MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Dear Parents and Caregivers

Founders’ DayUnfortunately, for the second year in a row, the weather prevented the whole school from celebrating together, despite having moved the date from August (as it has been in past years) to September to avoid this problem.

However, we had a fantastic celebration in the Secondary School and will look forward to a combined Halls Head campus and Meadow Springs campus Primary School celebration in Term 4.

A section of my speech to the Secondary School follows:

Today, as we celebrate our 28th Anniversary, we honour the Founders of our School, those

people who had the vision to build an Anglican school here in Mandurah, right here on Gordon Road. Frederick Irwin Anglican School has grown from small beginnings to the wonderful school it is today with over 1400 students on our Meadow Springs campus and 165 on our (still new) Halls Head campus. We are grateful for their foresight and for the many hours they put into making their dreams a reality so that we can benefit today. Yet it is not just they who have made the school what it is in 2019; every student, every staff member who has been ‘a part of the Frederick Irwin Anglican School’ has left their presence on their way through, from here to there. For some it has just been a passage through the school, but for many, it has been a distinctive experience as they have poured their hearts and souls into our school to build it up to be the exceptional institution for learning that it is today.

And so the question now has to be asked: How will you and I make a difference in this school so that it continues to be as special as it is; so that it changes apace with or ahead of the advances in education and our understanding of how learning takes place; so that remains at the forefront of teaching young people the skills they need as they go into the beckoning future?

I found this quote which challenges us to be innovative, creative and forward thinking as we look to enhance the educational opportunities of our school: ‘Honour the past, celebrate the present; invent the future!’

At the start of the term I spoke to staff initially and then to Secondary students at the first assembly about ‘Shining’. ‘Shine on, brighter than the sun, live for every moment, before the moment’s gone.’

Our Founders knew how to do that, they had a vision for Frederick Irwin Anglican School – they shone on, brighter than the sun – how proud they would have been of our school if they could see it today. Every day, we have the opportunity to live their vision though the School’s ethos and values; and we too must have a vision, we too must shine on bright than the sun, to leave a legacy for those who will be here in 2025, 2030, 2050 and hopefully beyond.

And so today, as we honour the past and celebrate the future, let us take up the challenge to shine on as we invent the future.

CampsAs I write, two year groups are on camp – the Year 9s are on the annual Outdoor Education Camp (with the balance of the Year 9 students enjoying the Alternative Programme); while the Year 11s are enjoying their ‘city experience’. For me, as it is every year, the River Cruise on Thursday night was a highlight.

My thanks goes to the many staff members who have worked untiringly to make these camps possible an enable them to run smoothly.

Year 12sOur Year 12s will be writing their Trial Examinations during the holidays. We wish them all the best as they study to give of their best at this very important time in their education.

MESSAGE FROM THE SCHOOL CHAPLAIN

Dear Parents I went shopping over the weekend.

Better still, I accompanied my wife shopping. I don’t mind it, but usually take a Kobo with me and findanicecornertositin, andwhenneededgivemy approval or ‘maybe not’ opinion. What struck me more than anything else is how the world has changed with brands. Many of the household names of 30 years ago, evenfiveyearsagohavegoneortransformedintoa new ‘name’. Some of the brand names seem almost impossible to pronounce correctly because their spelling doesn’t determine necessarily how you pronounce the name (good example, not in clothing, quinoa or Huawei...even Nike, Hyundai).

How do you choose when you don’t recognise the name which is usually associated with good or bad quality? How do you know what to choose? Be it organic or fair trade or renewable products?

In the last 40 years Christianity has tried to meet market demands and presentation. There have been loads of gimmicky things and events (in fact there still are) in an attempt to attract potential new believers.

In the end though, there can be no compromise on the message and if the message is lost in the presentation, then as Christians we have failed to be faithful in an attempt to be relevant.

Christianity certainly presents itself in different ways…Anglicare, Red Shield Appeal, Street Connect, Hillsong etc. Each one is an outworking of the absolute truth, that God is love and that means God cares for all people.

The Internet has allowed shoppers to explore brands before they buy. I encourage you, if you are not sure of the foundations of any agency, explore their brand and see if they live the Christian message in all that they do; that the quality has not been compromised to make their agency relevant.

God Bless

MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF PRIMARY - MEADOW SPRINGS

Dear Parents and Caregivers

Another busy term comes to a close today, and it has been a most industrious time which has included many highlights and achievements. Last Saturday, Mrs Rudland took our Year 6 and Year 5 Opti-Minds teams, whohadwontheirRegionalfinal,totheStatefinalswheretheYear6teamplacedfirst.Thiswas a very impressive achievement and I congratulate them on behalf of the School community. All teams who participated, from both campuses are to be praised for their dedication and efforts. Last week, a team of environmentally aware Eco Committee members headed off to the Kids Teaching

Kids Conference and shared their environmental message with other schools from the Peel region. Thank you to Mrs Wade for her excellent leadership of these students. As a school, we are very mindful of making sure we are educating our students to be environmentally aware and thinking about their imprint on the planet so initiatives such as this are helping to further our endeavours in this area.

The Year 1 Grandparents Day held last week, was a wonderful opportunity for our Year 1 students to showcase their learning and to learn about school life in another era. The sound of joyous sharing and the telling of many tales added much to the morning. Thank you to the parents and family members who contributed to the wonderful morning tea and the staff for their organisation of this lovely opportunity for inter-generational involvement.

