Following the 2014 Annual Conference, Resident Bishop William

T. McAlilly, shared with a select group of clergy information

regarding a very promising and exciting initiative and opportunity.

Beginning January 2015, a Doctor of Ministry Degree program is

being offered by Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington

D.C., through the leadership of Dr. Douglas Meeks of the

Vanderbilt School of Divinity. The title of the Doctor of Ministry

track is "Wesley, Mission and Evangelism." This is a two-year

process. Bishop McAlilly was asked to select 25 clergy leaders

within the Nashville Episcopal Area, which includes both the

Memphis and Tennessee Conferences, to participate in this program.

Reverend Lea Thornton Griffith has been chosen to be a part of this

purposeful undertaking. Criteria for participation includes, but is

not limited to: 1) meeting the academic standards of Wesley

Seminary and 2) supporting evidence that the participant is highly

capable of providing outstanding connectional and congregational

leadership to the local churches as well as the entire Nashville

Episcopal Area for decades to come. Indeed, GOD has blessed

Newbern FUMC with a Pastor who, throughout her ministry, has

demonstrated the desire to establish Missional congregations. We

offer our congratulations to Reverend Lea for this honor and we

"Learning to Be Still"

Do you ever get tired? Tired of teaching Sunday school, tired of

going to meetings, tired of being the one that gets called when something is wrong or something breaks,

tired of being asked to do something or serve on a committee?

We all get tired. That’s being human. Even Jesus got tired and needed time to rest. How do you get rest?

How do you not get burned out? The Bible tells us in Psalms 46:10 to be still. Jesus tells us in Matthew

11:28 that if we come to Him, He will give us rest. Are we being still, being quiet so we can hear God speak

to us? Are we allowing Him to be our refuge, give us rest and replenish us so we can first identify His mission

and what He wants us to do and second, join Him in that work?

We encourage you to prayerfully and intentionally take time to be still. Be quiet. Listen for the voice of God.

Feel for the nudging of the Holy Spirit. Help our church become a church that meets God in the mission

field….in our community and backyard developing relationships that matter and introducing and sharing

Christ’s love to everyone.

United Methodist Women is organized according to the group's need and size. As our need and size has changed, we have restructured our Newbern UMW Organization. We will no longer have 2 circles. We will all become one group and be known as United Methodist Women beginning in January of 2015. We will meet on the 3rd. Monday of the month at 1:30 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall. All women of the church are invited to attend. You do not have to be a member of Newbern First United Methodist to be a member. All we ask is that you know God and be willing to help with Missions both at Home and Globally. Change is never easy. We ask for your prayers as we go forth with our Purpose and Spiritual Growth in 2015.
