Philanthropy is not only the binding force which Larry Vickar has been tightly connected with the emerging Filipinos in the early 70’s but also his personal and social connection with some members

of the Filipino community. As the sales manager of Ed Vickar Community Chevrolet at Main Street, Larry started his special brand of doing business by serving the young community. He hired Filipino sales persons to give our kababayans a real home environment in dealing with the needs of vehicles and its corresponding services.

Ed Vickar Community Chev moved to Transcona and Larry Vickar has already developed a closer relationship with the community. Larry and his wife

Tova engulfed themselves into the cultural fabrics of the Filipino community. Larry and Tova were always present in fundraising parties, induction ball, picnics and other community events. And almost everybody knew who is Larry Vickar and his wife, Tova. A big change in the dealership when Larry and Tova bought the dealership and it became Vickar Community Chevs under the holding company, Vickar Automotive Group.

Pacquiao did his best to please the viewers

Filipino boxing analysts are one in saying that Manny Pacquiao did her best to entertain the

more than 50,000 fans who instead witnessed a one-man show due to the refusal of Ghanaian Joshua Clottey to trade decent punches.

The fans are used to seeing the pound-for-pound king knocking out his opponent but what they saw was a boring fight if it is to be measured according to Pacquiao’s previous bouts. Although it appears that Clottey had conceded as early as the 4th round, Pacquiao still went for the kill by throwing an average of 100 punches per round even until the final bell. The boxing experts were right in saying that Pacquiao is not just a warrior, but also an entertainer. As for Manny’s next opponent, the analysts said it must be Floyd Mayweather Jr. But first, the flamboyant American must beat Sugar Shane Mosely in their bout on May 1.

‘Zombie Voters’ Could Cause Failure of Elections

Recently, the Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting (PPCRV) revealed

the discovery of 40,000 voters entered as double, multiple, or dead registrants in Region 11 in Southern Mindanao. In Philippine election jargon, double or multiple registrants are called “flying voters” while dead registrants are called “zombie voters.”

PPCRV’s legal counsel Howard Calleja told the media, “what we discovered in Davao City and Davao del Sur is only the tip of the iceberg.” He said that the 40,000 invalid registrants could “make or break a local election.” However, if such a number also existed in all provinces, the nationwide total of zombie and flying voters could reach three to four million, enough to change the results of the presidential elections.

A few days after the PPCRV exposé, the office of Calleja was broken in. He told the media that what the burglars stole was the list of double, multiple, and dead registrants which has taken the PPCRV volunteers lots of time to compile. “There appears to be a concerted effort from some group to ensure that the Comelec’s final

but unpurged voters’ list that is filled with double, multiple and dead voters stays unpurged,” he said.

According to sources close to Calleja, Calleja had been “receiving death threats allegedly from a son-in-law of a high ranking City Hall official in Davao City.” Another source said that the bigger suspects in the break-in are members of the Comelec “cheating syndicate.”

A recent news report stated that Comelec disclosed the discovery of 704,542 voters with double or multiple registration records. However, Archbishop Oscar Cruz of the Kontra-Daya watchdog group said that “the voters’ list is padded by no less than five million.” That’s 10% of the total registered voters. Could this be a harbinger to a massive cheating operation in the forthcoming elections on May 10?

“Garci generals”This brings to mind the “Hello

Garci” election cheating scandal during the 2004 elections when wiretapped conversations between President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo -- who was then running for president -- and Virgilio “Garci” Garcillano were recorded

wherein Arroyo asked Garci about the status of one million votes he was supposed to deliver to her. Garci was then a high Comelec official in Mindanao who reputedly coordinated the manipulation of votes in the region with the help of other Comelec officials who became to be known as the “Garci boys.” After the 2004 elections, the “Garci boys” were promoted to higher positions in Comelec. Except for Garci, almost all of the “Garci boys” are still working in Comelec.

