CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGEDear Residents,

As you know Limbang, Yew Tee, Marsiling and Woodgrove divisions have come together to form the new Marsiling-Yew Tee GRC. This gives us a new opportunity to forge a better home for everyone. My colleagues, Lawrence Wong, Halimah Yacob, Ong Teng Koon and myself are thankful to all of you for the privilege to serve you. We look forward to work together with you under the new Marsiling-Yew Tee Town Council to realise this goal – Our Better Home.

The new Town Council will ensure a seamless transition for residents to access basic services including Service and Conservancy Charges (S&CC) payment and booking of common facilities.

For your ease of reference, we have appended a map showing the boundaries of the GRC and the four divisions with details of when and where your Member of Parliament will be holding their Meet-the-People sessions.

In this inaugural issue of the Town Council’s newsletter, we wish to celebrate with residents exciting news on the launch of the Rail Corridor. At the same time, we also reminisce in the heritage of our kampong as we get to know our new GRC better.

On 28th November, we celebrated our first GRC Family Day and launched our Town Council Facebook page. We look forward to many more bonding time together as a community and you can certainly keep in touch on the happenings about town online.

THE RAIL CORRIDOR INSPIRING EXTRAORDINARY COMMUNITY SPACE FOR ALL —

arsiling-Yew Tee town residents can now expect new exciting proposals for the community right in the heart of the GRC as part of the winning proposals unveiled for the Rail Corridor.

The former Keretapi Tanah Melayu Railway line which ran through our town, will be converted into a linear green communal space. It connects different neighbourhoods and links up communities along the 24 km stretch of Rail Corridor.

While the rustic feel of the yesteryears lingers along the former railway tracks, newly-formed shared experiences can be found through outdoor water sports activities like kayaking, cycling or experiential learning like camping in the inclusive, common space which is nature’s best gift for us.

Integrating the water bodies and greenery of the Canal Front and Northern Creek in Marsiling-Yew Tee GRC, our town joins others in forming the urban green-blue tapestry of an ecologically vibrant community.

These plans are not finalised, and Ministry of National Development and Urban Redevelopment Authority will continue to engage the community on how the Rail Corridor will shape up through roving community exhibitions on the Rail Corridor next year. The proposals will then be refined with comments and feedback received from the community.

Stitching the Line to the Strait

The Water Plaza welcomes people from all walks of life, with a view of enhanced aquatic plants on both sides of Mandai River.

The open space on the opposite side of Kranji MRT station is highly accessible via MRT, bus and Gate Bridge. Directly connected to the station, it is a starting point to take a tour around the Northern part of the Rail Corridor, by walking, cycling or kayaking. At the Northern end of the Corridor, an access park will be the entry point to the Corridor for residents and the working community in Woodlands Town.

With an area of 2.3 hectares (ha), Kranji will be a starting point to explore the Northern part of the Rail Corridor. Gate Bridge functions as a large-sized platform.

In addition to cafés and restaurants, a bicycle station and rental cycle service, a boat station will provide a base for water activities such as kayaking and fishing. Gate Bridge also serves as a fishing. Gate Bridge also serves as a link to several transportation modes. A pedestrian bridge connecting to the MRT station and a bus stop will be integrated into Gate Bridge to provide shelter for people waiting for buses. A bridge also connects the site to the opposite side of the Mandai River.

The Canal Front stretches along the Pang Sua Canal, which has been adapted to include a natural edge, adding a wetland ecosystem to this grassland area. A large residential community lives within the Rail Corridor along this stretch of Canal Front, actively involved in urban agriculture and all stages of the food cycle. A vibrant space ideal for cultivating community relationships, it is well connected to the surrounding residential areas.

There is a plan to widen the drainage reserve on the Sungei Pang Sua Canal from Kranji Expressway to Sungei Kadut Avenue Road.

This widening provides an opportunity to regenerate the river edges to be as natural as possible, promoting the growth of aquatic plants on both sides of the river, which will result in improved water quality and abundant recreational space along the canal. The canal on the east serves as an industrial catchment and outfalls to the sea while the Pang Sua Canal on the west enters Kranji Reservoir. The strategy here shares many elements with the Choa Chu Kang node, integrating water into the space. The strategy not only cleans and attenuates the flow into the Pang Sua Canal but also helps irrigation of Farmer’s Hill where excavated soil will be transferred to create several mounds.

Stagmont Ring is a new front yard for the surrounding communities providing a variety of outdoor programmes and waterfront activities for friends and families to enjoy. Residents can expect this community hub to be filled with planned neighbourhood amenities like community farms, playgrounds, BBQ lawns, and fishing ponds. Two new pedestrian bridges further enhance the connection to the nearby Choa Chu Kang (CCK) town. Closely tied to the concept of blue-green integration at CCK, Stagmont Ring will function as a cleansing machine improving the quality of water along its total length facing the Pang Sua Canal. The Canal Village symbolises active, playful, and ecological interaction between people and nature.ecological interaction between people and nature.

Two new pedestrian bridges will connect the recreational area of The Canal Village to surrounding precincts. This physical closeness will enable residents to walk or cycle easily to The Canal Village to meet other community members, enjoy the varied amenities or stroll along the waterfront.

Exciting developments are coming your way! By 2017, a new retail and food complex will be built next to Block 176 Woodlands Street 13. It will include 80 cooked food stalls, 60 retail shops, five commercial schools, a supermarket and some 200 parking spaces. To pre-empt congestion, Woodlands Street will be widened and a new slip road will be added from the street to Woodlands Avenue 3.

The residential landscape will also be transformed. From Block 1A to Block 6A Woodlands Centre Road were selected for the selective en bloc redevelopment scheme in 2012. HDB has built about 190 units of new two-room, three-room, four-room and five-room flats at Woodlands Drive 70 to rehouse the affected residents.
