RCMP warn of scamsThere has been a rise in Merritt of on-
line scams. Scammers are doing every-thing they can to try to take your money and police want to remind you to remain vigilant and be skeptical.
On May 3, a complainant reported he tried to purchase 20ft shipping containers from someone off Facebook, $3,000 each or 4 for $11,000, delivered. He e-trans-ferred almost $10,000 to the seller, who after receiving the money, stopped all communication.
On May 8, a complainant reported that a relative was in an online relationship with a man she had never met, who said he was from in California. He convince the woman to send him bank drafts.
On May 13, a complainant attempt-ed to purchase a Bobcat Excavator from a company in Madrid. He transferred $9,000 before realizing it was a fraud. The same Auto Trader advert had reportedly been posted 12 times all across Canada.
On May 14, a complainant reported she had started an online relationship with a man who portrayed himself as a business man who travelled the world. He convinced her to transfer $6,000 into a Swiss bank account so he could invest it in a company where the return would be 100%. After transferring the money, she realized it may be a scam and asked for her money back. The scammers attempt-ed to scam her out of more money before she ultimately reported the scam to police.

Recovery advisorThe City of Merritt is one of 36 recipi-
ents that have received funding from the Economic Trust of the Southern Interior (ETSI-BC), to hire a specialist to work and assist with economic recovery.
The funding is part of the Province of British Columbia’s StrongerBC Plan, and it is focused on helping rural communi-ties of less than 25,000 residents.
"These Recovery Advisor positions will be important tools to help rural com-munities and businesses rebuild and re-bound. The hands-on work of these advi-sors will provide a wealth of supports in communities, from marketing and e-com-merce expertise to referrals and research. It’s all about building capacity within our rural Southern Interior communities."

Another dam gate change, yesterdayNicola Lake continues to rise towards its target, and should reach its “full pool”
in early June. On Monday, the dam operator informed the City of Merritt that slight-ly more water would be let out yesterday, in order to prevent the lake level from rising too fast.
The outflow into the Nicola River through Merritt had been reduced of late, and with this gate change, Merritt will still be taking less water than we were a week ago. River levels have dropped slightly since the last announcement, and remain "very comfortable for us", said City of Merritt Director of Corporate Services, Greg Lowis.
With being now well into freshet season, City and Provincial staff remain confi-dent that there is no risk of flooding. Further gate changes may be needed to respond to weather events, to ensure the lake peaks at the target time.
Delivery of 2nd vaccine doses to be accelerated“The more people who get vaccinated, the safer we all are, which is why we want
to break the record books on immunizations in our province, said Dr. Bonnie Henry.“First doses are well underway and second doses will be coming soon. With a
large, steady vaccine supply and an assurance that most people have their first dose, we will be able to look at how we may be able to accelerate delivery of second doses. We’re monitoring this closely and will have more to share in early June."
According to Merritt Chapter - Rural & Remote Division of Family Practice, Int. Health says that over 6,000 people have received a first dose of vaccine in Merritt.
