Freshers’ week!

Freshers’ Week

Timetable

2015

*Events marked with a £ indicate where you will need some cash, there isn’t an ATM at Fitz so it may be useful

to plan ahead and get enough out for the week before you arrive! Of course there are plenty of ATMs in town,

but often you’ll be so busy having fun you’ll forget to leave enough time to head down the hill to withdraw

money!

WELCOME!

Welcome to Fitz! This is your official timetable for Freshers’ Week (3rdth-12th of October) and includes JCR social events in addition to those put on by College. In general, you can take your pick of what to do, but events that College

say you absolutely must attend are *starred and underlined*. Updates will be put on the newsfeed of

http://www.fitzjcr.com as well as on our ‘Fitz Ents’ Facebook page, so make sure to like it! The JCR Twitter (@FitzJCR) and Facebook feeds will also have this information, so keep your eyes peeled for those.

We recommend that Saturday is the best day for you to arrive if you want time to settle in before starting off on this masterpiece of a timetable, but please try to get in before we stop selling gowns (4pm on Sunday) or your gownless self could stand out at the Matriculation Dinner on Monday. If for some reason you can’t get here in time, please email any member of the JCR and we will try our best to help you out.

Your Ents team, fabulously pictured below, will be strongly present at the Fitz Societies Fair, as well as other events during the week, selling Freshers’ Packs. These will include a t-shirt necessary for the legendary pub crawl, tickets for a variety of club nights (there’s no paying with cash on the door during Freshers’ Week) and a ticket for what will undoubtedly be the highlight of your week – ‘Fitz Up Look Sharp’. You’ll also have the opportunity to sign up for bowling and a trip to Funky Funhouse (curious? Find more details below).

Fenella Tom Max Millie

With all that being said, the most important thing is to have a great time and hopefully this guide will help you do just that. There’s plenty to do, whether you drink or not, so get involved! You only get one Freshers’ Week, so don’t worry about remembering names and don’t worry about lectures – you’ve got plenty of time for that. Just go ahead and enjoy yourself!

Love,

Fitz Ents

Saturday 3rd October

9:30pm - 12am

3pm - 4pm

4pm - 5pm

5pm - 5:20pm

6pm - 7pm

8pm - 9:15pm

10:30am - Late

Meet and Greet – North and South Porters’ Lodges When you arrive at Fitz it’s best for you to be dropped off at the Porters’ Lodge on Storey’s Way (the South Plodge) and get your family to drive round with your belongings and park on the Huntingdon Road side (the North Plodge) as that’s much closer to your accommodation which will make it a lot easier to unpack.

Once you arrive at the South Plodge on the 3rd, one of the JCR Committee members will take you to pick up your keys and student card as well as sign your room contract (hold on to that!). You’ll then be shown to your room where you can unpack.

Tea with your corridor reps – Your Corridor Corridor reps are 2ndyears who have volunteered to help you settle in on the first day. They’re there to answer any questions you might have as well as help to get you set up on the College Wi-Fi, Hermes webmail and Raven (your Cambridge login). It’s really important to do this as key emails, such as your bill, will be sent in the first week of you being here. Remember your corridor reps as they can be a good way to get to know people in the year above as well as providing friendly faces around college.

Meet your block A Block = Wilson Court Common Room B Block = Societies Room C Block = JCR E Block = TV Room F Block = Buttery P Block = Upper Hall 1

You’ve met your corridor and now your corridor reps will take you to the above places to give you a chance to socialise with your block. Be warned, there’ll be the ice-breakers you thought you left behind in school, so embrace them.

*Meet your JCR – Reddaway Room*

In what will almost certainly be another highlight of your week, you’ll have the chance to meet us and get any remaining questions you have answered.

After our fabulous welcome talk you will have the chance to sign up for Freshers’ week ‘assassin’ – the rules will be explained on the day but it’s guaranteed to provide you with a novel way of learning everyone’s name! You will also have the opportunity to sign up for other optional events that will be taking place over the week such as bowling on Sunday night if pubs and clubs aren’t your thing, a block dinner at the end of the week, Funky Funhouse, welfare yoga and massages!

Dinner – Buttery

Reward your hard work unpacking with some dinner, which will be held at this time throughout full term. Whilst you’re at it, why not arrange to meet your college parents if you haven’t already done so? They’ll give you the benefit of their year’s worth of wisdom and make sure you know what’s what.

‘Speed Friend-ing’ – Buttery

You’ve met your corridor. You’ve met your staircase. Now it’s time to meet your year. Overseen by two glamorous speakers to make sure that there are no awkward moments, get ready to meet a lot of people. Fast.

