Dear families and friends, Creating opportunities for sharing information and generating dialogue is really important for a healthy school community. While my feedback so far is that these sessions were well received, I know there is work to be done. We have been welcoming our new Kindy families in this week, as well as running information sessions for our families whose children are moving from Pre Primary to Year 1. We trialled a “How to Prepare for Secondary School” information session with Fremantle College, which went well. We will be running a similar session in the new year for Year 4&5 families. There is some info on that secondary session on Page 2. Last Friday was UNESCO’s World Teachers’ Day. The P&C secretly set up a beautiful spread of treats for the teachers. It was a gorgeous surprise, and on behalf of the staff, I would like to thank the P&C, especially Sharon, Stuart and Zoe for being so sneaky and kind. To help us think about Care and Diversity in our school, we had some special guests at our Values Assembly. Role models from Autism West put on a special presentation for the students about what Autism meant for them, they described how people with Autism can see the world in a different way to others and what things might affect peoples’ behaviours. Thank you Daniel (Ms Burmas’ -Y3 prac teacher in Term 3 - brother) Phil and AJ (14 years old from Seton College) for your generous and informative session. Much of this week has been about information and communication, so I thought I’d take this opportunity to share Department of Education info sheet about ‘Talking with my school’. This document can also be found on our school website. We welcome positive communication and will strive to get back to any written requests during work hours. Dear families and friends,

Creating opportunities for sharing information and generating dialogue is

really important for a healthy school community. While my feedback so far

is that these sessions were well received, I know there is work to be done.

We have been welcoming our new Kindy families in this week, as well as

Moving to Secondary School

On Tuesday, we sat with Janelle Mitonette, Associate Principal of Fremantle College, who did an

amazing job at answering a range of questions about secondary school. Pearls of wisdom included:

Inform yourself early about courses and schools.

Attend open days and tours where you can.

Secondary schools prefer to have an idea of enrolment numbers early, so enrol early.

If you’re not enrolled you won’t get to participate in orientation or transition days.

Chose schools where your children will be happiest.

Don’t sign up for programs that your children aren’t interested in.

Check to see if you’re in the catchment area.

Consider travel time and the toll that takes on children routines, friendships and wellbeing.

Timelines:

Applications for Gifted and Talented programs (the online entrance exam) close on Sun-

day 9th February. See Education.wa.edu.au/giftedandtalented , Phone 9264 4307

Year 7 enrolments are to be received by the first Friday of Term 3 (22nd May 2020) for De-

partment of Education schools.

Applications for Specialist programs and Academies should be received by Friday 22 May

2020

We currently have a range of secondary school brochures (including Iona, Melville, John Curtin,

Fremantle College, SMC and Seton) in the foyer for you to take at your convenience.

Thank you to all who came. We will be running a similar informal session in Term 2, 2020.

Please, we ask that parents not drop their children off at school before 8.30am. If students

are on the grounds earlier ie. 8.20am, they need to go directly to the school library where

they can be supervised. Children should not be in the playground or on verandahs. They will

be dismissed from the Library at 8.35am.

If you need to drop your child off at school earlier than 8.20am, please consider Wanslea

Family Services, who run the Before and After School Care program on site.

Did you know that this past month, around the world, October has been celebrated as International

AAC Awareness, Advocacy and Action month? “What is AAC?” you may well be wondering.

AAC stands for Augmentative and/or Alternative Communication and refers to all forms of communi-

cation that people may use instead of or in addition to speech.

At Fremantle Primary School, we are already aware of some of the different ways people may com-

municate. For example, all of our students have the opportunity to learn Auslan and our deaf stu-

dents and their families use Auslan as their primary means of communicating whilst our interpreters

use both Auslan and speech all day. Many of us use other forms of AAC to help us communicate at

different times – some of us will solve a breakdown in communication using facial expression, body

language and gesture or perhaps using writing to get our message across instead of speaking or sign-

ing.

There are other forms of AAC too which include symbol boards or symbol books or high-tech devices

including communication apps on an iPad. When we are learning any language – be that a spoken

language, a signed language or a symbols-based language – it is hugely important, if not essential, to

have lots of opportunities to see and/or hear other people using that language, to be immersed in

that language so that we can experience how that language is used and we can in time learn to use

that language ourselves.

This newsletter includes a one page board showing the home screen of an AAC device, or talker,

used by one of our students at Fremantle Primary School. Take a bit of time to build your own AAC

Awareness and then take some AAC Action with your family and friends:

See if you can find the words to point to as you say (or sign) some of these messages to each other…

JANUARY 2020 JUMP-START PROGRAMS NAPLAN -- Study Skills – Essay Writing – Subject Revision & Preparation

For all students entering Year 7 – 12 in 2020

The January Preparation Program aims to prepare students for Term 1 (2020) before the academic

year begins. The classes will revise those important components from the 2019 syllabus that are vital

for success in the new year. The program will also preview what students can expect in their

courses in 2020.

Best Photo Ever! Winners are Grinners

Cook Book Fundraiser

After a couple of stressful weeks thinking that we weren’t going to get enough recipes to

proceed with our cook book fundraiser, a desperate plea and an avalanche of last minute sub-

missions got us (well and truly) over the line.

We chose a cook book fundraiser because we thought it would be a fun way to bring us all

together and get to know one another (hence the family photos), provide inspiration in the

kitchen and, of course, raise money for our school and, in turn, our kids.

After seeing the recipes submitted, we are more excited than ever to produce our FPS cook

book!

With recipes from Russia, China, Armenia, Indonesia, Brazil, France, Mexico and Germany – it’ll

feel like we’re all holidaying at home every night.

But seriously, what we really love are the family recipes – Great Grandpa’s Easy Lemon

Cheesecake, Grandma’s Toll House Choc Chip Cookies, Millie’s Five Minute Tea Cake, Nana’s

Summer Roll, Tata’s Chilli, Nona’s Ceci Soup and My Irish Mammy’s Christmas Cake. This is what

it’s all about.

So, THANK YOU to everyone who got onboard and submitted a recipe.

We can’t wait to share your recipes with our school community.