As happened last year, we were sad to have to re-schedule our Founders’ Day activities because of the weather, but we look forward to the opportunity to gather early in Term 4 to recognise and celebrate our wonderful school. Parents and caregivers are welcome to join us for the celebrations on Wednesday 6 November.

The Operation Christmas Child Appeal has been extended to the end of Week 1, Term 4 to allow families shopping time over the holidays. Thank you to those who have contributed so far. We look forward to sending many boxes away to brighten Christmas for those less fortunate than ourselves. Thank you to the Primary staff and community members who have contributed to the many activities that have characterised the term. We continue to provide many exciting learning experiences for our students, and your assistance with these is greatly appreciated.

Iwisheveryonearestful,safeandjoy-filledholiday.

Kind regards

MESSAGE FROM THE DEPUTY HEAD OF PRIMARY - MEADOW SPRINGS

Dear Parents “Where did Term 3 go?” I have heard many parents and teachers ask this exact question over the last weeks of this term. Term 3 provides a real opportunity for students to consolidate their learning from earlier in the year. With the students now well-established into the school year with classroom rules and routines, there are many opportunities for students to really ‘knuckle-down’ with their schoolwork and tasks.

Additionally, one of the great things about Term 3 is for the students to contribute to events outside of the classroom. Whilst it was great for the students to participate in Athletics Carnivals, Orienteering

Championships, Fathers’ Day events, Grandparents’ mornings and so on, one of the highlights for me was the Book Week Parade held in Week 5. The students (and parents) didsuchawonderfuljobwithdressingupasabook-firstcharacter;however,thebestsighthadtobetheteachers’‘flashmob’attheconclusionoftheassembly.Itwasgreatfor the students to see the teachers in a different light and my hat goes off to the courage the teachers showed and the energy they put into the performance!

Term 4 events OurmindnowturnstoTerm4,whichtraditionallygoesbyinaflash,sostrapyourselvesin!There are many events to look forward to and you may like to make a note of these for your calendar:

I am also looking forward to giving our Year 5 students the opportunity to put forward expressions of interests for the House Captain roles in 2020. More information will be provided to Year 5 students throughout Term 4.

In the meantime, I wish all students and families a well-earned rest and relaxation. Whether you are travelling afar, or staying close to home, take care over the coming break. I look forward to students returning in their summer uniforms on Tuesday 15 October.

Kind regards

MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF PRIMARY - HALLS HEAD

Dear Parents We have come to the end of a busy term. I’m very proud of our students’ efforts and am impressed with the rich learning experiences that our students are learning from. This term many classes have been exploring the bush and investigating the many learning experiences that nature pedagogy has to offer. With the weather shift we have had to put these experiences on hold until next year, but an artistic depiction of some of these adventures is currently displayedintheoffice, createdbynoneotherthanourtalented Pre-Primary students.

I hope that everyone has a refreshing break and gets an opportunity to spend time with loved ones. I will be busy taking my own children to basketball and soccer games and enjoying this special time. Term 4 will be very busy with swimming lessons, an Open Morning and many fantastic assemblies and services. I wish everyone a wonderful break and look forward to greeting students onthefirstdayback.

Inclusive Morning TeaOn Thursday 19 September we held our latest Inclusive Morning Tea at the Meadow Springs campus.JacintaO’Connorwasourguestspeakerandspokeaboutimprovingmentalhealthandwellbeingthroughnutritionandnaturopathy.Jacinta’spresentationwasengagingandwellreceived.WeareappreciativeofJacintaspeakingtoourcommunityandofferinginformationand strategies. These morning teas have been very successful and are an opportunity for our community to come together. We will continue to hold these sessions and look forward to planning the next morning tea at Halls Head.

Inter School Athletics Carnivals The Inter-School Athletics carnival will take place on Wednesday 23 October and will be a wonderful opportunity for students in Years 3 to 6 to represent our school in the community. More detailed information on the event will be sent home shortly. We appreciate all of the organisation Mrs Shepherd has provided at all of our Athletic Carnivals. Moreover, we appreciate all of the help that our staff and parents have been able to give at these events as well. Our volunteers help make these carnivals special for our students.

Uniform The time away from school will be an opportunity for students to have deserved break. It is a time to grow our hair, enjoy family time and refresh ourselves for an exciting term full of opportunity. With this being said, could I please ask that when students return to school, their uniforms are meeting our Uniform Policy.

Founders’ DayThankyouforeveryone’sunderstandingandflexibilityinthereschedulingofFounders’Day.Thestructure of the day will remain the same, but will now be held on Wednesday 6 November.

Student LeadershipIn my last newsletter, I mentioned that our Year 6 students were beginning a partnership with Amana Living and Wearne House. I’m very excited about the opportunity of our oldest Primary students to participate in service learning. We will also be conducting a House Captain assembly on Friday 18 October, which will be a lovely opportunity for these student leaders to demonstrate their responsibility. These same students will be accompanying me to Parliament House on 17 October as guests of Mr Zak Kirkup, MP Liberal Member for the District of Dawesville.

Kind regards

Noah Clark Head of Primary – Halls Head
