T O U R SSEE THE CITY

Freshers’ Week is an amazing opportunity for you to meet lots of exciting new people, to explore our fantastic campus, and to have fun at a variety of events, from partying at the Freshers’ Ball to discovering the society for you at the Activities Fair.

University offers the opportunity to broaden your horizons, to try out new things and to ask as many questions as you can. There are so many great things going on this week and this guide will help you to work out where you want to be and when.

I’m one of your four full-time student officers, and my job is to oversee the events, shops and bars that EUSA provides, as well as make sure that sustainability is central to our services. I will be all over campus this Freshers’ Week, so make sure you come and say hi! You can also contact me throughout the year by email ([email protected]), Twitter (@eusavps) or Facebook (Urte Macikene EUSA VPS), or visit me in the EUSA office in Potterrow.

EUSA has provided you with an unforgettable week, jam-packed with events that everyone can enjoy. Have a great first week!

This will get you free entry into all the live entertainment events, the big party nights, ceilidhs, comedy, club nights, the Freshers’ Ball, See the City tours and everything else provided by EUSA in Freshers’ Week.

The Freshers’ Week wristband is only £40 for entry to all events for the whole week and could save you a lot of cash if you are planning on going to more than one or two things.

How to get your Freshers’ Week wristband:You can buy your wristband online or on arrival. To buy your wristband in advance, go to eusa.ed.ac.uk/freshers. Your wristband can be sent to you in advance (UK residents only) if ordered before Wednesday 2nd September or collected from the EUSA stall in Pollock Halls on the 12th and the 13th of September, and EUSA’s Baristo Box Office in Potterrow for the entirety of the week. ACADEMIC INDUCTION

Academic Induction

During Welcome Week your School will host a variety of events, including compulsory Welcome Talks and Subject Area activities. These events aim to introduce you to the academic staff who will be teaching and supervising you, the administrative staff who support you, and your fellow students. They will discuss important information about beginning your studies here at the University of Edinburgh. Make sure you read the information sent to you by your School for details about your specific School/Programme activities. You can find more information about academic events on the New Student website: ed.ac.uk/new-students.

Alongside EUSA’s Freshers’ Week the University itself will be offering you a warm welcome to your academic studies. The University refers to this week as ‘Welcome Week’ and you can look out for the Welcome Week logo on communications from your School/College and on signage around the campus.

Teviot, Underground 9.00pm – 12.00amEUSA

Two fantastic bands line up Teviot’s live music venue tonight.

Describing themselves as a ‘Gig attacked by an axe-wielding maniac’ BWANi have already seen nominations for Scottish Band of the Year, played the Edinburgh Hogmanay stage and recorded a full Radio 1 session at Maida Vale for Huw Stephens. Their infectious afro-beat sound will instantaneously inspire you to get up and dance, they are certainly a band to be reckoned with.

Dundee based MODEL AEROPLANES have been in the fast lane to stardom since their very beginnings when they secured a spot on the BBC introducing stage at T in the Park after just seven live shows. Since then they have been touring the UK, supporting the likes of Editors and producing brilliant pop songs with great hooks and a generous splash of good old rock and roll.

King Eider and Pronto Mama

Teviot, Underground 9.00pm – 12.00amEUSA

With a blend of traditional musical styles and left-field influences, KING EIDER weave sound and rhythm, melody and harmony to conceive a brilliant new breed of folk. Having released their highly esteemed debut album “The Deeper The Water” in 2014, King Eider announced their presence with a strong series of concerts, festival appearances and BBC radio exposure across the UK, and are now raising the roof in the Teviot Underground.

PRONTO MAMA are a six-piece progressive indie pop band from Glasgow and boy, do they know how to throw a party. Having played T in the Park’s T Break Stage, Wickerman and Go North festivals to name a few, Pronto Mama have certainly made an impression on the music scene, landing them a tour support slot with none other than Frightened Rabbit.

This slot in Freshers’ Week has brought us many bands that have gone on to do great things, so if you like live music, we strongly suggest you catch these bands while you can.

To ensure that you get the most out of this event we strongly recommend that you research your course options before attending. Check out the Academic Fair section of the ‘New Student’ webpages for information on how best to prepare in advance: ed.ac.uk/new-students.

YOUNG FATHERSwith support from CARBS

Potterrow8.00pm – 1.00amEUSA

Arrive early to avoid disappointment.

