Regarding our fabulous show… The 2012 Folsom Quilt Show was a huge success and a very big THANK YOU to everyone who made it possible!!

The quilts and other fiber items were beautiful! They were great examples of how talented our guild really is. Visitors commented on the variety of design, quality of workmanship, and technique.

The show could not happen without our fantastic volunteers and families. Thank you for all of the hours that were donated to the show. Many spouses and kids were called in to help as well; be sure to tell them we appreciate it!!

We will have more numbers next month because the show just ended two days ago, but here’s what we have so far. The total number of paid guests was 1,985, about 50 less than last year. The raffle quilt made more than $3,400. We had 153 boutique items which earned about $3,487 this year, compared with $2,647 last year, which is $853 more. So it looks like we were successful in making money for the guild as well!

The Member’s Choice went to #136, Urban Amish, by Deb Winterling. The Viewer’s Choice went to #107, New York Baltimore, by Dawn Licker. Congratulations, ladies!!

The Raffle Quilt was won by Deborah Miller from Modesto. She was at her guild’s quilt show meeting when I called her. There were screams of excitement. The quilt was delivered to her by Derald’s wife’s cousin who is a guild member in Modesto. Their meeting was the same as ours, the 14th.

Lastly, as we enjoy the memories of this year’s show, don’t forget that next year’s show is less than a year away. Start planning your entries now, it will save the midnight oil next February. Also, step up and volunteer. The show can always use more help and it’s a wonderful way to make new friends! Teamwork!!

We had a great show here!!

Thank you!!

Board Meeting Minutes Tuesday, February 14, 2012

Pam Taylor called the Board meeting to order at 5:55 p.m. in the Activity Room at the Folsom Community Center.

It was moved, seconded and passed that the January Board Meeting Minutes be accepted as printed in the newsletter.

New Business

Discussion of nominations for new board members took place.

Discussion of gift for community center: Ted from the Community Center supplied us with the costs for our use of the center. The guild is charged the resident rate of $25 for one hour every month for the board meetings. The normal rate is $45. We are charged $75 for our workshops. The Community Center has us down for 6 ½ hours. In actuality, we are here 6 hours from 10-4. Sherry will look into the correct hours used and talk to Ted. We need to give the gift soon so we can get the quilt show closed. Ted negotiates with President or President-Elect and asks for specific items as a gift. Denise Sansone shared what the figures and gifts from prior years’ donations were: Adirondack tables and hanging microphones. This year choices are to replace the workshop room carpet, pay for a new ice machine, buy a new projector to play movies/DVDs, or update the partitions in restrooms.

Replacing the ice machine is the Quilt Show Chair’s vote because of sanitary concerns and having to carry the buckets of ice. Ice machine was voted unanimously by board as a gift to the community center.

Committee Reports

Eileen Crawford, President-Elect: Next year the Board meetings will not be before the general membership meetings on Tuesday. She passed around a calendar to mark days that do not work. This is for board members who will continue next year or are nominated for a new position.

Eileen has a current list of nominations for the 2012-13 officers: President-Elect Becky Zsoka, Quilt Show Chair Elect Anne Ross, Treasurer Sharon Pierce, and Treasurer Elect Sherry Hammer.

Sharon Pierce, Treasurer Report: Denise complimented Sharon on her hard work for getting the numbers tallied from the quilt show so soon. Monthly budget report was distributed. We are getting low on the number for workshops and it was discussed that the budget will have to be augmented by next board meeting. Eileen recommended raffle quilt 2012 and President expense can augment the workshop budget figure.

Sherry Hammer, Quilt Show Chair: Amazing, thank you thank you thank you. Nothing but glowing comments, variety of quilts, guild members were kind and friendly. Loved Karen’s Catering. Biggest complaint was parking. Attendance 30 under Friday, Saturday was 30 above, Sunday 50 under. Total of 1,985 attendees received at door. The total attending in 2011 was 2048. Boutique was record setting – $3,479; for 2011 we received $2647. There were 77 baskets brought to the show then some were added. Total of 153 items. Quality of the items for the baskets was a bit higher than last year. Membership was extremely generous in donating. There is a lot of work in putting the baskets together. Becky Zsoka, Dianna Redmon and Nancy Hitchcock are doing it again next year. Sherry had distributed to the Quilt Show committee chairs what their job description is and Denise Tharaldson and Sherry are going to update the job descriptions for the quilt show for next year’s committee people. Please review, if you have any comments, update and return them to Sherry or Denise. Patty Martin thanked Sherry for giving information to her for the website.

Derald Langwell: Modesto guild member won raffle quilt and was thrilled.

