Why Standards of Excellence Matter

The Standards of Excellence process is used to help fraternity and sorority chapters at the

University of North Carolina Wilmington meet their national standards. This process will allow

chapters to complete a self-evaluation of the previous year to help the University recognize

those organizations that are achieving excellence while identifying those who may need

additional support.

The Standards of Excellence process centers on the Four Pillars of Fraternity and Sorority Life

which are Scholarship, Leadership, Service & Philanthropy, and Brotherhood/Sisterhood.

Exceeding in the area of Scholarship Academic excellence is the highest priority at UNCW. It is important that each chapter

encourages and supports each member’s academic goals. A strong scholarship program within

organizations helps to improve the status of each chapter and the fraternity/sorority system.

Chapters are encouraged to:

Meet the UNCW all-male or all-female average GPA and strive to significantly exceed

those markers

Maintain and implement a scholarship program for their members

Utilize faculty/staff advisor to assist in scholarship programming

Utilize and recommend to their members the use of various UNCW academic support

resources (University Learning Center, Writing Center, Math Lab, Supplemental

Instruction, etc.)

Exceeding in the area of Leadership Being part of a fraternity or sorority provides one of the greatest opportunities for building of

leadership skills for all of its members. A strong positive image of the fraternity and sorority

system can only come from a group of strong leaders.

Chapters are encouraged to:

Challenge every member to participate in student engagement experiences outside of

the chapter (i.e. other extracurricular activities)

Plan and implement an officer transition program

Attend leadership programs sponsored by the Office of Student Leadership and

Engagement, UNCW, national organizations, and/or by national governing bodies

Support the leadership of and participate fully in IFC, NPHC, PHC and UGC

Exceeding in the area of Service & Philanthropy Being a part of the fraternity and sorority system allows members to participate in community

engagement through service and philanthropy activities that not only benefit the members of

the community, but chapter members as well.

Chapters are encouraged to:

Participate in community service projects throughout the year

Participate in philanthropic events to raise money for charitable causes

Support other service and philanthropy events sponsored by other fraternities and

sororities, student organizations, campus partners, and community agencies

Exceeding in the area of Brotherhood/Sisterhood In order for chapters to thrive and grow stronger, they must continually provide experiences

that will enhance the unique feeling of fellowship for all of their members.

Chapters are encouraged to:

Ensure accountability for individual members and the organization as a whole

Participate in social activities with other chapters

Display pride and live values with regard to the fraternity and sorority community

Standards of Excellence Sections The Standards of Excellence will be used to determine the recipient of the Vice Chancellor’s

Cup of Academic Excellence (highest scholarship section for each council). Should there be a

tie, all bonus points will be redacted and the group with the highest score will receive the

award. Should there still be a tie; the organization with the highest increase in their chapter

GPA from spring 2019 to fall 2019 will receive the award.

The Bradley Cup (Chapter of the Year) will also be determined by the Standards of Excellence

(entire score). If a tie should ensue, all bonus points will be redacted and the group with the

highest score will be the recipient. If this does not break the tie, the organization with the

highest Brotherhood/Sisterhood section score will be the recipient.

The Standards of Excellence process has an overall point total of one hundred (100) points with

a maximum of twenty-five (25) possible points for each section, which include Scholarship,

Leadership, Service & Philanthropy, and Brotherhood/Sisterhood. Each chapter must achieve at

least sixty (60) points to meet the standard of excellence overall and a minimum of 20 points to

be meet the standard of excellence in each section; the breakdown is as follows:

Submission for Standards of Excellence Chapters must sign up for a brief 15 - 20 minute presentation. The presentation should highlight

each of the sections, Scholarship, Leadership, Service/Philanthropy & Brotherhood/Sisterhood,

using the requirements as a guide of what to include in your presentation.

To ensure fairness, and make sure every chapter has the same amount of time to prepare,

chapters will be asked to turn in their presentations to the Office of Student Leadership &

Engagement at a to be determined date. The presentation submitted will be the one used during

judging.

Things to keep in mind as you organize your presentation:

The chapter profile: Tell us who you are, the chapter values, what the organization

stands for

We encourage you to make the presentation visual, include pictures from events the

chapter has participated in over the past year

Your presentation should be detailed and organized

Tell your story, what areas has the chapter really improved in; what areas are a work in

progress?

The information should be neat, organized, and easy to view. The final results will be reported

on the UNCW Fraternity and Sorority website.

Please note chapters who were placed on disciplinary probation for any part of the calendar

year 2019 are ineligible for the Vice Chancellor’s Cup of Academic Excellence and the Bradley

Cup.

Chapters who were under a disciplinary probation during 2019 that was placed on them during

the previous calendar year are eligible for the Vice Chancellor’s Cup of Academic Excellence

and the Bradley Cup but will start with an automatic 20 point deduction. The point deduction

will only be factored in to the Bradley Cup and Vice Chancellor’s Cup of Academic Excellence

competition.

All presentations will be reviewed by staff in the Office of Student Leadership & Engagement.

All national headquarters will be advised of the Standards of Excellence process and informed

about the chapter’s standing. We hope that every chapter will meet and far exceed these

Standards of Excellence.