The “Hello Garci” tapes also revealed the alleged participation of several generals in the cheating operations in Mindanao. These generals -- known as the “Garci generals” -- included Hermogenes Esperon Jr. who was later promoted to Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP). Indeed, reward comes with “success.”

The recent appointment of Lt. Gen. Delfin Bangit as the new Chief of Staff of the AFP has rekindled fear that the military would once again be involved in an attempt to manipulate the outcome of the elections. Bangit’s longstanding subservient association with Arroyo has given rise to the perception that his loyalty to Arroyo was the overriding criterion for his appointment, passing over several senior and more qualified generals.

Bangit served as Arroyo’s senior aide-de-camp when she was Vice President from 1998 until she took over the presidency in 2001. From 2003 to 2006, Bangit served as the commander of Arroyo’s Praetorian guard,

the Presidential Security Group (PSG). He concurrently served as Arroyo’s “spy master,” the head of the Intelligence Service of the AFP where he adopted the code name of “Emperor.” Prior to his appointment as Chief of Staff, Bangit commanded the Army, the military’s largest component.

Project Full MoonSister Mary John Mananzan --

who is co-chair of the Association of Major Religious Superiors of the Philippines (AMRSP) -- suspects that the “Emperor” may have been appointed to manipulate the May 10 elections. She mentioned a code name -- “Project Full Moon” -- for the alleged plot. She said that it involves the hacking of the Automated Election System (AES) which will be used for the first time on May 10. In a text message to the media, she said: “National Defense Secretary Norberto Gonzalez will manage the May election cheating through Bangit and Brigadier General Romeo Prestoza.” Prestoza is Arroyo’s current “spy master” -- head of the Intelligence Service of the AFP.

With the May 10 elections less than two months away, there is widespread apprehension that things are not going to proceed smoothly. There are talks of “no election,” “no proclamation,” “failure of elections,” and, now, “Project Full Moon.”

Comelec’s decision to provide the Board of Election Inspectors (BEIs) with a “watchlist” of multiple registrant voters as a preventive measure against flying voters is being protested by members of Congress. They said

that the estimated five million “zombie votes” could cause a “failure of elections.” Cagayan de Oro City Rep. Rufus Rodriguez told the media: “There is no such thing as ‘watchlist’ in an election and I don’t understand why the Comelec is insisting on this. Kalokohan yan (That’s nonsense).”

Line of successionRodriguez said, “it will be

very difficult for Congress to make a decision once the issue on these multiple registrants is raised during the canvassing.” Indeed, an impasse could cause an indefinite delay in proclaiming the winners in the presidential, vice presidential, and senatorial races. And this would lead to a “no proclamation” scenario wherein the line of presidential succession is invoked. Since there would be no President, Vice President, and Senate President after June 30, the next in line would be the Speaker of the House of Representatives. If Arroyo wins her congressional seat -- which is expected -- and subsequently chosen by her peers in the House to be their Speaker, then she would become acting President.

Needless to say, the military would play a pivotal role during a constitutional crisis. As the “protector of the people and the State,” the military could impose martial law in the event that things would go wrong. In this case, it doesn’t necessarily mean “to protect the people and the State,” but to provide Arroyo with firepower, if necessary, to get what she wants -- political power!

How many more Jeffreys? The sad story

I’ve been closely following the story of Jeffrey Cansanay, the young Filipino accused

of shooting and killing a teenager because of a gang feud over control of the drug trade in Winnipeg. Not because of anything else, but my desire to find out what led a young man like him to this situation.

On Monday (March 15, 2010) the trial of Cansanay got underway. He is accused of firing

the gunshot that killed Phil Haiart, 17, and injured another man, 25, on the night of October 10, 2005. The two victims were about to cross Maryland Street near Sargent Avenue when they were shot by errant gunfire from across a parking lot.

Police and justice officials said shots were supposedly for the two members of a street gang outside 606 McGee St. in Winnipeg’s West

End, where Cansanay resides. Rivals of that gang were purportedly using the home to sell crack cocaine, causing tension and outbreaks of violence in the immediate area.

