Ford Manufactures 5-millionth Vehicle with EcoBoost EngineThe Ford factory in Wayne, MI, has just completed the assembly of the 5-millionth vehicle to be built with an EcoBoost engine. It happened to be a Ford Focus and a 1.0-liter EcoBoost V-4, but there are many other varieties of this now-common Ford engine. Some of the other varieties of EcoBoost include: 1.5, 1.6, 2.0 and 2.3-liter V-4s; and 2.7 and 3.5-liter V-6s. The V-6s are used in the heavy-hauling Ford F-150 truck, while the V-4s are found in various car models. In fact, 2015 is the first year ever that the EcoBoost will be an available option for every Ford passenger vehicle sold in the United States. The name "EcoBoost" is derived from "eco-friendly" and "turbo-boost." The designation is meant to convey the fact that this engine drastically reduces greenhouse gas emissions even while significantly boosting fuel efficiency. Small-to-medium-sized passenger vehicles fitted out with an EcoBoost engine get as much as a 30 percent increase in gas mileage. They also see about a 15 percent reduction in carbon emissions. The greatest thing about this already great combination, however, is that the EcoBoost costs thousands of dollars less than similar hybrid and diesel engines.Another factor that makes EcoBoost stand out proudly among its competition is that this small, fuel-efficient engine cranks out nearly as much power as many larger, less-efficient engines. It is a turbo-charged, direct fuel-injection engine that produces an incredible amount of torque and horsepower for its unimposing size. One of the most popular models using the EcoBoost is the Ford Focus. The 2014 Focus, if one takes the 1.0-liter V-4 option, gets 42 mpg on the open highway. With gas prices always an uncertainty, this is a big draw. Another option for the Focus is the 2.0-liter engine, which will give you 252 horsepower and 32 mpg. The Ford Escape utility vehicle, the F-150 truck and the Ford Fusion midsize car are among the other popular models that often use an EcoBoost engine. The F-150 is notable in that it uses a V-6 EcoBoost and can haul up to 12,000 pounds of trailer weight and up to 3,000 pounds in its bed.Besides winning international awards for environmental concern and innovative technology, the EcoBoost has given new life to Ford Motors as a profitable corporation. No other auto manufacturer has managed to reap so much economic benefit from a single, turbo-charged engine since the Honda VTEC of the 1990s. By the looks of it, though, Ford will soon surpass even the VTEC in both popularity and profitability. The 62 Ford manufacturing plants spread out across the globe are cranking out 200,000 EcoBoost engines now every single month. That is a huge jump from the mere 14,000 produced in 2009 when EcoBoost was first introduced. It then took just three years before 500,000 EcoBoost engines had been built, and it took but another three years before that number was multiplied by ten. With so much success already under its belt, one might think that Ford would relax and bask in the sun of EcoBoost success. Instead, it is already pressing ahead with its latest EcoBoost model: the 2016 Ford Focus RS. The RS will come out late in 2015, but it has already been on display at the Geneva Motor Show. With a 2.3-liter V-4 EcoBoost engine, this all-wheel drive hatchback promises much in the way of thrill-driving and high durability. It's the latest example of the many worthy vehicles that hide beneath their hoods an EcoBoost engine.Southern California Ford dealers specialize in new and used Ford vehicles, parts and services.