Jenny Lyon, Margo Wilson and Anita Marshall, Program Chair-Elects: They voiced their worry about Program’s budget. They have calculated $1,800 more in expenses than what they anticipated and workshop participation is down. It was mentioned that workshops will technically pay for themselves and we will need to discuss the number for next year’s budget. It was discussed that we have to continue with current workshop fees to members. It was only two years ago that it went up from $35 to $40. Jenny feels, as a teacher, that if we increase the workshop fee to $45 it will cut the participation down further.

Donna Brennan, Newsletter: Sharon, Treasurer, has before and after newsletter billing data for this

month. In the past, it cost $118/120 per month for printing of newsletter. The February bill was only $81 because we e-mailed it to 50-plus members.

Patty Martin, Webmistress: Every other month the American Sewing Guild holds an EQ7 how-to session. Is it okay to mention that at the general membership meeting? Someone in her group every other month does a demo. As a non-ASG member you can come to two meetings for free. She will announce that that is what she is doing for ASG. These are just members sharing what they have learned. It was approved for Patty to “Share the sisterhood.”

Sherry Hammer announced that she is going to the Gold Bug meeting Tuesday, February 28th, to thank them for volunteering at our preview night before the quilt show. Melinda Bula is their guest speaker.

Meeting adjourned at 6:45 p.m. by Pam Taylor.

Respectfully submitted, Anne K. Ross, Secretary

General Meeting Minutes Tuesday, February 14, 2012

Welcome and Call to Order

President Pam Taylor called the Folsom Quilt and Fiber Guild General Meeting to order at 7:06 p.m. Guests were welcomed, as was the Folsom History Museum with their raffle quilt. Everyone was encouraged to buy tickets. From Memorial Day to Labor Day, antique quilts and vintage clothing are needed for their display. These items need to be in good condition. Contact the History Museum by phone, (916) 985-2707.

It was moved by Pam Burke, seconded by Jerry Paddeck and member approved that the minutes be accepted as printed in the January newsletter.

Pay It Forward baskets for Esther Latino and Helen Powell need to be picked up.

There are a lot of things coming up:

Need volunteers for the new committees. New members, please join in the fun. Pot of Gold and Hospitality are a couple of the committees that need volunteers.

Zephyr applications are due tonight for May’s retreat. Please pay membership dues by April. Quilt day for Kids is coming up in March.

Dana Lahargoue introduced some children’s sewing scholarship winners. These scholarships are from our Education committee. This month we have twins, Sarah and Emma (10) and little sister Lilly (5). The twins taught Mom how to sew so Mom made Lilly’s skirt. The twins shared their quilts, skirts, purses and pencil bags.

Committee Reports

Becky Zsoka and Dianna Redmon, Boutique: Most profitable boutique ever. Membership deserves the thanks. The items donated were great. Save your stuff for next year. It can be anything, for men, kids.

Becky Zsoka and Dianna Redmon, Program: Still openings in Christine’s class tomorrow. It won’t be too hard to put your fabric together. Openings are still available in next month’s workshop with Linda Ballard. She is doing a mystery quilt.

Jenny Lyon, Program Chair-Elect: In April is Peggy Martin and she is doing paper piecing, May is Purses by Design, and in June is Mary Boyer who is doing a sweatshirt jacket using thrift store finds, very creative. Please sign up and participate.

Helen Hardwick, Membership: Get dues in by April 10. Don’t get crossed off membership list. Visitors pay a fee of $3.00. People on the waiting list have to come 1 out of every 4th meeting. Be sure to meet that requirement. We have no age limit.

Derald Langwell, Property Manager: Thank you to all the people who helped load and unload, thank you for set up as everyone jumped in and did their part. He made a couple of changes and mistakes. Please let Derald know if there is anything that you have a concern with regarding property.

Carmen Mitchell, filling in for Gretchen Jennings, Quilts of Valor and guild challenges: She needs the members who participated in the Quilts of Valor challenge to turn in their completed quilts by the March meeting. The organization needs a total of 50 quilts. There were 8 in the show and a total of 20 who signed up for the challenge.

Carmen also announced that Stitch n’ Pitch is coming up May 14th, where we sit in one section, do handwork of any kind. If interested, application will be here next month.

Sherry Hammer, Quilt Show Chair: She has a couple of lost and found items: camera case with digital card inside and lenses from someone’s glasses.

Lost on Thursday, set-up day. Some people who picked up quilts did not get their envelope—she has them. Thank you many times over.

Gold Bug Quilt Guild worked our preview party and they need to be recognized as they were a big help to us. They are having their guild meeting on Tuesday Feb. 28th and she is going and wants to personally thank them. Melinda Bula is their guest speaker.

We had some of the most beautiful quilts and fiber arts. It only took 3 hours on set-up day to get the quilts up. Take down was done in 40 minutes.

