First Grade Assignment Sheet - Week 6 Due: October 1, 2020 Student’s Name____________________________________ Mrs. Rachel Lyles 901-270-4013 [email protected] Bible/Character Study: Respect- Showing regard for the worth of someone or something. Memorize Commandments 8, 9, and 10 by October 1 st. Be prepared to say or sing all Ten Commandments. 8. steal You shall not steal. (v. 15) 9. false testimony You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor. (v. 16) 10. covet You shall not covet your neighbor’s house. (v. 17) Family activity: Watch this video and try to sing along! We’ll be practicing this song in class too. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o2q32Q9dtOM Students can sing the Ten Commandments (not the whole song) instead of reciting them if they prefer. Family Discussion: Remember that the Ten Commandments were given to us so we could learn how to show respect first to God and then to others. Practice showing respect at home to our family members and then it will become much easier to show respect to our friends and to others. Remember, parents, “Actions speak louder than words.” Respect truly is a two-way street. Only when we give respect to our children can we expect them to give respect to us. In Bible times, tax collectors had a reputation for taking too much money for taxes. When the tax collectors asked for more than the rightful taxes, they were stealing. Read about the respect that Jesus showed to a tax collector named Zaccheus and how it changed his life in Luke 19:2-8. Family discussion: “Thou shalt not steal” means all forms of taking something that doesn't belong to us. We have discussed that looking at someone else’s paper and taking that person’s answers is also stealing. “Thou shalt not give false testimony against thy neighbor” is talking about not lying. This includes not only not lying about someone, but telling any form of gossip. We should keep confidences and not spread rumors — whether they are true or not. “Thou shalt not covet your neighbor’s house” is one of the most difficult commandments in this day and age to teach our children. They see what their friends have and want it too. We need to let them know that spending time and energy desiring what others have is contrary to what we should be doing. We need to work on accomplishing good, and not concentrate so much on wanting what everyone else has. “Something to think about” - Let’s think about showing respect for families. We might show respect for each other but do we treat each other with respect.

  • First Grade Assignment Sheet - Week 6 Due: October 1, 2020  Student’s Name____________________________________  Mrs. Rachel Lyles  901-270-4013 [email protected]

    ★ Bible/Character Study:

    ○ Respect- Showing regard for the worth of someone or something.

    ○ Memorize Commandments 8, 9, and 10 by October 1st. Be prepared to say or sing all Ten Commandments.

    ■ 8. steal You shall not steal. (v. 15)

    ■ 9. false testimony You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor. (v. 16)

    ■ 10. covet You shall not covet your neighbor’s house. (v. 17)

    ○ Family activity: Watch this video and try to sing along! We’ll be practicing this song in class too. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o2q32Q9dtOM Students can sing the Ten Commandments (not the whole song) instead of reciting them if they prefer.

    ○ Family Discussion: Remember that the Ten Commandments were given to us so we could learn how to show respect first to God and then to others.

    ○ Family discussion: “Thou shalt not steal” means all forms of taking something that doesn't belong to us.

    ○ “Something to think about”- Let’s think about showing respect for families. We might show respect for each other but do we treat each other with respect.

  • Treating family members with respect is usually more difficult than treating others with respect. We live with these people all of the time, so they deserve it the most but often receive it the least. In this electronic age, our time, especially our family time, does not always receive respect. It saddens me to go to a restaurant and see a family sitting at a table together and all members are on a different electronic device, not communicating with each other. As a family, think about how you are treating each other. Are you showing each other respect with time, attitudes, behavior, voices? Remember that God created you as a family and He expects us to “show proper respect to everyone”, especially our family.
