Ques on: Why do Catholics light candles in church? Answer: Candles have been part of the Church’s worship from the earliest mes. In the days before electricity, candles and oil lamps were the ways that people lighted buildings. Even today, we o en s ll depend on candles during power outages, relying on their flickering flames to bring light into the dark. Like our ancestors, we also light candles on special occasions. Think about a fes ve family meal or a roman c dinner for two — there will o en be candles on the table, special objects for a special event. We light candles on birthday cakes and carry them in processions. We also place candles at makeshi memorials that appear when there has been an accident or act of violence. In these moments, their light casts aside a different kind of darkness — the darkness of grief, fear, and death. The custom of the early Chris ans ligh ng candles and lamps at the tombs of the martyrs gave way to the prac ce of having candles at Mass, honoring the sacredness of the celebra on. As Chris ans decorated their worship spaces with statues and icons, they would burn candles in front of sacred images and the relics of the saints, basically “shining a light” on what they held to be sacred. When pilgrims would visit these shrines, they would o en bring candles to light before the image or relic. These candles came to be a symbol of the person, and their prayer and the burning these candles came to be understood as an extension and con nua on of the prayer that was offered. What began as a prac cal way to provide light has come to be a symbol of the hopes, desires, loves, losses, fears, and faith of everyday Chris ans offering their prayers to God and his saints.

STEWARDSHIP

GOSPEL MEDITATION Fi h Sunday of Easter When earthly lives end, especially when the person is younger, we tend to focus upon and consider what was lost. We think of lost opportuni es — things they won’t be able to see, babies they won’t be able to cradle, and adventures that now must go undiscovered. Our minds create this chasm between earth and heaven that sees the losses of this life as permanent ones, never possible to achieve again. This percep on causes many folks to remain stuck in their grief as they ponder all of the missed opportuni es and regrets. This is not resurrec on thinking. All of the love that we can give and receive, the joy and ela on that can be experienced, the adventures that can be undertaken, and the possibili es to be discovered are all part of a con nuous journey. They are not ends in and of themselves but are all part of the unfolding of a rela onship we have with God, who not only makes all of these wonderful things possible now but sustains them and fulfills them into eternity. The percep on and experience of loss is really an illusion, because in God’s eternal kingdom and in God’s me, nothing is ever lost. Even the most in mate and tender of moments we can conceive of sharing with another human being are only part of a journey toward perfect in mate and tender moments to be shared with God in our resurrected life. We become like God and see God as He is in eternity. What greater joy, love, and hope can ever be discovered as we walk down our o en dimly lit paths in this world. This is an awesome wonder and magnificent news to behold. Call to mind someone you have lost in death. How do you see them now? How do you see yourself in heaven? Remind yourself, again, that God is the Way, the Truth and the Life. Our happiness is not going to be fully realized in this world, and there is nothing we can find here that cannot be found one hundred fold in eternity. It’s all about rela onship, and not solely about the rela onships we have with each other, ourselves, and the world in which we live. It’s about our rela onship with God. If we realize how special that one rela onship really is, then there is only one par cular of heaven and life eternal that really ma ers: namely, that we fall into love eternal and discover truth. For when we finally close our eyes in death, then all will be well as long as we are with God. There are no losses, only gains.

RESPECT LIFE CORNER

How To Build A Culture Of Life

Watching the news and reading the headlines, we may feel helpless

seeing the heartbreaking lack of re-spect for human life. How do we re-spond? Changing the culture is a pro-cess of conversion that begins in our own hearts. When we encounter Christ, experience His love, and deepen our rela onship with Him, we become more aware of our own immeasurable worth and that of others. His unchang-ing love is the source of our God-given dignity, which, therefore, cannot be taken away. When someone is facing great trials, we need to walk with them on their journey, intercede for them, and be open to sharing Christ’s love however He directs. We simply need to follow where He leads.

Prayer Is Visi ng Silent Strength, Volume 14, Issue 1, Fall 2019

The Newsle er of the Marian Mantle Group

I have been visi ng Jesus since I was a young girl. At the Cath-olic grade school I a ended, our teacher frequently encouraged us to “make a visit.” To be honest, at that age I wasn’t exactly sure who, what or why we were visi ng. But each day, my classmates and I would stop at the school chapel and kneel before the Blessed Sacrament before we went outside for recess.

Throughout my life, during my most unse led mes or when I have been most worried about a loved one, I have found peace and comfort praying before the Blessed Sacrament. Over me, I began to sense that God was calling me to commit to a weekly Holy Hour of Eu-charis c Adora on. I was resistant, and I had lots of excuses. For exam-ple, God had given me a family. What if my son needed something during my scheduled hour? Also, God had blessed me with a busy work and travel schedule, and the only regular

me I was truly available on a regular basis was before work on Friday mornings. In reality, I did not want to give up control of my me and schedule, even to God. Thankfully, in God’s Time each of those excuses seemed to melt away. First, my son le for college. The chance of him

needing me to drop everything and tend to his needs was gone. A few months later, while visi ng the chap-el, I saw they needed an adorer at 6:00 am on Fridays, the exact me that was the only me that would work for me. I even had a friend show me the bag she brings to Ado-

ra on, stocked with her rosary, bible, a notebook and pen, and I remember think-ing, ‘See God, I can’t do a regular hour. I don’t have a bag like that.’ I could almost hear and see God sigh and roll his eyes at me at that ex-cuse. Days lat-

er, in my basement, I found the exact kind of bag my friend had. I was out of excuses. I contacted the Adora on scheduler and told her that 6:00 am Fridays would be my me with Jesus. Since commi ng to a Holy Hour, I feel like Jesus is seeping more and more into my life, like water that soaks into dry ground. I am more peaceful, and I feel as though I am covering my loved one in prayer in a way that I have not been able to be-fore. God reminds me that He has them, and I need to let go of the con-trol that I think I have over their lives. If you have the opportunity to visit Jesus in Adora on or commit to a regular Holy Hour, I encourage you to take advantage of this wonderful gi . Even if you have made excuses like me, don’t worry. Jesus is pa ent. When you do arrive for a visit, He will welcome you and give you peace that surpasses all understanding.