77 baskets and a total of 153 items at the boutique brought in $3,487; compared to last year $2,647. Thank you to our accountants. Nancy Balthasar’s decorations really tied the show together. Numbers for weekend: 1,985 people attended the show. Raffle quilt winner was Deborah Miller from Modesto. Sherry thanked all the committee heads. She knew a few of the members before working the show and she is grateful for how many more she knows. Raffle tickets sold were $1,000 over ticket sales from last year thanks to Denise Tharaldson and her effort to get the quilt out there to more guilds. Candy Wohlford sold the most, at 65 tickets. Derald Langwell toured the quilt 4 times. Sherry is so proud of everyone. It was a great quilt show.

Nancy Balthasar, Quilt Show Decorations: Nancy has a few leftover decorations from quilt show. Come see her if you would like to buy them.

Marilyn Long, Cuddle Quilts: Sew Days are coming. Look for the dates in the newsletter. Sheila Abel donated 6 cuddle quilts.

Jerry Paddeck, California Heritage Quilt Project: FQFG has been donating for years, totaling thousands of dollars. A case for the sesquicentennial quilt at 10th and O Street is finally in place. Several of our members are California Heritage Quilt Project members. This project was started back in the early 90’s with oral histories. We looked for places to store these stories. We think that the California Historical Society in San Francisco will be able to archive these stories. There are over 700 oral histories of women quilters in this area. Their stories and pictures are in this project. You all should applaud yourselves. We will have a kiosk with the quilt and a touch screen, so the students can have interaction with a voice. Helen Powell did a presentation with KVIE a few years ago.

Thank you for all your support as we would not have been able to purchase the case, which cost $27,000.

Donna Lomax, Zephyr: The trip is May 13-18, Sunday to Friday. Sign ups tonight. Sept. 9-14 is our next one in the fall. It is terrific. Everyone loved the show, our upbeat attitude. Thank you.

Patty Martin, Webmistress: If you want to upload a favorite quilt from the show, please e-mail her at [email protected].

Patty belongs to ASG (American Sewing Guild). She belongs to an EQ7 software group that meets once every other month. The first session is going to be Tuesday, Feb. 28 from 1-3pm at Fair Oaks Library. She has a projector and this is a “user” group. She will do a lesson one month and another member will do a lesson the next meeting, which are held every other month. You can attend two sessions without being a member. You can just show up and see if you want to do it. If you want to form a mini group, she will be willing to co-chair. Meet her at the break if you are interested.

Dana Lahargoue, Education Chair: Quilt Day for Kids is coming up March 31st at Journey Church. She needs volunteers to re-sign up, also, please sign up if you haven’t done it. With 70-100 kids coming through, this is a good place to promote our kid’s scholarship program.

Eileen Crawford, President Elect: Quilt Show is a year-round event. Eileen and Barbara Kiehn met last year to plan the 2013 raffle quilt. It is done! Thank you to all the people who made it. Laura Jansen quilted it. Original Barbara Kiehn pattern. Denise Tharaldson is our quilt show chair for next year.

After Show and Tell and a short break, Becky Zsoka introduced Christine Barnes. Visit her website at christinebarnes.com. Also, she has a color one-day retreat camp, called Color Camp. She has an e-newsletter called, Christine’s Color Connection. This is all on her website, so check it out.

Drawing winners: Birthday Drawing - Doris Bourgeois, Education Drawing - Fran McCleary, Shireen Hattan gift card for Project of the Month.

After Pot of Gold drawings, President Pam Taylor adjourned the meeting at 9:10 p.m.

Respectfully submitted, Anne K. Ross, Secretary

Boutique Success The Boutique was very successful at the quilt show with a 30% increase in revenue! We think the new system we used with assigning people a number may have encouraged them to buy more tickets.

The baskets and items were just wonderful. We want to thank everyone who donated something, helped us assemble baskets, bought tickets, or worked at the show in the boutique. YOU are a big reason this was so successful.

We are already starting to think ahead for next year's show. Save any items you think would be appropriate for us. We'll start collecting in July. If you need us to pick up any things, just let us know. Thank you again for your tremendous support.

Cuddle Quilts Reporting In… After a great quilt show, I am happy to report we received 16 quilts at our February meeting two days after our show! How awesome is that!!

The following members donated quilts: Ruth Lyons, Doris Bourgeois, Robbie Rodgers, Anne McCaleb, Sally Scholz, Sheila Abel, Dianna Redmon and Pam Conrad.

Thank you to Pam Conrad for making a quilt out of Judy Taubinger's (deceased member) stash that she received at the Folsom History Museum. Pam felt Judy would be very happy that she used her blocks to make a cuddle quilt.

Cuddle Quilt Sew Days will be Saturday, March 31st and Saturday, April 28th from 10 - 3 PM. These events will take place at the Journey Church, 450 Blue Ravine Rd in Folsom. This event is a potluck so bring your favorite dish to share! Don't forget. A new twist at these events will be prizes!!!!!! Make sure you come to see what it is all about!

Thank you for your continued support. It is greatly appreciated.