On Thursday (March 18, 2010) Gharib, Abdullah, a crown witness belonging to the Mad Cowz street gang testified he saw Cansanay on the day of the shooting, carrying the .22 calibre rifle that killed Haiart, and injured another man.

Cansanay, 24, has pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder, along with three counts of attempted murder in connection to the shooting. If convicted, he faces a life sentence without being eligible for parole for a minimum of 10 years. As a permanent resident who immigrated to Canada from the Philippines in 1994, Cansanay also faces deportation.

The trial continues for the next few weeks.

Who is Jeffrey Cansanay?

According to published reports, Cansanay came to Canada with his father and his sisters in 1994. He would have been only 8 years old then. He was said to be often emotional during his testimony at the hearing. He described how he and his family suffered intense abuse at the hands of his father. He also said his father was deported back to the Philippines two years ago because of a drug trafficking conviction.

It’s not hard to guess how it was with this family. No mother, only an irresponsible father who abuses his children. No good role model around. There could only be a few possible ending to the sad story - one of them is disaster.

How many more?

According to Statistics Canada, Canadians of Filipino origin make up one of the largest non-European ethnic groups in Canada. In 2001, the Filipino community was the third largest non-European ethnic group in the country, after the Chinese and East Indian communities. That year, almost 328,000 people of Filipino origin lived in Canada,

representing 1.1% of the total Canadian population. Currently here in Manitoba, close to 60,000 people are of Filipino descent.

Many Filipinos I know say they decided to immigrate to Canada because of their children’s future. If they only work hard, they know that they have a good chance to provide their children good education, endless opportunities and a much better life than what they can offer back in the Philippines. But at what price? With their desire to provide, most Filipino parents work more than one job, often too tired when they get home. They buy expensive equipment and games to keep the young ones occupied.

So children are left to their own devices, that sometimes lead them to seek attention from elsewhere, often from “bad” friends. Lacking parental guidance, their young minds absorb whatever is popular, although not necessarily right, to get a sense of belonging. Guess where these situations will lead to.

Is this the future we want them to have?

Jeffrey’s story has been told before, no doubt it will happen again with a different voice, a different face. But it’s not too late to try to prevent that story from unfolding.

official ballots have been printed by the National Printing Office (NPO) for the May 10, 2010 automated national and local elections. The NPO said each printing machine can print an average of more than 200,000 ballots a day. Another printing machine expected to arrive anytime to augment the printing process is set to be acquired by the Smartmatic-Total Information Management (TIM).

What religion do you ascribe to? Christianity? Judaism?

Islam? Hinduism? Buddhism? Paganism? Shamanism? Totemism? Animism?

Which God (or Goddess,

for that matter) do you believe in? Yahweh? Allah? Vishnu? Ganesha? Odin? Sedna? Haámyeda’r? Bathala?

The teachings of what religious text do you based your

life on? The Christian Bible? The Qur’an? The Vedas? The Sutras? The Satanic Bible? The Zohar?

Religious texts, also known as scriptures, are the texts which various religious traditions consider to be sacred or of central importance to their respective religious tradition. Many religions and spiritual movements regard their sacred texts as infallible

because they believe that these are divinely or supernaturally inspired; and whoever disagrees with this they usually dismiss as an infidel, heretic, evil, or—worse—their enemy.

I have a friend who doesn’t believe that scriptures are sacred in the sense that they are divinely or supernaturally inspired. He doesn’t believe that these books are holy records of historical data. Instead, he considers them to be intricate works of literature written by anonymous authors. He treats these the way he treats the classic works of authors like Ovid, Dumas, Shakespeare, and Tolkien—well-written, imaginative, and full of insights revolving around the universal theme of good versus evil. He doesn’t believe that God was the original author of such sacred books, because he believes that God is a mere personification of an omnipotent, omniscient, and omnipresent energy. Ultimately, he believes that God did not create humankind; he says that it’s the other way around.

