MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Dear Parents and Caregivers

Welcome to Term 3! This term we will be continuing our 2018 theme of Optimism with our focus returning to the quote from Ralph Waldo Emerson with which we started the year: Write it on your heart that every day is the best day in the year.

When I spoke with staff at the start of term, I added this quote from A.A. Milne’s Winnie the Pooh which brought a smile to my face and warmed my heart:

What day is it?” asked Pooh“It’s today,” squeaked Piglet.

“My favourite day,” said Pooh.

MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF PRIMARY - MEADOW SPRINGS

Dear Parents and Caregivers Welcome back to the new term. I hope everyone has had an enjoyable break. This term, we welcome Ms Shannon Bodlovich in 4M1andMrsLeeSierackiinMusic.Theyarecovering for Mrs Mader and Mrs Mattson who are on long service leave for Term 3.

At the end of Term 2, reports were made available electronically and it is hoped that every family has been able to access their child’s reports. If there have been any problems with the process, please do not

hesitate to contact the School. When reading your child’s report it is important to remember that a ‘C’ grade is working at the expected level for the year level and that most students will achieve this grade in both Semester 1 and Semester 2. An A or B grade indicates that your child is demonstrating achievement above the expected level for a student in that particular year level. The students are graded against the Achievement Standards for each learning area, as set out by the Western Australian Curriculum, and grades are not assigned on a ranking system where the highest achieving students get an A, the next a B and so on. It is really important to have this understanding so students who receive a ‘C’ grade can be proud of their efforts and achievements.

Parents are able to request an interview with their child’s teacher following the issuing of reports. If you would like to take advantage of this opportunity, please contact your classroom teacher to arrange an appointment. If the teacher has requested an interview, they will make contact to set up a meeting early in the term.

I am looking forward to a productive term as we have quite a few sporting events and learning opportunities that will allow for community involvement. Founders’ Day will be held later in the term and this day provides a wonderful opportunity to celebrate our school and its heritage. Families will be invited to join the students for the festivities and information relating to the day will be outlined in upcoming newsletters.

Kindregards

MESSAGE FROM THE DEPUTY HEAD OF PRIMARY - MEADOW SPRINGS

Dear Parents and Caregivers Uniforms Welcome to Term 3 and I hope all Frederick Irwin families have enjoyed a restful school holidays. All students have looked smart andhavebeenwearingtheiruniformswithprideinthefirstweekof Semester 2. I will be conducting uniform inspections across the Primary School next week to ensure our students are maintaining a high standard of presentation. Thank you for your ongoing support in ensuring our students are always representing Frederick Irwin with pride when around our campus and in the community before and after school.

Restorative Approaches Like our uniforms, we have an expectation for all students to maintain high behaviour standards throughout aschoolday.Ihavebeenimpressedbyourstudents’behaviourthroughoutthisyearandinthefirstweekofSemester2.Therehavebeensomanyexamplesofourstudentsexhibitingthefivecorevaluesof Frederick Irwin Anglican School when in the classroom, in the playground or when representing the school on an excursion.

We do understand that because our students are still children, they of course will make mistakes from time to time with their behaviour. Our role as teaching staff is to work with all our students to ensure they learn from their mistakes and make better choices in the future. This is where our restorative approach at Frederick Irwin plays such a strong part.

Where applicable, students still have consequences for any misbehaviour at school but these consequencesensurethatthestudenthasachancetoreflectonthechoicestheyhavemadeandwhatthey need to do better next time. A restorative approach is much more rigorous than simply just giving a detention, forexample, toachild.Itrequiresthechildtodoadeepreflectionandthinkabouttheiractionsand the consequences of these. It ensures that they are accountable for any choices they have made.

A restorative approach can be applied very simply and at its basic core involves the child to think about the following 3 questions. These may also be useful around the home as you manage the complex dynamics of raising a family.• Whathashappened?• Whohasbeenaffected, andhow?• Whatareyougoingtodotosortitout? If you have any further questions regarding a restorative approach, please don’t hesitate to contact me to make an appointment.

Self-Regulation We are in a fortunate position in education today that we know so much more about brain development andhowwecanbestsupportourKindergartentoYear6studentsthroughoutanygivenday.Thereissomuch information available now about the importance of teaching our children skills such as self-regulating and self-control. Evidence is showing that children learning self-regulation and executive functioning skills, such as problem solving and planning, will have greater academic success than those solely relying on their IQ.

