The program was conducted through the Sunday school classes of St. James Episcopal , South Haven Presb y ternan , Bellport Methodist , Christ Episcopal Churches and the Unitarian Fellowship. Community volunteers and the students at the Bay Community School in Brookhaven also helped. Mrs. J. Chester of East Pa t- ehogue , chief bingo inspector of Brookhaven Town and a Republica n committeeman, was rejected by the Suffol k County Legislature as the new com- missioner of the Department of Parks and Recreation last Thursday. A number M persons representing ^state and local parks groups urged the Legislature to a ppoint a professional parks man to the position. After a caucus that took place in a back room , Legislator H. Beecher Halsey of Westbampton Beach moved to have Mr. Chester appointed. But the move was defeated , with only three legislators from outside Brookhaven voting with thw tow n 's group, They were Legislators Syd Askoff , Babylon ; Joseph Caputo, Islip Terrace , and R, Thomas Strong, East Hampton . A health physics associate at the Brookhaven National Laboratory, Mr. Chester , 45, would have succeeded Charles R. Dominy, who recently retired from the $29,770-a-yea r position. Local Girt Scouts Help Mmy Families The American Red Cross contacted Girl Scout Service Unit No. 3 and requested them to assist several needy families in the a rea for Christmas. All the troops in the Brownies, Junior , Cadette and Senior Girl Scouts were contacted in Unit No. 3, taking in East Patehogue , Bellport and Brookhaven . Under (he leadership of Mrs , Pat Wallace , troop leader from Junior Girl Scout troop 137? in East Patehogue , many canned goods , turkeys and gift items were collected. The many items, not only came from the various* troops but donations were given from many stores in the area The Scouts would like to thank Mrs. Pat Wallace for formulating this project and to the many scouts , residents and store owners who helped brighten Christmas for these needy families. Bell port He was 51 Mr Gould , who formerly served with Brookhaven National La boratory, was a retired electrical engineer He was also on the staff at the State L' niverssty of New York at Stony Brook and was an Army veteran of World War II. An active member of Playcrafters. a llocal drama group, he starred in the recent pr oduction of "Fiorello " His wife , Eleanore, is the secretary of Playcrafters Mr Gould was a longtime supporter of the group and served on many productions He served on the school board from 1S67-70 and was * .he president during his last year ;n office He is survived by his wife .
