Overview
NBMR allows quick recovery of a server or workstation running Microsoft Windows 2008 R2,
2012, 2012 R2 and 2016 operating systems, in the unfortunate event of a hard disk failure
or human error. Note NBMR supports recovery from EMC NetWorker™ only.
Current limitat ions
5NBMR (Bare Machine Recovery for NetWorker) Readme
Copyright © 2011-2018 Crist ie Software Ltd.
i) It is not possible to run the DR process using down-level client/server versions. For
example it is not possible to recover a backup from NetWorker server version 8.6.x
using a backup created with client version 8.5.x. Note that only the version major/
minor numbers are checked for this. The reverse is supported however. For example
a 8.6.x backup stored on a 8.5.x server is fully supported.
ii) Some of the later EMC NetWorker™ client versions support IPv6 networking. At the
moment NBMR does not. The client backup and Disaster Recovery sequence must
be performed in IPv4 mode.
iii) EFI -> MBR conversions are NOT supported on OS's earlier than Windows 2008 R2.
iv) NBMR does not support Windows 'Core' server systems.
Requirements
i) Either Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1, 2012, 2012 R2 or 2016 is required. Only 64-bit
versions are supported.
ii) Requires Administrator privilege to install and run.
iii) At the time of release the EMC NetWorker™ client versions supported are 8.2.1,
9.0.1, 9.1.1 and 9.2.1. Other versions of the 8.2, 9.0, 9.1 and 9.2 clients may work, but
they have not been specifically tested by Cristie.
iv) At the time of release the EMC NetWorker™ Server versions supported are 8.2.x, 9.0.
x, 9.1.x and 9.2.x.
v) A minimum memory of 2 GB of RAM is required for booting the WinPE5 and
WinPE10 recovery environments.
vi) About 40 MB of free disk space is required to install and up to 56MB to hold the
configuration information. If installed, the CRISP package requires 14MB plus a
further 285MB for the NBMR fileset (required to generate the WinPE5 and WinPE10
recovery environments).
vii) The EMC NetWorker™ client must be installed prior to the installation of NBMR. This
is mandatory.
viii) Upgrades from versions of NBMR earlier and including 6.x.x will need to be re-
licensed. Please contact Cristie Support or use the Cristie Licensing Portal.
Known Issues
i) On the first reboot after DR, on certain OS's, the MSDTC service may fail to start.
However, after the first logon this service will be restarted.
ii) On systems using dynamic disks you may be required to boot a recovered system a
second time to correctly configure the dynamic volumes.
iii) There is no IPv6 address support in the NBMR WinPE5 and WinPE10 DR environments.
iv) From EMC NetWorker™ client version 9.1.1 or later we have observed that support
for the Microsoft FAT and exFAT file systems has been dropped (FAT32 is still
supported). The Cristie WinPE5 and WinPE10 DR environments will still create and
partition any disks using these file systems, but obviously no contents will be
restored.

1.1 8.2.2
New in 8.2.2
i) Now supports EMC NetWorker™ clients/servers in the range version 8.2.1 to 9.2.1
inclusive.
ii) The suite installer now includes the WinPE10 based CRISP fileset for creating
Recovery Environments specifically for Windows 10 and 2016. Note the fileset will
only be installed if the correct version of the Microsoft WADK 10 version 1703
'Creator's Update' is installed on the host.
iii)Added the ability to configure network routing during a DR sequence. Also added
shortcuts for this and general network configuration to the main DR environment
desktop.
iv)32-bit versions of Windows OS's are no longer supported by NBMR.
v) The ability to create a WinPE2 32-bit based DR environment is no longer available.
Please use either WinPE5 or WinPE10 based DR environment for recoveries.
vi)Now supports the Cristie Virtual Appliance (VA) 2.2.
vii)In the DR restore wizard the Volume and Filesystem layout screens now use larger
icons. These are designed to be more distinct to those with poor vision or colour-
blindness.
viii)There is a new option in the DR target disk layout screen called "Disk Information".
This gives more detail regarding the detected disks.
ix) DR now allows a 'Fully Qualified Domain Name' (FQDN) to be used for client and
server when they are in the same subnet.
x) The product is supplied with new versions of CRISP 8.2.3 and CDS 4.7.5.

