The topic for this examination is:
Just do it! Speak out! Break the mould!
It is more than 30 years since Nike first launched their "Just do it!" campaign that
encouraged young people to use their voice and play their sport. The Nike anniversary
campaign in 2018 challenges people, especially young people, to reach for their dream,
break the mould and never give up. Over the past three decades, “Just do it!" has moved
well beyond being a slogan for Nike and has become a common saying.
The texts in this preparation material provide you with many examples of how people are
just doing it, breaking the mould and speaking out about causes they feel strongly about.
We encourage you to delve further into the issues that interest you by using the links
provided and other relevant sources. The texts also aim to make you think about how you
can "just do it". You can make your working environment and the world a better place, and
the time to start is now!
While you are working with the preparation material you should consider how the texts
relate to what you have worked with during your English course. Remember to note down
your sources so that you can cite them in your texts for the examination.
Break the mould!
If you say that someone “breaks the mould”, you mean that they do things differently
from the way things are usually done. It can be also used to refer to someone who
challenges expectations and traditions.
Just do it!
To “just do it” is to step out of your comfort zone and willingly and without hesitation
take on a challenge. It may also mean to reach for your dreams and not give up.
Speak out!
“Speaking out” means sharing your opinion about an issue or idea, especially regarding
something that you feel strongly about.

This poem was performed at an open mic session by the fictional character, Reggie Green
in the Netflix series Dear White People. In a previous episode Reggie had been held at
gunpoint by campus security following an argument with a white friend at a campus party.
We hold these truths to be self-evident
that all men are created equal
that they are endowed by their creator
with certain inalienable rights
Among these life, liberty and
the pursuit of happiness
unless you're loud and black
and possess an opinion
then all you get is a bullet
A bullet that held me at bay
A bullet that can puncture my skin
take all my dreams away

the words I speak to my mother
just because I'm

I Chose To Look The Other Way
I could have saved a life that day,
But I chose to look the other way.
It wasn’t that I didn’t care;
I had the time, and I was there.
But I didn’t want to seem a fool,
Or argue over a safety rule.
I knew he’d done the job before;
If I spoke up he might get sore.
The chances didn’t seem that bad;
I’d done the same, he knew I had.
So I shook my head and walked by;
He knew the risks as well as I.
He took the chance, I closed an eye;
And with that act, I let him die.
I could have saved a life that day,
But I chose to look the other way.
Now every time I see his wife,
I know I should have saved his life.
That guilt is something I must bear;
But isn’t’ something you need to share.
If you see a risk that others take
That puts their health or life at stake,
The question asked or thing you say;
Could help them live another day.
If you see a risk and walk away,
Then hope you never have to say,
“I could have saved a life that day,
But I chose to look the other way.”

Letter of Recommendation for Nabila Jones
To Whom It May Concern:
Nabila Jones completed her work placement at North Shore Nursing Home in the autumn
of 2018. She worked at the home each Wednesday for a 16-week period and has been
an asset for us at North Shore during these weeks.
Nabila has worked alongside staff performing a variety of duties including simple food
preparation and aiding residents as they dress and are groomed. Although Nabila has
been on work placement, and as such has been in a learning situation, she has shown
great initiative and a desire to help both colleagues and residents. We often have
situations in which workers need to cooperate to support a patient. Nabila has
documented her work with the patient, communicated effectively with colleagues and
been a valuable team player.
When she applied to work here Nabila told us that she believes when you see something
that needs to be done you should “just do it”. She has lived up to this principle every day
as she has completed tasks without being asked to and often taken on tasks that we do
not expect of our work placement students.
The residents of North Shore have become familiar and comfortable with Nabila’s kind
assistance. She has developed a lovely manner with residents and includes details from
earlier conversations when she speaks with them showing that she is an attentive
listener and caring companion. She is friendly, interested and courteous when working
with others.
I recommend Nabila most highly to prospective employers and future work placements
and can be contacted to confirm the details of this letter. We wish Nabila all the best and
hope that she may again join the North Shore team when she has completed her studies.