Sadly, to many religious fanatics and self-declared people of God or of whatever deity, my friend is an infidel, heretic, evil, and ultimately, a most-hated enemy. Very ironic! How such scripture-loving people could hate others so much just because the latter do not share their beliefs, when the central theme of such religious texts is supposed to be love, compassion, and understanding.

You may call my friend an atheist, a freethinker, or a free spirit—someone who rejects the

belief in the existence of deities; someone who holds that opinions should be formed on the basis of science, logic, and reason, and should not be influenced by authority, tradition, or any other dogma; someone who believes that no single faith, religion, nor God is absolute and true. And my respect and admiration goes to him for being honest, broadminded, well-read, and brave to express his own convictions; NOT to Him nor to those religious fanatics who are usually hypocrites and bigots who cannot accept or acknowledge the multiplicity of cultures and faiths and who do not practice what their sacred scriptures preach.

Can Someone with a Criminal Record Visit the U.S.?

Many people think that getting a pardon for past criminal behavior will

automatically allow them to enter the United States. There are those who also think that their having any criminal record will prevent them from traveling to the U.S. These are not true.

Can a pardon allow me to enter the U.S.?

A pardon is a process that, once completed, allows a person who was criminally convicted in the past to say that s/he has no criminal record. Pardons are useful to allow people to start new and to get a second chance. However, getting a Canadian pardon does not guarantee entry to the U.S.

I have had the chance to work with U.S. lawyers for clients who have Canadian pardons. Some of these lawyers say that pardons can actually be more of a problem.

Whether or not a person has a pardon, the U.S. still must assess if s/he can be allowed into the country. In order to do this, the U.S. sometimes need to review documents in connection with the criminal case. When a person gets a pardon, these documents are often “sealed.”

If you have committed a crime and do decide to get a pardon, please make sure you keep a copy of your

pardon application. The information in your pardon application may be needed to get you into the U.S. at a later date.

If I have a pardon, do I need to tell U.S. officials about my past criminal record?

Persons with pardons can legally state that they do not have a criminal record. However, when

asked questions by any official they should carefully listen to the question. If the person has been convicted of a crime, the chances are that s/he has been arrested. If asked whether s/he has ever been arrested, the truthful answer would be yes, even if s/he has a pardon.

Do all criminal records prevent me from entering the U.S.?

The short answer to this question is no. However, if you have any sort of criminal record, it is good to get it reviewed before you attempt to enter the U.S. If you do not, you risk being turned back at the border or airport.

I have a criminal record and/or a pardon, what should I do before I travel to the U.S.?

Before traveling to the U.S. or any other country, it is good to check the laws of that country to determine what their laws are. If you are unsure as to whether you would be allowed to enter another country, you should speak to a legal advisor of your choice before attempting entry.

In some cases that I have been involved with, I have requested U.S. lawyers to prepare submissions for persons to carry with them when they enter the U.S. explaining why they should be allowed into the U.S. despite their criminal record. In other cases, we have advised clients to speak to a U.S. lawyer to file a formal application to enter the U.S. beforehand.

to be our best choice moving forward but I have no faith that the NDP will fully recognize the potential of education investment without intensive pressure from the opposition parties.”

Liberal Deputy Leader, Kevin Lamoureux said he looks forward to his role as health critic and that he will build on the work that Gerrard had already done in holding the NDP accountable for increased wait times, doctor shortages, and bloated spending on RHA administration.

Lamoureux also said that he will focus his attention on spending smarter and improving the quality of health care services provided to Manitobans. Investing in the prevention of illnesses such as diabetes and front-end health care services, such as community clinics, will be of greatest importance.

A Pilgrimage to the Holy Land

Holy Land memories - soul-satisfying and blessed memories - linger on like

Bible images from childhood years. A pilgrimage to the Holy Land affords a unique opportunity to deepen one’s spiritual life and could be an experience of a lifetime.