Bop – Bar *Fancy Dress

Bops usually happen after Superhalls (fancy dress formals held twice a term) and are parties held for the whole college in the bar. The theme for your first bop is WHEN I GROW UP I WANT TO BE... So whatever you wanted to be, from an astronaut to a fairy, bring your most outrageous outfits from home and get creative with the cardboard, paint and everything horrendous in your dressing up box. Bops are all about having a laugh, so ridiculous costumes, cheesy music, and a sweaty bar are absolutely guaranteed.

This brunch will also be a fantastic opportunity to talk to any of the welfare team or other JCR members, we’ll be wearing our hoodies so please don’t be shy - come and chat to us!

Gown Sale – Upper Hall 1 £* One of the most Harry Potter-esque things about studying at Cambridge is that you will own a gown. You’ll need one for Tuesday’s Matriculation Dinner as well as for all formals, so don't forget to come along and buy one. New gowns will be £45 and second hand gowns £25. The number of second hand gowns is very limited so if you are looking to get one please arrive early.

Gowns can be paid for using cash only.

Fitz Societies Fair – Upper Hall 2

All societies and sports teams will try and get you to sign up to their club at this event. Come and find out what’s for you and meet new people along the way. Check out the JCR handbook for an idea of what’s on offer.

N.B. You’ll need your CRSid to sign up to any societies. That’s the letters and digits before the ‘@’ in your Cambridge email address. For example, if your email is [email protected], your CRSidis Jw462.

Murray Edwards’ Freshers’ Garden Party – Murray Edwards Their May Week Garden Party sold out in 20 minutes and your Ents team have managed to worm you an invite to their Freshers’ event. Expect very good things.

Sunday Service – Fitz Chapel Chaplain Helen Arnold will be holding the first Sunday service of the year, so come along for a fantastic opportunity to meet one of the most important welfare staff at Fitz. There will be an informal service where people can come and sing hymns and get to know the chapel, followed by cakes and drinks in the Crypt.

Bar Crawl (Includes Pub and Pool) – Meet in Bar £ A favourite for Freshers and non-Freshers alike, whether you drink or not, this will be your first taste of Cambridge nightlife! Make sure you’ve grabbed a t-shirt and ticket from the Ents team; you’ll need them to take part. Find the event on the ‘Fitz Ents’ FB page for more details.

Ten-pin bowling – Meet in North Plodge £ If pubs and clubs aren’t your scene don’t fret, come along to the North Plodge at 7pm. Sign up for bowling will take place after the meet the JCR event on Saturday.

Welfare tea and toast – JCR As you’re dragging yourself home from the pub crawl, be sure to grab some tea and toast with Isla and Jake for a chance to sober up and meet your welfare team. Whether you’re feeling a little worse for wear or simply missing home, our lovely welfare officers will be on hand to lend an ear and hand you a much-needed cuppa.

*DoS/ Tutor Introductions – Various Locations*

Your Director of Studies and Tutor will be in touch about confirming a time and location.

*Official Welcome Talks ft. Cycle Registration – Auditorium* An official welcome by the College along with heaps of important information to go with it.

*Study Skills Workshops and Library Induction*

The workshops are a chance for you to work in groups and receive general study advice from a fellow. There should also be an opportunity for you to ask him/her any questions you may have. The library induction is run by the College Librarian Christine Lewis who is probably the nicest librarian in Cambridge! She’ll introduce you to all the learning resources the College has to offer.

*DoS/ Tutor Introductions – Various Locations* More of these for those who haven’t yet had their appointment.

*Cycle Safety Seminar 1 – Gordon Cameron Lecture Theatre*

You’ll learn soon enough that the majority of the student population cycle everywhere! We’re offering 4 seminars (you only need to go to one) that will give you the perfect opportunity to brush up on your bike-riding know how - you’ll be tackling the one-way system, crossroads, roundabouts and tourists in no time! Due to the large number of people on the cycle paths in Cambridge, there is inevitably the occasional bike related accident so knowing how to cycle safely is really important.

Undergrad/Postgrad Museum Tour – North Plodge A fantastic opportunity to bond with the graduate portion of college, head over to the North Plodge at 3pm to join a museum tour organised by the MCR (they’re the same as the JCR but for graduates), guaranteed to provide insight into just some of the cultural activities Cambridge has to offer.