v) Documentation updated for this release.
Bug Fixes
i) During an upgrade of the Microsoft VC++ 2015 redistributable to the latest update
3 version (as included with NBMR 8.1.x) a reboot is required. This could occur silently
if installation was invoked silently. To avoid this the VC++ 2015 redistributable
update 3 will NOT be installed if ANY earlier version is already present on the system.
If no earlier version is found then the VC++ 2015 redistributable update 3 installation
will proceed. Note a reboot is not required when performing a clean install of the
redistributable.
ii) An upgrade or uninstall sequence of the the earlier 8.1.1 release could crash on
Windows 2008 x64. This has now been fixed.
1.3 8.1
New in 8.1
i) Added support for EMC NetWorker™ versions 8.2.4 and 9.1.0 clients and servers.
ii) Added support for Windows 2016 server.
iii) The suite installer now ensures no other conflicting Cristie BMR products are
installed. If any are found the installer aborts the installation process.
iv) The Microsoft VC++ 2015 redistributable has been changed to the update 3
version.
v) The Microsoft Universal C Run Time (UCRT) KB2999226 update has now been
removed. It is no longer required.
vi) Updated the Intel Pro range of NIC drivers in the WinPE5 DR environment.
vii) Added the Cisco UCS VIC NIC driver as used in the Cisco B200-M4 blade.
viii) The product is supplied with new versions of CRISP 8.1.1 and CDS 4.7.2.
ix) Documentation updated for this release.
Bug Fixes

iii) It is now possible to change the NetWorker client selected for a DR sequence
without having to reboot the recovery environment.
iv) A WinPE2/WinPE5 identifier has now been added to the DR environment desktop.
v) Documentation updated for this release.
Bug Fixes
i) Fixed an issue where the original cluster size of GPT partitions was not preserved on
recovery.
1.5 7.3
New in 7.3
i) Added support for EMC NetWorker™ 9.0.0 clients and servers.
ii) Added a rental licensing option. The End User License has been amended to cover
rental licenses.
iii) Only a single activation code is now required to license the product.
iv) The WinPE5 DR environment now supports booting on both UEFI (64-bit only) and
legacy BIOS's.
v) The WinPE5 DR environment now supports UEFI(GPT) to BIOS(MBR) and BIOS to UEFI
boot conversion on recovery. Note only UEFI 64-bit is supported.
vi) The suite installer now checks for the installed service pack level and disallows
installs on Windows OS's without the required minimum service pack.
vii) The Microsoft C++ 2015 redistributables are now installed by the suite installer. This
allows the pre-requisite to prompt the user for a reboot if required. In earlier versions
the pre-requisite was installed silently sometimes causing a reboot without
prompting the user first.
viii) The Microsoft Universal C Run Time (UCRT) KB2999226 update is now installed on
the host system by the suite installer. This is a dependency of the Microsoft C++ 2015
redistributables above.
ix) All NBMR installers and file components are now digitally signed with a SHA-256
based digital certificate.