FREE WITH WRISTBAND

NO WRISTBAND: £10

One of Edinburgh’s big success stories – YOUNG FATHERS proudly brought home the Mercury Prize in 2014 for their album – Dead, beating considerably more famous bands to the title but absolutely deserved. Their 2015 album ‘White Men Are Black Men Too’ is a brilliant follow up and could easily be defined as lo-fi, R&B, hip hop – but they don’t completely fit into any box with their wide-spanning spread of alternative rap, indie pop, reggaeton, and electronic music.

In short, YOUNG FATHERS are brilliant. This is possibly your only chance to catch them without forking out £18 for a ticket, so our advice is to TAKE IT.

Supporting tonight are CARBS. Brainchild of electro genius brothers Jonnie Common and Jamie Scott (Conquering Animal Sound) – CARBS are basically the future. Think The Beastie Boys, signed to Anticon. Think lyrics discussing the merits of FIFA 95 versus FIFA 98. Think you’re going to have the best night ever, and you will. We promise you.

General Entry Guidelines

The venues have limited capacity; therefore, if the venue is at capacity you will not gain entry, regardless of all other rules.

It is not necessary during Freshers’ Week, or any other time of year, for matriculated University of Edinburgh students to prove that they are over 18 to gain entry to the union buildings. However, you are required to carry proof of age with you if you wish to purchase alcohol.

Only over 18s can drink or buy alcohol in our venues, all visitors will have their age checked upon entry to the building and those over 18 will be issued a wristband.

There is strictly no entry after 2am.

EUSA operates a strict no drinking in queues policy and those drinking in the queue will be denied entry.

Persons found to be under the influence will also not be admitted into the buildings.

Entry for Freshers’ Week Wristband Holders

A Freshers’ Week Wristband is not Proof of Age. So if you want to buy or drink alcohol at EUSA events you will need suitable photographic ID: a driving licence, passport or anything bearing a PASS logo. To find out more about the PASS scheme visit www.pass-scheme.org.uk.

A wristband grants free entry to all the EUSA events. The union buildings, when there are no specific events running, will still be open to everyone for the duration of Freshers’ Week.

A Freshers’ Week Wristband does not guarantee entry to any event due to capacity restrictions. Please be aware of this and arrive early to events that you wish to attend.

Entry for Students Without a Freshers’ Week Wristband

Individuals without a Freshers’ Week Wristband will be able to gain entry to events, however there may be a charge per event. The Freshers’ Wristband is designed to save you money if you wish to attend more than

2 or 3 events during the week it is recommended.

Individuals without a Freshers’ Week Wristband are not guaranteed entry to the unions on any night of Freshers’ Week.

Special door policy for Saturday 12th September

Saturday September 12th is the first day of Freshers’ Week 2015. If you haven’t bought a Freshers’ wristband yet, and decide to just pay to gain entry to ‘The Big Cheese featuring Union J’ as a single event and later decide you want to buy a Freshers’ Week Wristband, you may redeem the amount of this ticket against your Freshers’ Wristband on Sunday 13th when bringing the receipt to one of our box offices. This offer is only valid on Sunday 13th with a valid ticket receipt.

Special door policy for Post Grad and Mature Student Events

Potterrow is hosting a Ceilidh for Post Grad and Mature students on Wednesday 16th September.

ID is required to prove you are a

PG or Mature student - with an EU Matric card and proof that you are over 21.

This is also applicable for the Mature Cheese in Teviot’s Debating Hall on Tuesday 15th September.

See The City Tours

Due to the limited number of spaces on our See the City trips, you will need a ticket. Therefore, you will need to pick up your ticket in advance, on the day of the tour from any of the box offices.

All See the City trips are free for wristband holders, but you will still need to pick up a ticket. If you do not have a Freshers’ Wristband, some tours can cost £5. All tours require you to get a ticket from Baristo Box Office prior to leaving time!

Only one ticket will be given in advance per person.

YOU ARE ONLY ABLE TO PICK UP TICKETS ON THE DAY OF YOUR TOUR. Tickets will be available from 9am.

These policies will be strictly adhered to:

DO NOT LOSE IT

Treat your wristband with great care, DO NOT CUT IT OFF DURING FRESHERS’ WEEK. If you lose it you won’t be able to get into certain events, and it would be a shame for you to miss out.

Unfortunately we will be unable to replace lost wristbands.

Please also be aware that wristbands that have been altered will not be accepted.

If you find your wristband is fraying, please contact the box office.
