Dear Parents and Caregivers

Child Safe SchoolEach year I like to draw your attention to the Protective Behaviour programmes we use in the School. The importance of teaching our children, teenagers and young adults how to keep themselves safe in a variety of areas is something we take very seriously at Frederick Irwin Anglican School.

In Primary, the Holding Hands programme has been fully adopted; while in Years 7 to 10, the Keeping Safe programme is mapped to the Protective Behaviours curriculum taught through Health classes. For Years 11 and 12, the Pathways programme has always contained age-appropriate Protective Behaviours material.

Frederick Irwin Anglican School is also an eSmart school, with a great deal of work being done in CyberSafety as well as around the more ‘traditional’ types of bullying.

Elsewhereinthisnewsletteryouwillfindarticleswithsomeveryhelpfultipsforparentswhomaybeconcernedabout bullying, as well as information about the School’s involvement in the National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence – Bullying. No Way!

Parents are reminded that on the Meadow Springs and Halls Head campuses, Primary students have the opportunity to report bullying as well as other concerns through the Voice Box in each hall; while Secondary students have the opportunity to report bullying and cyberbullying through the Get Help ‘button’ on the Student Intranet. This takes Secondary students to a page which outlines ways in which they can get help immediately and/or in good time should they need it (including links to Kids Help Line and Headspace), as well as ‘buttons’ such as ‘Report Bullying’, ‘Report a Concern’ and ‘Make a Complaint’. Please ask you child to show you this page in the Student section of the Intranet.

I would also like to remind parents of the following important policies which are easily available for parents to readontheSchool’swebsite(OurSchool→Policies):

•ChildSafePolicy(AnglicanSchoolsCommission) •BullyingandHarassmentPolicy •StaffCodeofConductPolicy

Last year the School completed a full audit of our Child Safe Practices and this document was reviewed at the start of 2019 by Executive staff members.

Staff training in Child Safety continues to be one of our priorities, and we will continue to offer parent workshops and seminars, as we have done in the past.

A helpful website for parents is that of the Commissioner for Children and Young People – www.ccyp.wa.gov.au

Year 6 Canberra TripI had a delightful day at Taronga Zoo with our Year 6s on the last leg of their Canberra trip. They were buzzingwithexcitementbut,Ithinkbythisfinalday,wereverytiredtoo.OurYear6sagainreceivedmanycompliments about their fantastic manners, behaviour and willingness to participate – even when they were out of their comfort zones; and this, as always, made me very proud to be a member of Frederick Irwin Anglican School. My sincere thanks goes to the staff!

8 CampOur Year 8s return from their camp today. I was unfortunately not able to join them this year, but have received great reports and been able to look at some wonderful photos over the past few days.

Again, my thanks goes to the many staff who participated in this important annual event.

Year 12 Parent Information EveningI was thrilled to see so many parents at our Year 12 Information Evening on Monday night. A great deal of information was shared by our Careers Advisor, Mrs Daphne Bailey, and the Deputy Principals, Mrs Georgie Solomon and Mr Andrew Pennycott; while parents asked pertinent questions. Please don’t hesitate to contact the School and, in particular the staff members mentioned above, should you have any further queries or concerns.

Kind regards

MESSAGE FROM THE SCHOOL CHAPLAIN

Dear Parents and Caregivers

I have been intrigued by the latest Easter decorations that seem to be Christmas decorations with an egg theme. There are wreaths and egg nests and egg everything, besides the chocolate imaginings. Reindeer have been substituted with chicks and the Christian event is almost looking like a festival to celebrate the egg. Eggs are a symbol of new life and that is why they are so much a part of the Easter celebration. But, like Christmas, there is no sign of why we celebrate Easter in all that is commercially presented.Christian schools are charged with the responsibility to share the trueEasterstoryacrossthegrades.Wewillcelebrateandreflect.In Primary we have asked God to help us change our ways and reachouttoothers(AshWednesday)andwehavereflectedonthis during Lent in the lead up to our Easter celebrations.

This year I will be with a group of students and staff celebrating Easter with a Christian minority in Cambodia; that will bring a whole new meaning to Easter for me and the students and staff.

Walkabout Cambodia 2020Last week I conducted interviews for Walkabout Cambodia 2020. Frederick Irwin has 16 available spotsforthistrip.Atpresentwehavefivevacancies.Thepilgrimageisgoingaheadaswealsohavenumbers from John Wollaston Anglican Community School and Peter Carnley Anglican Community School where I presented in late February and early March. There is still an opportunity for any interested student to apply, be interviewed and invited before the end of term. Applications can be found in the Y drive under OSL.

