About The Lawnside Scholarship Club, Inc.
The Lawnside Scholarship Club was founded in 1945 and incorporated in 1973. Mrs. Helen Mae Henderson initiated the scholarship club idea when the Democratic Club ceased to function after awarding one scholarship. The first award was $50 for the highest ranking high school graduate from Lawnside. The founding members were: Linese Miller, Helen Mae Henderson, Elva Whittington, Edith Davis Andrews, Alice Still and Helen Moore Davis. These women held bake sales, sold newspapers and conducted other fundraising activities to acquire the money to encourage students. Over the years, the number of members grew from the original six to twenty-five. Currently, there are 11 members. The Club awards $7,750 each year and administers nearly $9,000 in grants from individuals and community groups. With the help of the Club, many of our residents have become teachers, doctors, lawyers, accountants, engineers and other professionals. Several have returned to Lawnside after completing their educations. Some past scholarship recipients have been or are now Club members. Scholarships are awarded to eligible students graduating from any high school who have resided in Lawnside for at least four years. Through the generosity of the late Elizabeth Jones of Lawnside, the Club has been able to expand its giving and increase its awards. Additionally, the $500 Elizabeth Jones Award for Academic Excellence is presented to graduates with averages of 93 or better. We are indeed grateful to the many other persons and organizations that contribute yearly to help our students further their educational goals beyond high school. Your patronage and support is important to us. Inquiries and/or donations may be directed to any LSC member or in writing to: THE LAWNSIDE SCHOLARSHIP CLUB, INC. P.O. Box 66 Lawnside, New Jersey 08045-0066 Or visit us at http://lawnsidescholarshipclub.org and Facebook.com/Lawnsidescholarshipclub The Lawnside Scholarship Club, Inc., is a tax-exempt organization under I.R.S. Code 501 (c) (3) and incorporated in the State of New Jersey.

A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
Dear Friends and Supporters, We are pleased to celebrate the 75th Anniversary of the Lawnside Scholarship Club and the 45th Salute to Graduating Seniors. It is with excitement that we celebrate our honored guests, the Graduating Class of 2020. We wish to thank all of their relatives and friends who have supported them during this unprecedented time of the Covid-19 crisis. The Lawnside Scholarship Club offers our deepest thanks to our 2020 donors, especially our Lawnside community award donors. Each year the Club looks for new ways to raise funds in order to encourage our youth to develop their talents. In the past, we have held college fairs with college representatives participating. We have also held No-Show Balls, a No-Show Bar-B-Que, and a No-Show Holiday fundraiser because it is exciting not to have to get dressed up, leave your backyard, or go out in the cold and snow! At our seventh annual Black History Celebration, we honored our founding, former and current club members. We have had many successful annual Jazz Brunches at the Tavistock Country Club in order to celebrate our former graduates. In past years, Club members have sold soft pretzels and homemade lemonade in our keepsake water bottles and participated in the Heritage Day parade with Lawnside’s top four graduating seniors. It is the highlight of each and every year to celebrate Lawnside students’ achievements at our annual Salute to Graduating Seniors Awards Celebration. For 75 years, you have supported the Lawnside Scholarship Club in our endeavors great and small. Thank you for partnering with us as we continue to promote the advancement of Lawnside’s youth. I have been honored to be serving my sixth term as the president of the Club. I am endlessly appreciative of my fellow members’ help and guidance as we strive together to achieve “Excellence Through Education.” We know that when we encircle our community’s young people with love, then we all succeed. That is why we honor the Graduating Class of 2020. To the graduating Class of 2020, you are a unique class who will always be set apart by commencing during an extraordinary time in global history. Your strength, intelligence and courage have already been tested, and you know how to stand up to adversity. I commend you for your commitment to academic excellence, and I know that you will never give up on your dreams. “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.” (Proverbs 3:5-6) Sincerely,
Sharon Whitaker President

The Lawnside Scholarship Club is pleased to hold its first Virtual Salute to Graduating Seniors using a combination of Zoom conferencing and Facebook Live. In recent years, we have held our Annual Salute to Seniors and other special events at the Wayne R. Bryant Community Center, Haddon Heights High School and Tavistock Country Club. As we salute the graduates, we look forward to helping them use educational excellence as the key to unlock possibilities and opportunities in their own lives and the lives of others. Join us in encouraging everyone to stay strong and to grow spiritually, emotionally and intellectually.

