Back to the BasicsCurrent and recent trends have taken clothing to new extremes. Fashions have been detailed, complex, and elaborate. Bold, bright eye-grabbing prints, layer upon layer, and ornamental gar-nishments are fun, but make the eye weary and can be hard to wear. This trend will eventually fade and make way for the opposite style - simplicity. While not quite as fundamental as the minimalism of the past, it is a return to basic shapes and softer colors. Simple shapes will dominate the scene - basic tees, capris, shorts, and other pieces. No intricate details, no over-the-top embellishment, only simple shapes in muted colors. The focus is on the quality, construction, shape, and color of the clothes. Each piece will be a solid color. It will draw from this year’s colorblocking trend, but with more muted colors.

Back to the BasicsCurrent ManifestationsCalvin KleinThakoonDiane Von FurstenbergMinimalism has left the radar of current trends, and designers are beginning to add some complexity to their pieces again. However, designers that did not fol-low minimalism have pieces that are over adorned. The minimalists turn their look up a notch, and the over-the-toppers will turn the volume down, meeting somewhere in the middle.

Formally LayeredSheers, lace, and other lightweight fabrics are popular his year. Most designer are using transpar-ent fabric to add a touch of sensuality. For Fall 2013, layering will be popular due to the climate change, and the next logical step in using these fabrics is to layer them. By layering sheers and laces, one can give an illusion of opacity while still showing off the layers beneath. The layers will make the outfits opaque in the right places so that the outfit retains it’s regality. In the media lately, we’ve seen women in early 20th century clothing; for example, Titanic 3-D and Downton Abbey. Not only dresses will be in, but separates as well that give the same silhouette and have the same formal feeling.

Formally LayeredCurrent ManifestationsMost designers are currently using sheers and lace; also seen on the street. Fall will be warm enough with the cli-mate to wear sheers and clothing will be lighter, but it will begin cooling off and when the weather fluctuates, layers are the most practical thing. Sheers and lace will layer well because you will still be able to see the underlying layers. No one is currently using this exact trend, but it is the next logical step for these fabrics. Some designers using sheers include Tori Burch and Christian Siriano.

DriversClimate change is a huge factor in fashion trends. What a person wears is affected by the weather. Fall 2013 is most likely be warmer than falls of the past, but it will still be fall and the temperature will still be dropping. The most practical thing to do when this happened is to wear layers. When a person layers an outfit, they can remove or add pieces depending on the weather without disrupting the entire outfit. The media has also been displaying women in clothing of an earlier time. For example, Titanic was re-released recently and the show Downton Abbey has gained popularity. The women in the shows wear expensive, regal gowns. Seeing them in the media will begin to revive the style.

District UprisingThis trend spawns from the recent obsession with The Hunger Games. The Districts are very poor, and there is much political unrest. The Capitol has many methods to subdue the Districts, but sooner or later it will not be enough and the Districts will revolt. This style is very dark and drab. The fabrics are thick and rough and accented with lots of leather. The overall look has military un-dertones. The color palette consist of neutrals in a darker hue.

District UprisingCurrent ManifestationsVictoria BeckhamMaxMaraThe Hunger Games is a huge phenomenon and people love it. The fashions from the movies have undoubtedly affected street style.

DriversThe Hunger Games movies were a huge hit a the box office and the books are flying off the shelves. People can relate to the main character, Katniss, whether it is financially, emotionally, or on a family level. Poverty and unemployment are rampant, and Katniss give them hope. The are also many people that can relate because both are unhappy with the government. Our government is becoming more and more corrupt, and their government has never been pure. Our revolt will not quite be so extreme as the Hunger Games, but by wearing this trend, people can showcase their unrest and remind the government that they can be over-thrown.