The Holy Land is not only the old and new Jerusalem but also the many sacred and historical sites of the Promised Land dating back as far as 2000 BC.

Nestled among the Judean mountains, Jerusalem is the capital city of Israel. Located within the modern city of Jerusalem and surrounded by huge stone wall with

narrow cobblestone streets the Old City has been traditionally divided into Four Quarters: the Christian, Muslim, Jewish, and Armenian Quarters.

For the Jews the holiest place in Jerusalem is the Western Wall (Wailing Wall). You can place written prayers or petitions to the Almighty by pushing them into the cracks between the ancient wall stones. For the Muslims, it is the gold-gilded Dome of the Rock where believers say the Prophet Mohammed ascended to heaven. For the Christians it is the Church of the Holy Sepulchre atop where Jesus was crucified and buried. Perhaps the highlight of our trip is honouring the Passion of Christ and walking the “Via Dolorosa” (The Way of the Cross) held to be the path Jesus walked carrying the cross on the way to the Crucifixion at Calvary.

In Bethlehem is the Church of the Nativity built over the cave that marks the birthplace of Jesus with the

14-pointed silver Star of Bethlehem beneath the altar. Here we experienced ducking our heads as we entered the basilica through its very tiny door.

Associated with the acts in the life of our Lord is the Mount of Olives, a hill facing the old city of Jerusalem. The Church of the Pater Noster marks the site where Jesus taught his disciples of the Lord’s Prayer. At the foot of Mt. Olives is the Garden of Gethsemane where Jesus spent his last hours praying before he was betrayed and arrested. The Church of Agony enshrines the holy ground.

We strolled along the Shepherds’ Fields reminding us when the angel

appeared to the shepherds keeping watch over their flocks by night to announce the birth of the Messiah.

The spot is symbolized by the Chapel of the Shepherds in the form of a Bedouin tent.

Seeing 18 year-old male or female conscripts carrying M16s on public buses and many checkpoints, we travelled all over Israel. We marvelled seeing the mighty

Negev and Judean deserts, the ruins of Caesarea on the Mediterranean, the contested Golan Heights, the beautiful town of Haifa, and the resort city of Eilat in southwestern Israel.

We experienced floating on the waters of the Dead Sea, the lowest point on the earth’s surface. No living organisms can survive in its waters laden with salt and minerals. We found it impossible not to float - tried to sink but it was futile. We had so much fun covering our bodies with the dark mud found at the bottom of the sea believed to have medicinal and therapeutic benefits.

We had the opportunity to visit Tabgha, home of the miracle of the multiplication of loaves and fishes. The town has a breathtaking view of the Sea of Galilee, the largest freshwater lake in Israel. Situated on the north shore of Galilee is the small fishing village of Capernaum where Jesus first called his disciples after leaving Nazareth and later became

his home. It was on this northern shoreline of the lake that Jesus calmed down the storm and walked on its waters. Not far from Tabgha is the Mount of Beatitudes famous for the Sermont on the Mount.

We experienced Cana, location of the wedding feast where Jesus performed his first miracle by changing water into wine. Our marriage vow was renewed at the Church of Cana. After our baptism at the sacred Jordan River we proceeded to the oldest city in the world dating back from 7000 BC called Jericho, the city of palm trees. From here we viewed the barren and rocky Mount of Temptation where Jesus was tempted by Satan.

And lastly not to be missed is Mt. Tabor, an ancient mountain considered

Arnel Pineda’s rendition irks NHI

Journey rock band lead singer Arnel Pineda joins Charice Pempengco, Jennifer Bautista,

Christian Bautista, Martin Nievera, La Diva, Sarah Geronimo, Lani Misalucha, and Kyla not in a blockbuster concert, but in the growing list of performers criticized by the National Historical Institute (NHI) for the erroneous rendition of the Philippine National Anthem.

