8PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE:
As much as I enjoy each and every one of our meetings, Monday's bonsai "Inspiration" and Tuesday's workshop with Walter Pall jump started my passion for delivering exceptional bonsai more than I could have anticipated. Every tree received valuable insight and a long term plan for success. He treated each member. and their trees, with respect no matter how many years of experience or how imature the tree may have been. Mr Pall reminded us of the passion of the art and appreciating the beauty of bonsai. Not to focus on the competition of shows, but the power of positive thinking and long term planning.
Michael Corbeille / President [email protected] 248 250 3602
We were honored to have a living legend of bonsai, Walter Pall, conducting his "bonsai inspiration" and an all-day workshop with our club. His Monday presentation was an action packed 3 hours of insight and direction on over 30 club member trees. Mr Pall found time to discuss every tree that was brought to the meeting. He shared over 4 decades of bonsai expertise on large show trees to unpotted trees desperately seeking direction. On Tuesday, Walter spent time discussing each trees opportunities and challenged each owner with their ideas and future design ideas. The day was spent designing each tree with Mr Pall's exceptional direction. Club members did the work, wiring, carving, and transforming their trees with breathtaking results.
Mr Pall demanded the artist do the work and design their own tree. He delivered ideas, direction and some hands on help when needed. Those who attended all left inspired and motivated. Also, bring in a few trees to work on and discuss with the club .

Walter Pall - Special Guest ArtistOn Sunday, John is going to dive deep into his history of presenting award winning trees into national bonsai shows across the country. He'll share stories of procuring trees for Ryan Neil and Todd Schlafer, climbing up hills and crawling through swamps to collect massive yamadori Bald Cyprus. If your interested in working on trees with heavy deadwood, you'll want hear John's advice and stories.
John Wall wants us to bring in our best trees for tips and tricks to elevate the presentation of your prize trees. Experienced and beginners should bring one or two trees for advice and refinement techniques.

"Our time with Walter Pall" An insiders perspective from our VP, Lynn Irish. For those club members who missed Walter Pall's workshop, we can only hope and wish that he will return for another workshop. He's a funny guy not odd wise but "ha ha" wise. He had lots of jokes and funny stories to tell while teaching lots of valuable information on styling and more.
He talked on a level that even beginners could understand (and I am a beginner). He seems to talk to the trees and they seem to talk back. (This is something I'm going to try). Walter showed us how to take out of control trees and turn them into bonsai.
He tried to let us use our own imagination on how our trees should look, but when we were stuck, he gave us good, sound guidance. In just a few short hours we were able to take several wild trees and start shaping them into bonsai. He gave us tips on how to grow, how to wire, and most of all - how to style our trees.
It was amazing how he did this and such a fun and joking way. Walter Pall was not the least bit intimidating, he was just fun.
Everyone's trees looked so nice after the workshop. I know I enjoyed the workshop and walked away knowing so much more and especially how to shape my little pads, or "The little poodles" as Walter called them, on my shimpaku.
Introduction to Winterizing - Bonsai EmpireProtecting your Bonsai trees in winter https://www.bonsaiempire.com/tree-species
Like most Bonsai techniques, how you overwinter your trees depends on the region in which you live and the tree species you have. During the autumn, in colder areas, hardy trees start preparing for the coming winter by hardening up new growth and (for deciduous trees- ) dropping leaves to reduce moisture loss. This period of dormancy is important for Bonsai trees, so don’t overprotect them by placing them inside.
(Sub)tropical trees are a different story, these should be placed indoors during the winter if tempera-tures drop below temperatures around 60 °F (15 degrees Celsius) but can remain outside year-round in warm climates. When placed indoors, tropical trees need lots of light and relatively high humidity. Only a spot immediately in front of a south-facing window will provide enough light.
trees in most parts of the world are subjected to temperatures of 15 °F (minus 10 degrees Celsius) and below in winter. Usually their roots are far too deep underground to freeze, and therefore these trees have no trouble coping with freezing temperatures at all. With Bonsai however, being planted in shallow containers, the roots need additional protection in winter.
Keeping your trees in a greenhouse or cold frame during the winter is recommended for those living in cold areas. When such shelter is not available, you can place styrofoam covers around the pots to protect the roots, or plant your Bonsai including pot in your garden, covered with soil until the first branching.
When in dormancy, be careful not to expose your trees to an extended period of high temperatures as this might bring them out of dormancy. Once a tree starts to grow it is very vulnerable to freezing temperatures, buds easily die - which significantly impacts the health of your Bonsai. To keep trees dormant throughout the winter, open up greenhouses when these warm up during sunny winter days.
WHEN OVERWINTERING, KEEP A CLOSE EYE ON YOUR TREES. WATER ONLY WHEN THE SOIL DRIES OUT; THE TREES DON’T NEED MUCH WATER WHEN IN DORMANCY SO BE CAREFUL NOT TO WATER TOO OFTEN. ALSO CHECK YOUR TREES FOR INSECTS AND INFECTIONS REGULARLY. DURING THE SPRING YOU CAN PLACE YOUR TREES OUTSIDE AGAIN, BUT BE ALERT TO PROTECT NEW GROWTH AGAINST LATE FROSTS.