*Fitzwilliam: A Brief History – Auditorium* You study at the best Cambridge College, so it’s only right you know its history. Prepare to get your Billy-pride flowing.

N.B. Remember to leave enough time to get ready beforehand and put your gown on for the first time as you’ll be heading off to your Matriculation Dinner shortly afterwards! You’ll obviously need to save some time to stop on the way before the talk to take photos of each other in your full glory.

*Pre Dinner Drinks with your Tutor– Upper Hall* A great way to get to know your Tutor, your academic peers and their choice of drink. College will get in touch to confirm places and times.

*Matriculation Dinner – Hall * *Formal wear and gowns Matriculate is Cambridge talk for “sign a document promising to be good and thereby join the University officially”. You’ll do this tomorrow morning. To celebrate, there are several exceptionally good dinners you get throughout your time at Fitz: this is your first and it is a really special event. A JCR-run photobooth will be available so make sure you come to the JCR after dinner to get some pictures to look back on in years to come!

Fitz Sessions – Bar Fitz sessions is the name for our informal open mic night, put on at least once a term - this is a firm favourite for all years. So definitely stop by the bar after dinner to check out some home grown talent and have a few drinks!

From 10:45am

11:45am

1:30pm

9pm – 1:30am

*DoS/ Tutor Introductions – Various Locations* Yet more of these for those who haven’t yet had their appointment.

*Matriculation – Auditorium* *Formal wear and gowns The moment you officially become a member of the University – it’s kind of a big deal. Matriculation is very straightforward and contrary to popular belief you will not need to recite Latin or kneel at any time. That’s saved for Graduation. You’ll sign the matriculation sheet, agree to abide by the rules of the College and meet and greet the JCR President and the Senior Tutor.

You’ll need to congregate in the Auditorium at the following times according to your surname: M – Z 10.45am A – L 11.00am Please be on time.

(Again, give yourselves lots of time beforehand as you’ll no doubt want yet more photos!)

*Matriculation Photograph – Grove Lawn* *Formal wear and gowns

You will have an individual and a group photo taken - always a must for your parents, aunties, grandparents and the like. The group photo will be of the year group, the JCR President, your Tutors and Senior Members of the College including the Master. By the way, it’s not true that you have to wear black and white for the two photos, anything formal is fine!

Cambridge Societies’ Fair ft. Faculties – Meet at North Plodge The annual University-wide Societies’ Fair is the best opportunity to get out of your College shell and your first to properly explore Cambridge. There’ll be over 400 societies giving out information as well as lots of free stuff in a bid to get you to join. It might be a good idea to check out the Cambridge Societies Directory (http://www.cusu.co.uk/groups) to form an idea of what you want to sign-up to. Most importantly, there’ll be a Dominos stall giving out free pizza.

The fair is held over two days and is open all day, Tuesday is the first. Head down whenever suits you but if you’d like the opportunity to find out where your faculty is along the way (handy for when lectures start) then meet at North Plodge at 1:30pm and your handy JCR will be around to show you the way.

*Cycle Safety Seminar 2 – Gordon Cameron Lecture Theatre*

Another chance to sign up to this.

Fitz Up Look Sharp – Auditorium *Theme tbc £ Taking place twice just twice a year, this is a must not miss event showcasing the best musical talent Cambridge has to offer. It´s sure to join our past events in selling out so make sure you’ve nabbed a ticket off the Ents team ahead of time as you’ll need one to get in. We will announce our headliners nearer the time, but we promise, they’re big on the University music scene... Freshers from the other hill colleges (Medwards and Churchill), amongst others, will be there and so should you! Doors close at 10pm sharp, anyone arriving after this time will not be allowed to enter so make sure you’re on time! Find the event on the ‘Fitz Ents’ Facebook page!

Wednesday 7th October

4pm – 5pm

Boat Club Novice Open Day & BBQ – Meet at North Plodge/Otherwise at the Boathouse So you’ve signed up for rowing at the Fitz Societies Fair but you have no idea what it’s about? No worries. Here you’ll be able to socialise with the boaties over a BBQ then burn off those calories by getting in a boat with some seniors and giving it a try yourself. There’ll be a walking/cycling party heading to the boathouse at 10:45am, but feel free to drop in at any time during the day.

Registration with Huntington Road Surgery – Walker Room 11 It’s really important that you register with your nearest Surgery (only a 5 minute walk) in the case that you do need a GP. You’ll be able to do this in College. If not, you’ll have to go there in your own time - it’s really easy to do (directions: exit north plodge, turn right, walk straight for less than 500m, located on your right) so get this done and out of the way this week or you’ll regret it!

