New Brunswick is one of Canada’s three Maritime provinces, and is the only constitutionallybilingual province ( French and English ) in the federation. The provincial capital is Freder-icton. The population of New Brunswick is almost 750,000; a majority are English–speaking, but there is also a large Francophone minority ( 32% ), chiefly of Acadian origin.

As of fall 2009, the Province of New Brunswick prohibited the sale and use of more than200 over–the–counter lawn care pesticide products, specifically 2,4–D products.

Since the maintenance of specialty turf is the business of golf courses, New Brunswick per-mitted the use of 2,4–D, providing that the products are applied within provisions of an In-tegrated Pest Management program.

There are three principal Environmental–Terror–Organizations operating in New Brunswick :Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment ( C.A.P.E. ), Canadian Cancer Soci-ety, and New Brunswick Lung Association.

On February 18th, 2009, Gideon Forman, fund–raiser for C.A.P.E., said golf coursesgolf coursesgolf coursesgolf courses do notqualify as an « essential » sector for herbicides or pesticides. While acknowledging theeconomic importance of golf courses, he said that it possible to maintain courses throughso–called alternative non–toxic methods. « I think we recognize that golf courses have some special challenges, so they may need some extra time perhaps, but we would like to

see them included in the ban,» he said.

Environmental–Terrorism is being stopped elsewhere in Canada. In January 2010, theGreen Space Industry outlined the list of charges against the Government of Ontario and

Enviro–Maniac–Government–Officials working in the Ministry of the Environment. Addition-ally, individual Enviro–Maniac–Members of known Environmental–Terror–Organizations arealso facing charges of FRAUD under the Criminal Code.

Additionally, Dow AgroSciences has gone ahead with a threatened suit against the federalgovernment under the North American Free Trade Agreement ( N.A.F.T.A. ), seeking a re-peal of Quebec’s prohibition of FEDERALLY LEGAL, SCIENTIFICALLY SAFE, TOTALLY IRRE-PLACEABLE, and ABSOLUTELY INDISPENSABLE conventional pest control products contain-ing 2,4–D, and demanding at least TWO MILLION DOLLARS IN DAMAGES.

[ Enviro–Maniac ] Environment Minister Rick Miles went to WilmotPark in Fredericton on Tuesday to remind homeowners that thesale and use of more than 240 over–the–counter lawn care pesti-cides and the use of all 2,4–D products on residential lawns have been OUTLAWED in New Brunswick. [ Despite the fact these productsare federally legal and scientif ically safe. ]



Professional Lawn Care Companies are permitted

to use pest control products if they have proper

training in Integrated Pest Management

Miles said people need the reminder now because with the arrival of nice spring weather, they’re thinking about their lawns.

According to [ Enviro–Maniac–Minister ] Miles ―

product ban on lawn care pesticides. >>

<< Reducing the reliance on pesticides in the provincewill contribute to a sustainable environment and a self–

sufficient New Brunswick by 2026. >>

Homeowners, however, can still spot–treat weeds using pre–mixed,over–the–counter products, and lawn care companies can use pesti-cides if they have proper training in Integrated Pest Management,and don’t use pesticides over more than fifty per cent of a lawn inone season.

He said [ the neighbouring provinces of ] Prince Edward Island andNova Scotia are considering similar controls.



Miles said the province doesn’t have an enforcement program to goalong with the new restrictions.

He said people who are caught violating the regulations will initially receive warnings and educational information, but fines are possi-

ble for repeat offenders.

Healthy lawns are less susceptible to pest problems and the De-partment of Environment’s website has tips on how to develop a healthy lawn.