Family and Friends ServiceThe Family and Friends Service is to be held in the Rush Chapel on Sunday 7 April at 9.30 am. The service is open to all members of the school community. Dear Parents and Caregivers

In Week 4, 86 of our Year 6 students, from across both campuses, undertook an educational tour of the national capital, Canberra. Students were given the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational programs with a focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage and democracy. The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion, the Australian Government contributed funding of $240.00 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards those costs. Mr Teape was very pleased with how the students conducted themselves and represented the School and their families. Thank you to the Year 6 Staff, Mrs Sue Kirke, Father Noel Oakey and Mrs Patricia Rehm who also accompanied the

group. Information relating to the 2020 tour will be presented to Year 5 families at the Year 5 Camp Parent Information Meeting next week, and initial documentation will be given out. We look forward to taking many of the Year 5 students to Canberra in 2020.

On Thursday evening, Dr Kathy Murray spoke to a group of community members from across both campuses about play-based and inquiry learning and its importance for 21st Century citizens. She also talked in-depth about how the elements of the Walker Learning Approach address these important life skills. Kathy was practical, engaging and possessed a wealth of knowledge that was readily shared with the audience. It was also heartening to see other educators from around the Mandurah area listening to Kathy speak. As other opportunities present themselves, I encourage community members to take advantage of these offerings.

Last week I received an email congratulating a group of our Year 5 and Year 6 students for their sportsmanship and support of a fellow team member during a weekend cricket match. To read of their display of our Core Values to assist a teammate and, in the case of two students, an opposition team member was very heartening. Through the teaching and embedding of our Core Values and the emphasis of the pedagogy on relationships, we see this consideration of others as a natural extension for the students in their development.

Students in Years 3 to Year 6 commenced swimming lessons at Doddi’s Beach this week. Mr Ford has reportedthatthelessonsaregoingwellandthefineweatherhascertainlyaddedtotheenjoymentofthelessons for the students. Parents and caregivers are reminded that the students are required to wear a rashie or t-shirt, but not the School sports polo shirt, to avoid sunburn during their lessons.

Workbooks have been sent home today with the students from Pre-Primary to Year 6. Some of the work completed in the learning areas of English and Mathematics is contained in the workbooks. This opportunity allows you to discuss your child’s work with them. Please return the books to school on Monday morning.

As we head towards the end of the term, it is time to plan for the two and three-way conferences which will be held in Week 9 and Week 10. Information regarding the format and times for these conferences is below, and I would like to emphasise the importance of these interviews as a valuable opportunity for discussing student progress and setting learning and personal goals for the coming terms. A change for 2019 is that the Year 3 interviews will be two-way rather than three-way interviews. This change is to allow for a more in-depth interview between the teacher and parents to assist with the transition from early learning to the middle primary. This year the interviews will be booked using PTO, the online booking system.

Two and Three-Way ConferencesMeetings involving two-way (PP-3) and three-way conferences (Y4-Y6) will be held in Week 9 and Week 10ofTerm1from3:25pm.AppointmentsarebookedthroughPTO,viatheSchool’swebsite.Appointmentsspanfifteenofatwenty-minutetimeslotandinstructionsonhowtousethesystemhavebeenemailedout.

Dear Parents National Day of Action against Bullying and ViolenceLast Friday, along with over 2000 other schools around the Nation, Frederick Irwin Anglican School participated in the National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence. As I discussed with the students at assemblies and services last week, thiswasagreatopportunityforstudentstoreflectandlook at what they can do to make Australia a more caring and respectful place. I challenged the Years 3 to 6 students to take away one message with them from the day. That might have been something they could improve upon when interacting with others or something they could do a little differently if witnessing children being mean to others.

As I entered classrooms on Friday, it was great to see students across the School participating in a variety of different discussions and activities related to this National Day of Action. Perhaps over this weekend, you can have a chat with your children to see what their ‘take away message’ was from this special day. Thank you to all the teachers across the Primary School for their support of this important day.

Student AgencyOneofthegreatbenefitsoftheWalkerLearningApproachisthestudentagencythatourchildren exhibit across the school day. As part of our pedagogy, students are always encouraged to have a voice and to develop life skills such as choice, independence and responsibility. This can often be seen in simple things such as choosing which seat to sit in to start the school day, or choosing an Education Research Project topic or Investigation learning space to visit.

One example of agency we have seen of late has been our students putting together proposal forms for the running of lunchtime clubs. Students as young as Year 3 have been putting together information to present to Mrs Skehan and me in the hope of being able to run a lunchtime club. While it has not been possible to accept everyone’s ideas, we have praised the students for the confidenceandinitiativetheyhaveshowninwantingtoleadaclub.Theskillstheyhavebeenapplying for their proposals will certainly hold them in good stead for the rest of their schooling years and beyond.