Tea Crawl – Meet in the JCR Cambridge is jam-packed (pun intended) with amazing places to go for tea so come along and learn from the wisdom of some older Fitzbillies. This is also another great opportunity to meet and bond with your year so even if you don’t like tea come along for some fun and order something else!

If you’re not already full from multiple slices of cake and a ‘cinnabun’ from Fitzbillies. then why not treat yourself to a typical pub meal in the company of your new Fitz family?

The afternoon will start with a party in the JCR featuring free food and drink provided by Cath Kidston for about 45 minutes. We’ll release a rough timetable of which teashops will follow and when on the ‘Fitz Ents’ Facebook page as well as on the JCR website so feel free to meet us along the way!

Cambridge University Dancesport Team Taster session – Reddaway Room Head to the Reddaway Room for a dance session with CUDT, one of the most successful sports teams in Cambridge. Learn basic steps from the Cha Cha to the Waltz, and enjoy demonstrations from the expert couples themselves. An hour-long session, this will prove to be a fun and rewarding hour of dancing!

*Cycle Safety Lecture 3 – Gordon Cameron Lecture Theatre*

Another chance to sign up to this.

Pub Quiz – Buttery We expect you already know how quizzes work. You might even think you’re quite good at them. But you have never done a Cambridge pub quiz. A quiz where the competitive streak that everyone tries to hide in the name of ‘making friends’ is revealed when you desperately try to remember the name of every member of S Club 7. The stakes are high, but at the end of the day it’s only a quiz, right? Find the event on the ‘Fitz Ents’ Facebook page.

Club Night @ Cindies – Meet in Bar Cindies is probably Cambridge’s most popular club and is definitely its cheesiest, playing a combination of recent chart hits, 90s pop and even the occasional Disney number (Lion King, anyone?). Students tend to flock here on a regular basis and tonight will be one of its busiest nights of term, so make sure to get your ticket in advance!

Cambridge Footlights show - ADC The Footlights are one of Cambridge’s most famous exports, and for many people are part of the reason that we chose Cambridge over Oxford! Every summer the Footlights makes an hour long show, of their best material, and tours it around the UK, for a month at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and then across the USA. They are performing their show (which has sold out a whole month run in Edinburgh!) at the ADC between the 6th and 10th of October at 11pm (with a 2.30pm matinee on the 9th October), so if you can find space in your packed first week definitely head on over! Buy your tickets at [email protected] and find more information about the show here http://www.adctheatre.com/whats-on/comedy/footlights-international-tour-show-2015-love-handles.aspx Any questions feel free to email/talk to one of the Ents team!

Block Dinners – Various locations, your corridor reps will be in touch £ What better way to round up your first week than a bonding dinner with your block? Organised on the first Saturday by your corridor reps, this is guaranteed to be the perfect opportunity to get to know the people you’re living with just that little bit better.

Clare Ents £ A popular destination on a Friday is Clare Cellars, playing host to live music and DJs. Previous performers include Tinie Tempah and Chase and Status. So if you’re in the mood to go out after your bonding dinner head to the bar at 9pm!

Welfare film night – Gordon Cameron Lecture Theatre You’ve had your dinner with your Fitz family and you’re now ready for a chilled quiet night in after your first two days of lectures. Who can turn down a bit of free popcorn? Head to the JCR for this week’s movie night, film tbc – all suggestions welcome! MCR – Bar You may have matriculated on Tuesday but today is that emotional moment for the Graduates of the College and in celebration you have been invited to their bop. This is a rare opportunity to mingle with the fancy MCR (Middle Combination Room – the body that represents the Grads) who you’ll inevitably see around. There’s good and bad news. Beyond Freshers’ Week

The Ents don’t stop because your work has started. Here’s a little taste of what’s coming up:

Family Superhall and Bop (only Thursday) – Wednesday 14th and Thursday 15th October 2015 – 19:30

Your first Superhall and a chance to get to know your college parents as well as your new brother or sister over a meal in formal hall. The best bit? The meal’s on them (they’ll also let you know what day they’ve booked you onto). As we don’t yet think you’ve had enough fancy dress, the theme is FAMOUS FAMILIES *shock/surprise*. You can stretch that as far as you like. In previous years there’s been everything from Monopoly Properties to Teletubbies. No matter what day you’re eating, join us at the bop after Thursday’s Superhall.

Halloween Superhall and Bop – Friday 30st October 2015 – 19:30

The last Superhall of term, look out for more information soon.

