: Reports are extremely powerful and relatively simple to use. This section will explain the basic steps that are used to create a report. This will be a simple report for the front brakes on all Ford Truck F‐150’s from 2005 to 2014. Reports may be accessed from Custom Reports and from each Workgroup for any report that uses that Workgroup.

Click on the “Create New” push button. ReportDetail:

You must give the report a name and select a workgroup. The report description is optional. The suppress duplicates checkbox is also optional. This box will eliminate all lines that are exactly identical. To have this box function properly it is imperative that the report is sorted so that identical lines would be together and can be reduced to one line. Click on the “Create Report” push button.



FieldSelection:

Now select those fields that you desire in your report. Simply check the boxes that you want. In addition to those shown Front Friction, Front Steel, Front OE #, Front Revision, Aces Base Vehicle Number, and Qualifier were checked. Now clip on the “Add Selected” push button. This moves the selected fields from the left to the center.



You may change the sequence of the selected fields by clicking on the check box and then on the “Move Up” or “Move Down” push buttons. You may also remove fields by checking them and clicking on “Remove Selected”. This returns those fields to the list of not selected fields. Once the year field has been selected the “Enable Compression” check box appears. By checking this and sorting the fields appropriately, year compression can be achieved. Filters:Next step is to set the filters. If no filters are set you would have a report that is the entire brake application workgroup – well in excess of 40,000 lines. This report is only for a specific make model in a specific year range.

The “Add New” after the word “Filtering” is clicked on to add each new filter including the first one. The first filter is for the Make. “Contains” is a looser filter than “Is”. The second filter is for the Model. The third is to set the year between 2005 and 2014. The fourth filter is to eliminate any lines where the front brake is blank. Boolean logic is used to set the filters. The “And”s may be changed to “Or”s. Once more than two filters are added, parentheses are introduced. The parentheses may be set as appropriate as long as they are balanced. In this case each filter line stands alone. The “And” between each filter and the parentheses are correct.



Sort: Now to set a sort.

Click on the “Add New” after the “Sorting”. In this case a simple sort by year is set. Besides saving and running the report, you can also create a copy. This is particularly helpful for modifying a report for other uses. Maybe the next report will be for Chevrolet Truck Silverado 1500. FinalReport:

Here is the report. You can send this to Excel, create a PDF, or simply print it.



ToolsWorkspaceSearch:

This provides a means of searching the general bulletins, part bulletins, and part drawings for matching text in the bulletin and comments fields. The user typed in “rev”: A large number of instances were found. For both part bulletins and part drawings the user has multiple page documents.





UnidentifiedOEList: The user may access this list from the Tools section. It is the same as was shown in the introduction.