In the Primary School here at Frederick Irwin we offer many opportunities for children to be taught these skills, as well as practice them. From Investigations at a young age, through to participating in the ERP process, children have an opportunity to practise important skills such as planning, time management, awarenessandempathy,amongstothers.TheteachingofFriendlySchoolsacrosstheKindergartentoYear6classesensuresthatallstudentsareeducatedonspecificself-managementskillsthatwillhelpthembest regulate their emotions. Our classroom teachers are also consistently supporting students as to how to best control their emotions throughout any given day when talking with them about their recess and lunch breaks, or leading community circles and class meetings.

There is of course so much that you, as parents, are doing day-to-day to best support your child to develop their self-regulation skills. This might be simple things from teaching your child what sort of things they need to do if in a heightened state or supporting your child in their co-curricular interests, which in-turn supports the development of self-regulation. If you are interested in learning more about your child’s social and emotional development, the website www.bringingupgreatkids.org/en offers very practical suggestions and ideas to help in the complex world of raising children.

MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF PRIMARY - HALLS HEAD

Dear Parents and Caregivers

Welcome BackI truly enjoyed speaking to students and families as they arrived on Wednesday morning. It was nice to hear about the many adventures each family had over the break. I spoke to all students on Wednesday and formally welcomed them back and encouraged them to set personal goals and give their best effort this term. I informed the students that we were very proud of their achievements in Semester 1 and want them to continue this fantastic progress. I’m excited about the learning opportunities that await our students and know that it will be an exciting and productive term.

Student LeadershipToday the House Captains conducted their assembly, which focused on the Core Values. The Captains demonstrated maturity and responsibility in delivering their message to their peers. Our Core Values are the fabric of our School and it was lovely to witness our student leaders emphasising this message in a creative way. I want to congratulate our Captains for their organisation and commitment. The Captains brainstormed the planning and structure of the assembly, whichonceagainreflectstheirmaturity.Weapplaudourstudentleadersfortheir efforts and can see that their leadership skills are continuing to develop.

Music TuitionSpeaking with Miss Brockman yesterday, she is very excited to begin Music Tuition next week. I’m very happy that we can offer this tuition to our families and look forward to these students performing in the future at our assemblies.

This is another service that I’m very happy to be able to offer our students, and our daily orders have already begun. Please be aware that family photos are not available.

UniformI have spoken to all classrooms about uniform and let students know that this week is a transition week. These three days are a time to ensure that uniform and hair meets our uniform standards. Next week I will be visiting every class to ensure that all students are wearing the correct uniform.

Upcoming EventsI’m very excited about the upcoming Athletics Carnivals as both campuses will be combined. Dear Parents and Caregivers

Doyougettiredofsameness?BythatImean,doyoustrugglewiththeeveryday?

I am in awe of people who can have repetitive jobs and be happy. One of the leaders of our Cambodiatripspentseven(7)years,seven(7)daysa week, sewing on shirt pockets - nothing else... shirt pockets. She set herself a goal and that was to save enough money to buy her and her parents a house. She achieved that goal and the new house is nearly finished.Sheholdsnoregretsabouthertimesewing, because she sees it as a time of building character, and her relationship with God.

She is now a leader in a Christian organisation in Cambodia, and she is a good leader, because she understands the struggle with sameness, and the need to keep hope foremost in your sights; to be able to see beyond today, but also to deal positively with everyday challenges.

Perhaps we overuse the word ‘bored’ in Western Society when we should be talking about individuals lacking motivation and seeing hope for their future. Students who journey overseas are amazed at the work ethic of the people they meet, while recognising in themselves how easily they revert to ‘I’m bored’. They also see that for many, the hope that God gives them is their motivation for living each and everyday to the full, without being trapped in the ‘I’m bored’ mindset.

Tuning in to Teens shows you how to help your teen develop emotional intelligence. Teenagers with higher emotional intelligence:

have greater success with making and keeping friends

have better concentration at school

are more able to calm down when upset or angry

tend to have fewer illnesses

Emotional intelligence may be a better predictor of academic and career success than IQ!