Ray Fisher, Stage and Screen Actor Lawnside native Ray Fisher is a stage and screen actor who shot to fame for his
portrayal of Victor Stone, aka Cyborg, in the Warner Bros. films Batman v.
Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League.
Fisher, a graduate of Lawnside Middle School and Haddon Heights High School, has appeared onstage as
Muhammad Ali in the Off-Broadway production of Will Power’s “Fetch
Clay, Make Man.” Although best known for his role as Victor Stone, aka
Cyborg, in Batman v. Superman: Dawn
of Justice and Justice League, Fisher can
be seen most recently as Detective
Henry Hays in the third season of
HBO’s “True Detective” alongside
Academy Award-winner Mahershala
Ali. His Victor Stone character is scheduled to return in 2022 in
“The Flash.”
He offered an inspirational message to
Lawnside School’s 8th grade graduates in
June.
The New York Times
Sept. 12, 2013
Fetch Clay, Make Man
“Bursts of Ali’s famous rhyming
braggadocio are delivered with flair
and fluency, and Mr. Fisher’s
smooth good looks really do seem to
justify Ali’s boast that he’s as
“pretty as a girl.” His lively, funny
and sympathetic portrait provides the play with a necessary core of authenticity.”
Congratulations 12 Class of 2020!
In Memory of Elizabeth Jones
Her elegant spirit and generous bequest have left much
for future generations of Lawnside graduates.

My Symphony
To live content with small means; to seek elegance rather than luxury,
and refinement rather than fashion; to be worthy not respectable;
and wealthy, not rich; to study hard, think quietly, talk gently, act frankly;
to listen to stars and birds, babes and sages with open hearts; to bear all cheerfully,
do all bravely, await occasions, hurry never; in a word, to let the spiritual,
unbidden and unconscious, grow up through the common.
This is to be my symphony.
Congratulations 13 Class of 2020!

Advice from President Barack Obama’s May 16, 2020 Speech for “Graduate Together: High School Class of 2020 Commencement”
First, don’t be afraid. America’s gone through tough times before — slavery, civil war, famine, disease, the Great Depression and 9/11. And each time we came out stronger, usually because a new generation, young people like you, learned from past mistakes and figured out how to make things better.
Second, do what you think is right. Doing what feels good, what’s convenient, what’s easy — that’s how little kids think. Unfortunately, a lot of so-called grown-ups, including some with fancy titles and important jobs, still think that way — which is why things are so screwed up.
And finally, build a community. No one does big things by themselves. Right now, when people are scared, it’s easy to be cynical and say let me just look out for myself, or my family, or
people who look or think or pray like me. But if we’re going to get through these difficult times; if we’re going to create a world where everybody has the opportunity to find a job, and afford college; if we’re going to save the environment and defeat future pandemics, then we’re going to have to do it together. So be alive to one another’s struggles. Stand up for one another’s rights. Leave behind all the old ways of thinking that divide us — sexism, racial prejudice, status, greed — and set the world on a different path.
Congratulations 37 Class of 2020!

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE CLASS OF 2020
Dear Class of 2020,
Yours is the class that for the first time in the history of the country has seen a complete and
unbelievable upheaval because of the Covid-19 pandemic; including schools closing down and
online classes from home, no proms, no sports, probably no formal graduation. But still we proudly
see you graduating and heading toward college, or technical school, or a job.
As a member of the class of 1960, I say to the class graduating exactly 60 years later carry on
with your heads held high because you are young, gifted and Black and there is a whole world
waiting for you to help make the changes necessary for a more loving, just and greener world.
Remember as a Black in America your heritage is one not just of slavery but of a people of
outstanding achievements because of love, faith, and hope!
On the back of our African heritage as the original people of the earth, the original and best
in architecture, medicine, mathematics through the Egyptian Imhotep, the renaissance man known
and reverence in Greece and Africa and throughout the then know world as the Prince of Peace!
Then in America you have the extraordinary achievements most recently of a Black woman who
was one of the most gifted mathematicians in America; that is, Catherine Johnson, the woman
portrayed in the movie Hidden Figures, who help put a man on the moon while working at NASA.
So, I say Class of 2020 continue your journey. Rise to the challenge of making this a better
world by believing that through Jesus Christ, the Black Messiah, who came to liberate the
oppressed, bring hope and love to the poor, the disenfranchised, and most especially to the children,
you can achieve if you can only believe.
Love and Best Wishes,
Mrs. Roberta W. Butler