vii) The WinPE2 and WinPE4 DR environments now boot up into the locale that the ISO's werecreated in with CRISP. For example if CRISP was installed on a host system set to English UKlocale then the generated ISOs will boot with English UK keyboard and time display format.
viii) Support for EMC NetWorker™ version 7.4.x has been dropped since this version went out ofEMC extended service life in September 2012.
ix) Documentation updated for this release.
Bug Fixes
i) None.
1.13 6.5
New in 6.5
i) NBMR now supports Windows 2012 and Windows 8 when used in conjunction with
the EMC NetWorker™ client version 8.0 SP1 (8.0.1).
ii) Windows 8 and Windows 2012 Storage Spaces (SS's) or Storage Pools (SP's)
recoveries are supported in a 'passive' way. Any SS/SP disk/partitions backed up to
the EMC NetWorker™ server will not be restored during the DR process. The SS's/SP's
must be re-created manually when booted back into Windows and the contents
then recovered manually from the EMC NetWorker™ server.
Note any existing SS's/SP's detected on any of the target disks used during recovery
will not be be disturbed. So if recovering to the original disks the contents will
already be in place and the SS's/SP's will not therefore need to be recreated
manually.
iii) It is now possible to create a WinPE5 and WinPE10 recovery ISO based upon the
EMC NetWorker™ client version 8.0.1 to support Windows 8 and Windows 2012 DRs.
iv) The NBMR Suite installer now disables NBMR installation if no EMC NetWorker™
client is detected during the installation.
v) CRISP has been updated to version 6.5.1. A few minor issues have been fixed. Note
CRISP and the NBMR fileset will no longer install on Windows 8 or Windows 2012
because the Microsoft WinPE5 and WinPE10 WAIK is not supported on those OS's.
i) CRISP allows customer supplied WinPE5 and WinPE10 drivers to be added to the ISO
in addition to the standard Cristie supplied driver set. Also allows customer supplied
Windows OS drivers to be added to the ISO for use with the Dissimilar Hardware
wizard.
vi) Added WinPE5 and WinPE10 driver support for LSI SAS2 and Dell PERC H200 disk
controllers.
vii) Added WinPE5 and WinPE10 driver support for HP NC370, NC371, NC373, NC374,

Bug Fixes
i) None.
1.14 6.4.2
New in 6.4.2
i) NBMR now supports clients and server version 8.0.0.
ii) The NBMR Suite installer now warns the User if no NetWorker client is detected
during the installation.
iii) The suite installer also checks that the user account running the installation has
Administrator privilege. This is fatal and after warning the user will prevent the
installation proceeding any further.
iv) It is now possible to deploy NBMR and manage recoveries in conjunction with
CMC version 3.1.1 or later.
v) CRISP has been updated to version 6.4.3. A few minor issues have been fixed.