Bonfire Night @ the Boathouse – Thursday 5th November 2015 – TBC

It’s tradition for the undergrads to head to the boathouse to watch the City’s bonfire night fireworks display - hot

chocolate and snacks are of course provided!

Fitz Sessions – Various

A fantastic night of live music and performances in the bar. A few times a year, everyone gathers to watch Fitz’s musical and comedic talent (with a few acts brought in from around Cambridge). Barbershop, acoustic, Indie-pop bands, poetry and comedy etc. are all welcome to perform on a night not to miss.

Fitzmas – End of term

Fitz puts its own spin on Christmas. Expect Christmas Dinner and karaoke.

Re-Freshers’ Week – Beginning of Lent Term

Relive those golden moments once again.

Club Nights

Club nights during Freshers’ Week There is no paying on the door during Freshers’ week due to the high numbers so you’ll need to buy all your tickets in advance. There will be plenty of offers online to buy a week long wristband from either ‘BigFish’ or ‘Creem’, the two uni-wide club promoters. However, we’ve found that these haven’t proven to be good value in the past and as a result we’ve bulk bought a limited number of tickets to some of the best nights throughout the week for you guys anyway, so you can mix and match and buy these from us at cost during the week. We can assure you that you’ll be busy enough with everything we’ve planned for you and we’ll have everything you need and more when you arrive! Cambridge clubs There are four main clubs in Cambridge that you’ll encounter. Confusingly, two are not known by their actual names. There’s Life (actually called Kuda), Cindies (actually called Ballare), Lola Lo and Fez which are the most popular. Revs is the main alternative. Club nights during term time The Ents team will be able to hook you up with most of the club night tickets you want. CREEM run Sunday Fez, and Big Fish do Tuesday Cindies, Thursday Lola’s and Sunday Lola’s. Wednesday Cindies and Sunday Life are on the door, but if you put your name down on the Facebook event you can get cheaper entry. Every so often, there are alternative events such as Arc Soc and Turf, who bring in some pretty big DJs (last year, they had DJ Bone, Prosumer, Ben UFO and Floating Points, to name a few). If you’re looking for any tickets, make sure you message the Ents team - particularly Max, our resident promoter! SUNDAY Sunday night is arguably the biggest night out of the week, which will be much to the surprise of your friends at other Unis! There are a fair few options for you this time. Notoriously, Sunday night is pretty popular with society swaps, which tend to culminate in Life, so be prepared for cheesy songs and boys in matching ties and blazers. If that’s not your scene, then CREEM run a pretty good alternative night at Fez, which has the same sort of music as you’d find on a Thursday. If neither of these are getting you excited, then Big Fish runs a pretty good night at Lola’s, although this is admittedly a lot less popular than Fez and Life. Wherever you go, you can be sure of a fantastic post-night out portion of cheesy chips at Van of Life or Gardies. TUESDAY Pretty much the only night out on a Tuesday is Cindies, which is run by Big Fish. This doesn’t make it any less fun though! Playing all the usual Cindies classics, this night is a good laugh and usually has a big fresher turn out. WEDNESDAY The (in)famous Wednesday Cindies is another of Cambridge’s biggest nights. Despite playing each song for about 45 seconds due to licensing issues, and their weekly renditions of the cheesiest songs to grace any club (Lion King anyone?), this is much loved by students, especially after a few Jungbombs! THURSDAY Thursday nights in Cambridge are generally pretty divided between Lola Lo’s and Fez. If you’re looking for another dose of cheese after two nights in Cindies, then Lola’s is the place for you, with three floors playing a mixture of classic tracks and top 40 dance hits. If you’re looking for something a bit different, Fez is also pretty popular on this night, playing a mix of house, garage and R&B. FRIDAY Friday nights tend to be pretty busy, seeing as both students and locals alike flock to either Fez or Life. Life on a Friday is fairly similar to what you’ll find on a Sunday music-wise (although with a little less cheese), whereas Fez puts on another more alternative night called ‘Propaganda’, playing a mix of alt rock and indie tunes. Either way you’re guaranteed a good time (particularly with McDonalds being open 24 hours at the weekend). SATURDAY In preparation for a big night on Sunday, Saturdays tend to be a little quieter. However, if you’re up for a night out then you’re not short of things to do. Most popular amongst students is Wetherspoons (dubbed ‘dangerspoons’ due to the number of locals in attendance), which has cheap and cheerful drinks and a dance floor. If you’re feeling brave, head to Cindies for a more expensive but no less fun night out.
