The world famous Olympic swimmer, Michael Fred Phelps, was born in Baltimore, Maryland in the U.S.A., on June 30, 1985. His father, Fred, worked for the Maryland State Police and Phelps, who is called ‘MP’ by his friends,

started swimming when he was 7 years old. When he was 10 he was the fastest US swimmer of his age group. He graduated from Towson High School in 2003. In this year he first won the World Swimmer of the Year Award. Between 2004 and 2008 he studied sports management at the University of Michigan. The rest of the world first noticed Phelps in 2000 when, at the age of only 15, he competed in the Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia, and finished fifth in the finals.Phelps continued to develop as a swimmer. He won six gold medals at the Athens Olympic Games in 2004, and eight in Beijing in 2008. This is the record number of gold medals in any single Olympic Games.He is now a rich man. He earned about $5 million from advertising in 2008 and used some of the money to start the Michael Phelps Foundation, an organization that encourages children to swim.Phelps’ physical shape almost certainly helps him to swim so fast. When he holds his arms out, the distance from fingertip to fingertip is 201 cm. This is more than his height – he is 193 cm tall – and his feet are 49 mm long!

A t one o’clock on the afternoon of August 24th in the year 79, the people of the busy Roman

town of Pompeii were doing their daily activities. Across the bay of Naples the commander of the Roman fleet, Pliny, was relaxing on his boat after lunch and a bath.

Suddenly, the nearby volcano, Mount Vesuvius, erupted. A cloud of ash shot into the sky ‘like a large tree’. The sun disappeared behind the cloud and the sky went completely dark. Some people stayed where they were and watched the eruption, others tried to escape. Thousands of people died, either in Pompeii or when they were running away.

Pliny sailed his boat nearer to Vesuvius. He was trying to rescue survivors, but he could not. He, like many others, died while he was breathing poisonous gases.

Luckily his nephew, also called Pliny (the Younger) survived and was able to write a description of the eruption.

Tate Tate Modern was opened in London in 2000 in an enormous building which used to be a power station. It has a wonderful collection of paintings which are arranged thematically, including works by Picasso, Monet, Andy Warhol, and many, many others. Some people go just to see the building, which has been beautifully converted and is quite breathtaking in its scale. It also has marvelous views of the Thames river, especially from the upper floors. The museum has a restaurant, cafeteria, and a terrace overlooking the river where you can have tea on summer evenings.

The bus is very slow because it has to stop in many different cities.

O ne of the fastest and most modern passenger trains in the world is the Eurostar, which covers the distance

between London and Paris in just three hours – a trip which used to take five or six hours and always involved a slow ferry crossing. You can leave London Waterloo at four o’clock on a Friday afternoon and be in the center of Paris in time for dinner. One of the most exciting things about the Eurostar is that it goes through a tunnel under the sea. This part of the trip takes about 20 minutes and you don’t really notice what is happening, but some people choose not to travel by the Eurostar because they find the idea very frightening. The trains are very comfortable and there is a good

variety of food and drink available in the buffet car. One slight disappointment, though, is that the train travels so fast, particularly on the French side where it speeds up considerably, that you can’t really see anything clearly out of the window.

2 Reading and writing a Read the article. What does the writer think is strange about going to the gym?

It is becoming more and more popular nowadays for young people to spend part of their free time exercising or

“working out” at the gym. Some people pay very high membership fees, then try to make sure that they get their money’s worth by going to the gym at least three times a week. In some ways, this is a reaction to an otherwise sedentary lifestyle. Most young people spend several hours a day in front of a TV or computer screen, and they then feel they need to balance this with vigorous exercise, especially if they are worried about their weight. It is also seen as “trendy” to dress up in the latest workout gear and go to the gym. Many parents feel nervous about letting their kids play

or exercise in the street or in the park, and the gym seems to offer a certain amount of safety. But it’s funny that people spend money to use machines which imitate things like walking, rowing, and bicycle riding when they could walk, row, or cycle in the fresh air and for free!

Derek Walcott is a very

well-known writer. He

has written several plays

and many poems and

has won a number of

awards including, in

1992, the Nobel Prize

for Literature. Life has

not always been easy

for Derek, however. He

was born in 1930 in St. Lucia and raised in a

poor family. He went to College in St. Lucia

and, later, to the University of the West Indies

in Jamaica. He has worked as a schoolteacher

and as a college professor at such prestigious

institutions as Yale, Harvard, and Columbia, as

well as being a prolific writer. His first play was

produced in 1950.

At the age of 34, Walcott published a collection

of his poems called In a Green Night. The poems

were popular and showed the world what Walcott

was capable of. For years, Walcott divided his

time between the Caribbean and Boston, where

he taught literature and creative writing.

Dear Paul,

We’re having a wonderful time in Salvador, Brazil. It’s so great to be staying so close to the Park of the City. The park is a protected area. It is huge and it’s so nice to find a big green area in the middle of the city. Mom likes the flowers and trees there, but I enjoy it because I can go jogging there every morning before breakfast.

Last night we went out to a special restaurant for a typical delicious dinner. We tried a moqueca bowl, a Brazilian fish with tomato and coconut milk stew. Really, it was great.

Tomorrow we’re going to visit Pelourinho, an old part of Salvador, that’s worth visiting for its cobblestone streets, pastel-colored buildings, restaurants, stores, and nightlife!