NC105i, NC107i, NC150T, NC329a, NC329T, NC329I, NC328T,
NC331FLR, NC331T, NC331i, NC332T, NC330i
viii) Added driver support for the Emulex 10Gb OneConnect range of NICs.
ix) Updated driver support for Intel Gigabit 82580, I350 NICs.
x) Updated driver support for IBM MegaRAID SAS disk controllers.
Bug Fixes
i) In the WinPE2 DR environment the disk scaling code for non-System Dynamic GPT
disks wrongly corrected the MSR minimum size. In some cases this meant that the
restored disk layout would not fit on the target disk if it had the original size. This is
now fixed.
ii) In the WinPE2 DR environment recovering a system that had a non-System MBR
Dynamic disk back on to the original hardware would not let the recovery progress
unless the non-System MBR Dynamic disk was partitioned, as it incorrectly identified
the INI disk and ACT disk as being different. This is now fixed.
iii) When using the Cristie Network Configurator tool in the WinPE2 DR environment to
add a static IP address and then selecting "Apply" an error was produced. This is
now fixed.
iv) When NBMR is installed under the System account the initial configuration is now
created correctly.
13NBMR (Bare Machine Recovery for NetWorker) Readme
Copyright © 2011-2018 Crist ie Software Ltd.
v) An issue whereby the WinPE 2 recovery environment was not finding the correct IDE
driver during dissimilar recovery has been fixed. A new InstallIDE.inf file has now
been provided and will be used automatically by the Dissimilar Hardware Wizard.
vi) When attempting to install NBMR on a native German system via the suite installer
the default install folder is shown as "Program Files" instead of "Programme". This has
been fixed for Windows XP and Windows 2003. By default on Windows Vista and
later "Program Files" exists and this is still shown as the default install folder. "
Programme" is a link to "Program Files" in this case.
vii) A run of the configuration generator program NBMRCfg.exe did not create OFM.
LOG when run from outside the NBMR installation folder. This has now been fixed.
1.15 6.4.1
New in 6.4.1
i) IMPORTANT! Because of recent (May 2012) Microsoft licensing changes, Cristie can
no longer distribute the WinPE based DR environment directly to end users. The
WinPE2 DR environment must now be created by end users using tools provided by
Cristie and Microsoft. Please refer to the documentation provided with the Cristie
ISO Producer (CRISP) product.
ii) One advantage of the above change is that it is now possible for Customers to
add the NetWorker client into the WinPE DR environment when creating the ISO.
Earlier versions required the client to be added at recovery time. The user can build
in any client version from 7.4.5 onwards.
This also makes it possible to build severals ISO's each containing different client
versions. Cristie recommends that the customer uses the same NetWorker client
version in the WinPE DR ISO as used to perform the backup.
iii) NBMR now supports client/servers 7.6.3. Please refer to the Requirements section in
this Readme for exact versions supported.
iv) It is now possible to change the recovered system's Hostname and/or IP address.
v) NBMR now supports unattended DR's. A new Answer File Creator (AFC) tool has
been included to enable the creation of a script file to be used in unattended DR
operations.
vi) The product license agreement has been revised to clarify the use of the product
for system migration or cloning.
vii) The Online Help and manual has been updated for this release.
viii) The new version of the setup program allows the Readme (i.e. this document)
and the Installation Guide to be displayed before installing the program.
ix) Minor enhancements to the WinPE based DR GUI.
x) Added the following new driver support to the WinPE DR environment:
HP NC364m NIC
Broadcom NetLink NIC
LSI 3ware 9750 RAID Controller
14 Bare Machine Recovery for NetWorker
Copyright © 2011-2018 Crist ie Software Ltd.
xi) Added new Win2003/2008 IDE drivers for use with the DHW when recovering to
VMware.
Bug Fixes
i) Selecting Italian for the TimeZone was not indicated with a 'tick' mark.
ii) In some situations a System Reserved partition was left with a permanent drive letterallocated after a DR sequence. This has been fixed.
1.16 6.3.3
New in 6.3.3
i) Now supports encrypted and password protected backups for all supported
versions of NetWorker.
ii) The Cristie Network Configurator tool provided in the WinPE2 DR environment now
displays help when the Help button is clicked.
iii) Increased the timeout of the initial run of NBMRCfg.exe during installation from 10
to 20 minutes.
iv) Added the ability to Select/Deselect all NetWorker savesets found in a backup
during DR.
v) Updated the Cristie Deployment Service (CDS) in the WinPE2 DR environment to
2.2.7.
vi) The NetWorker client must be installed prior to the installation of NBMR. This is now
mandatory.
vii) The VMware LSI_SAS drivers used for injecting into dissimilar systems during DR have
been updated. Separate drivers are now included for Windows 2003 x86/x64 and
Windows 2008 x86/x64.
viii) The NBMR installer dialog now contains a shortcut to the Readme document (i.e.
this document).
ix) Documentation updated for this release.
x) Added IDE Hyper-V drivers to the PE2 DR environment.
xi) The following new WinPE2 drivers have been added:
RealTek OEM NIC driver set.
Emulex/ServerEngine 10Gb NIC drivers.

drivers in the registry during the recovery of a VM. The effect of this was to cause therecovery to fail when in fact this was not the case.
ii) Log file contents are now time-stamped consistently with local time.
iii) Fixed a problem where a change of partition label during DR was not working.
iv) Fixed a problem during DR where a correct client IP address was reported as 'unknown' if itwas initially entered with the wrong value and subsequently corrected.
v) Fixed a problem when attempting to Abort a DR sequence during the file count phase, wherethe DR console would hang.
