The Glendale Tech on Tappodcast discussesentrepreneurship, innovation, andtech in and around Glendale.

With heat, holidays, and lots of time spent outside – summer is prime time foremergencies. It is our duty, as the City of Glendale, to provide an efficient andcoordinated response to any disaster that could threaten the well-being andhealth of our residents and visitors. Thankfully, Glendale combines proactivemeasures with a flexible and effective Emergency Operations Plan to save lives, communicate, and prevent the destruction of property.

In a fire emergency, for example…

The Fire Department coordinates fire, and medical operations. The PoliceDepartment coordinates movement and evacuation operations during anemergency, law enforcement, alerting and warning, as well as traffic and accesscontrol. The Public Information Office is responsible for disseminating timelyinformation to the public and is the point of contact for the public, media or otherorganizations seeking critical information directly from the incident or event.

The Finance Section is responsible for maintaining records on personnel andequipment time, for providing payments to vendors for supplies and equipmentusage, and for determining the cost considerations or various alternativestrategies associated with incident planning. The Public Works Departmentassists other Operation Section Branches by providing construction equipmentand operators as necessary, provides heavy equipment assistance to units asrequired, provides emergency construction and repair to damaged roadways, provides flood-fighting assistance, such as sandbagging, rerouting waterwaysaway from populated areas, and debris clearance.

The Planning Section gathers information from a variety of sources, analyzesand verifies information, and prepares and updates internal EOC informationand map displays. This section also collects, organizes, and files all completedemergency related forms, to include: all EOC position logs, situation reports,EOC Action Plans and any other related information, just prior to the end of eachoperational period. The GWP Section assists with the repair of utility systems asrequired, de-energizing power lines to avoid potential dangers to the public andsafety personnel, and ensuring there is sufficient water supply in the City’sreservoirs for firefighting purposes.

You’re annoyed about the situation now and are wondering why ithappened. Remember earlier in the day when you let your balloons go? Thoseballoons eventually came down, got caught in power lines, and caused thisoutage that’s causing you so much misery.

Outages like these are not uncommon. In Glendale alone, mylar balloonscaused over 25% of all power outages last year. Outages caused by balloonstook about 37 minutes to be restored, and some took over 2 hours! They cancause a lot of damage to power lines.

By simply holding on to your balloons and not letting them fly away into the sky,you can help prevent outages and not be in the dark. Dispose of them properlyby cutting them up and throwing them away instead of letting them go.
