The Journey so far…It all began with a simple yet ambitious idea.

Create a super-efficient, centrally located, state of the art, purposebuilt and highly environmentally friendly and pollutant free palletisedfreight distribution hub that would set a new benchmark in the logistics industry. Today, the Pall-Ex depot fleet numbers approximately 7500 vehicles. Every 24 hours, our 42 bay hub, centrally located near junction 22 of the M1 motorway, is host to approximately 300 inbound/outbound visits and we’re used to managing up to 17,000 pallets daily. This remains the only “non drive-through” hub in the sector.

Pall-Ex in the CommunityHilary Devey, our multi award winning founder and CEO, has always believed passionately in Corporate Social Responsibility. Protecting the environment, supporting worthy causes and helping with local community projects are therefore all at the heart of the values we hold up as important at Pall-Ex.

Much of her time is dedicated to charitable causes and other worthwhile contributions to society, helping to raise funds and awareness of many issues. Some years ago, Pall-Ex launched a “Penny-a-Pallet” scheme that resulted in regular, reliable funding to Transaid, which provides much needed transport solutions for developing countries.

Young EnterpriseFor some years, Pall-Ex is proud to have been a patron of the nationwide Young Enterprise organisation, aimed at encouraging business innovation in young people and helping them to better understand the day to day operations of industry and commerce. Pall-Ex has supported the scheme not only with much needed funding, but also, again, in practical terms. Pall-Ex staff often help with “out of school” activities at local schools and colleges, and join competition judging panels.

The Princess RoyalTrust for CarersThe Penny-a-Pallet scheme (of which Hilary is a trustee and patron) helps a number of charities, including The Princess Royal Trust for Carers.

The contributions made by Pall-Ex and our members help the trust to fund its 133 independently-managed Carers’ Centres, which look after more than 310,000 carers throughout the length and breadth of the United Kingdom. Amazingly, some 15,000 of these are children, with an average age of just 12.

Support offered by the trust consists of support groups at centres, respite day care clubs, training in cookery, managing finances, etc, home visits, funding for essential items such as washing machines. Pall-Ex staff and network members are encouraged to support our chosen charitable causes, by holding fund raising events and offering practical support, such as befriending carers.

Since 1996, the name Pall-Ex has lead the way in the UK palletised road haulage network and is now one of the most recognised networks on our motorway system today.

By listening to and working with the 100+ network members and their customers, Pall-Ex has identified a number of innovative ways to respond to the challenges that face members and their customers alike. The extensive IT capabilities at Pall-Ex provide a technology backbone which is a much valued facet of the Pall-Ex/Member partnership.

At the centre of our IT hub sits our core operational application TWINE. This features a host functionality including the ability to produce shipping documentation, consignment “Track & Trace” and POD retrieval.

Using our web based shipping system, you can book jobs directly with your local Pall-Ex member, and produce network compliant documentation to ensure your consignments are visible across the Pall-Ex network. If you require your carrier to capture POD’s using your own company delivery documentation rather than a Pall-Ex produced delivery note, we can comfortably accommodate this, enabling you to retrieve signed POD images (of your paperwork) via the web or for download into your own back office systems.

Integrated Management SystemOur impressive list of accreditations and awards for performance,training and innovation includes the integrated management system.

This system integrates three specific management standards:

Pall-Ex has successfully maintained the ISO9001:2008 for Quality Management system since February 2003. This has provided a structured framework which has allowed us to pass on operational efficiencies to our customers providing the very highest service levels.

What is the “Mark of Quality”?On the 2nd July 2010 Pall-eX became the first and only pallet network to achieve ISO 9001:2008 certification across our network operations. The scope now includes not only the hub operations, but also all Pall-eX members engaged in Pall-eX collection and delivery services.

By working alongside BM TRADA, a leading accrediting body, Pall-eX has created a joint “Mark of Quality”. Once again we have benchmarked our leading position in the industry as the principal innovator and the provider of a quality service. Each Pall-eX member contributes to this collaborative certification and through working together it differentiates our network from the rest.

Pall-eX reQuireMentsMembers must work to Pall-eX’s stringent requirements and standards; participate in regular internal and external audits; action all NCR’s and observations raised by Pall-eX and continually improve performance.

hoW do i get involved and contribute?As a Pall-eX member, you are already involved and you are part of our network certification! In order to maintain this status and use the logo you need to comply with all Pall-eX terms and conditions and participate in regular and scheduled audits. Every year Network Development will be auditing each of the members, making sure that all Pall-eX standards and requirements are met and overall performance is improving. In addition at times you may be visited by BM TRADA in order to confirm your compliance with Pall-eX obligations, this visit will be always agreed with you in advance. The key is to ensure that you are working to Pall-eX systems for handling collections and deliveries.

What Will it Mean to My dePot?You can display our “Mark of Quality” network certificate at your premises,your customers will be able to see that you belong to the only ISO 9001:2008 certificated network, helping you to gain new opportunities.

hoW do i use the logo?

The “Mark of Quality” logo must be earnt. Appropriate guidelines have been prepared and shared with the Network Development team.

Your Regional Network Development Manager will be in contact shortly to assess your suitability in displaying the “Mark of Quality” logo on your C&D cabs. In order to ensure your suitability, you need to ensure that your cabs are livered up appropriately, the vehicles are in good and clean condition. In addition to this, you will be able to use the “Mark of Quality” logo on marketing collateral to sell the Pall-eX network service to your customers.

What if i have My oWn certification?

The “Mark of Quality” can be used to complement your own certification. It applies specifically to the relationship between you and us, and holds value when you are speaking to your customers about sending their freight through our network, showing the customer that other members of the network responsible for their freight also operate to the same level of quality service. The “Mark of Quality” aims to add value to each of our members giving them added ability to sell the network solution to their customers.

Network certification has been provided to demonstrate our collaborative strength all the way from making Pall-eX collections, freight travelling through the hub to goods being delivered to the final customer.

What if i don’t coMPly?

In the event that a non-conformance is raised you will be asked to undertake an agreed corrective action within an agreed timeframe. The Network Development team will facilitate this; should it be necessary. Once the corrective action has been completed to an acceptable standard you will continue to operate under the scheme.

Further failure to comply with this new PALL-EX standard will result in thorough investigation and possibly termination from the network.

Mark of Quality


Environmental

At the heart of our organisation is our unique transhipment hub - the only non drive-through hub in the palletised haulage sector.

The £12m hub was built in 1996 and was opened by HRH The Princess Royal. Our architects and contractors were told to

place great importance on maximising the environmentally friendly characteristics of the building while minimising any negative effect on local flora and fauna.

The specially levelled hub floor ensures that fragile goods don’t suffer from vibration during transhipment. Built on a brown field site, the development of the Pall-Ex hub regenerated an extensive area of land.

We planted scores of trees, reclaimed two natural ponds and specified special landscaping to control both noise and light pollution.

The purpose-built hub enabled us to design an efficient loading system with no commercial vehicle entering the building. Our fork lift trucks are powered by environmentally friendly compressed natural gas, reducing polluting emissions to an absolute minimum. Environmentally sensitive goods, such as foodstuffs also benefit greatly from the cleaner environment.

The Pall-Ex hub provides outstanding evidence of our environmental focus and sets a new bold industry benchmark for environmental construction and design excellence.