Uniform Thank you to parents and families for your continued support of our uniform policy, in ensuring that we continue to maintain high standards of presentation. The end of term is fast approaching, but we are continuing to remain vigilant with uniform expectations, particularly in regards to fringe length.

Upcoming Services We have some important services coming up in our Primary School calendar. All parents and families are welcome to attend the Easter Service on Wednesday 10 April in the gymnasium. This will be for Pre-Primary to Year 6 students and will commence at 9.45am, led by Father Noel. Our Primary School ANZAC Service, again for Pre-Primary to Year 6 students, will commence at 11.50am on Friday 3 May in the Undercover Area. This was a very special occasion last year, and we are again looking forward to acknowledging this special day with a formal gathering. Parents and family members will be most welcome to attend.

Dear Parents and Caregivers

Student Leaders We have announced the 2019 House Captains to the students and I’m looking forward to working with these student leaders. This year all House Captains were Year 6 students, but I wanted to take this opportunity to recognise the courage and maturity that our Year 5 student candidates displayed. Having the courage to go through the election process is in itself an achievement and I thank these students for their efforts. The feedback I had from teachers was that all participating students displayed an

immense amount of maturity while delivering their speeches. I would like to congratulate Joshua Deere (Arnold House), Kiara Terblanche (Barrett House), Jayden Baumgartner (Ellis House), Precious Canlom (Gordon House), Keely Eversden (Jamieson House) and Tess Buckland (Rose House). The newly elected House Captains will be involved in a formal commissioning service on Friday 29 March in the Hall. I know that this will be a very special occasion for the students and school.

Swimming CarnivalOn Thursday 14 March, we held our swimming carnival. It was a fantastic atmosphere and I’m proud of our students, as their sportsmanship and comradery were very evident. Throughout the day we had special individual achievements but also House achievements. I observed students supporting each other and enjoying the event. I would like to thank all of parents who were able to assist on the day, as well the parents who were able to attend the event. I thank the teachers and Mrs Shepherd for all of her organisation and dedication. I found the carnival to be very successful and know that we will continue this positive atmosphere at our future carnivals and events.

Parent/Teacher ConferencesIn Week 9, teachers will be conducting parent / teacher conferences. All parents have been sent correspondence with instructions on how to log into our online PTO system to book times. At Frederick Irwin, we prioritise communication, and I hope that these meetings will be valuable toourparentsindiscussingyourchildren’sdevelopment.Ifyouareunabletofindanavailabletime this week to meet with the teacher, please communicate this with the teacher and accommodations can be planned. If you are having any issues with the PTO system, please contactHelenJonesintheofficeforassistance.

ParkingDuring the teacher information sessions at the beginning of term, I spoke to all parents about my understanding of the parking congestion in the Parent Car Park. I informed parents that I was aware of the situation and that the leadership team was exploring solutions. This discussion continues as we forward plan solutions for our growing population. In the meantime, I would like to ask that everyone show patience and caution when entering and exiting the car park. The afternoons are particularly busy and extra vigilence is required. I thank you for your support.

REVISION & EXAM PREPARATION PROGRAM

APR I L 2019

April Revision ProgramTHIS PROGRAM INCLUDES:

Study Skills: This program contains four hours of teaching broken up into one hour a day for the four days. It focuses on units such as exam techniques, stress management, goal setting and time management.

Essay Writing: The essay writing program consists of four hours of teaching broken up into one hour a day for the four days. It re-teaches students the structure of a critical essay and reinforces the importance of constructing a sound thesis and topic sentences, and revises how to include evidence to justify these claims.

Subject Revision: These classes consist of eight hours of teaching broken up into two hours a day for the four days. The program consists of re-teaching and revision, and is designed to reveal to students how the work they have learnt in term 1 will be assessed in first semester exams.

Exam Preparation

The classes focus on specific topic revision followed by a discussion on how this material is assessed in exam style questions.

There is sufficient time within the eight hours for teachers to model how to answer exam questions successfully as well as time for students to independently practice constructing their own answers. All our senior school teachers have significant marking experience and know what needs to be addressed to ensure students success in exams.

SENIOR AND MIDDLE SCHOOL

F.A.QHow can students be assured that what they have learnt at school will be addressed in the ATARget Program? The answer to this important question is really quite simple.

9 The foundation of our revision classes is the Western Australian curriculum which is the same syllabus guidelines used by the school.

9 ATARget keep their classes small which allows students access to more one-on-one time with their teacher.

9 We also send out a questionnaire to all families participating in the program before the classes begin, to find out exactly what topics and texts students have been studying, and this information is forwarded to the ATARget teachers for inclusion in their programs.

9 This questionnaire also asks families to alert us of any specific weaknesses in the student’s knowledge that may have been identified by the school or the student so that specific area can be re-taught by the ATARget teacher.