In Pineda’s case, NHI wants to elevate the reprimand further by contemplating on filing a case. The

incident took place when Pineda sang “Lupang Hinirang” at the Manny Pacquiao- Joshua Clottey world welterweight bout last March 14 in Dallas, Texas.

According to NHI, Pineda could face a fine ranging from P5,000 to P20,000 or jailed for a year, following Section 37 of Republic Act 8491, which states that that he national anthem must be sung in accordance with its original marching tempo as composed by Julian Felipe.

case, comparing the venues for the past seven consecutive Manny Pacquiao fights we attended, starting in 2007 vs. Marco Antonio Barrera. The Mandalay Bay Event Centre, which holds approximately 12,000 people, was our first PACMAN experience. Ostrich

The largest living bird is the ostrich, the male species of which can reach a weight of 155 kilograms. The long neck and legs keeps its head 1.8 to 2.75 meters above the ground. The ostrich also lays the largest egg

of any living bird. The elephant birds of Madagascar and giant

moa of New Zealand laid larger eggs, but these birds are already extinct. The flightless ostrich has a long neck and legs and the ability to run at maximum speeds of about 70 kilometers per hour (kph), making it also the fastest bird on land. Although native to Africa, ostriches have long been farmed around the world, particularly for their feathers, skin, and meat. Interestingly, ostrich farms can now be found in the Philippines, particularly in Nueva Ecija, Misamis Oriental, and General Santos City.

Emu

Native to Australia, the emu is the second-largest living bird by height, attaining a maximum height of two meters. It is distinct with its brown, soft, thick plumage. It can travel great distances at a speed reaching 50 kph. Emus are farmed for their meat, oil, and leather. They are common over most of mainland Australia, although they avoid dense forest and heavily populated and arid areas.

RheaThe rhea is another

large flightless bird. It

can grow as tall as 1.7 meters and weigh up to 40 kilograms. Native to South America, it has gray-brown plumage, long legs, and a long neck similar to that of the ostrich. When running, it usually spread its large wings which act as sails. Just like ostriches and emus, rheas are also used for their feathers, skins, and meat.

CassowaryAnother large flightless

bird is the cassowary, which is native to the tropical forests of New Guinea, nearby islands, and northeastern Australia. It is distinct from other flightless birds with its hard and stiff black plumage, blue facial skin, casque on top of the head, and a brightly colored neck and wattle/s hanging down

its throat. Females are bigger and more brightly colored, attaining a height of two meters and a weight of 58.5 kilograms.

After being sworn in as the new Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces of the

Philippines (AFP), Lt. Gen. Delfin Bangit declared: “I will allow only God to use me.” President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, who was seated next to him, was smiling when he said that, after all Gloria is treated like a “Czarina” by her underlings. Yup, she’s the Czarina of the “Enchanted Kingdom.”

Bangit used to be Gloria’s spy master when he was head of the Intelligence Service of the AFP. He used the code name “Emperor” in his cloak-and-dagger work. In 2006, he hosted a lavish Christmas party where he threw bills as the merrymakers chanted, “Long live the emperor!” Makes one wonder how much a spy master earns spying on people.

The Czarina gave her first order to the Emperor: “Suppress insurgency before my term ends on June 30.” “That’s impossible, ma’am,” the Emperor protested. “How can I suppress in three months an insurgency that has been going on for more than 50 years? That’s a very tight deadline you’re giving me, ma’am. You only have three months left in your presidency!” The Czarina responded, “Gago! I’m going to be Prime Minister after that. Do you have any problems with that?” The Emperor quivered. “No, ma’am. Your wish is my command, ma’am,” the Emperor replied and then bowed his head down.

The Emperor told the media

later, “The reason why I have so much respect for President Arroyo is because after all these years, never have I received illegal orders from her.” Not yet. Just wait, it will come at the opportune time.

Meanwhile, Sister Mary John Mananzan -- who is co-chair of the Major Religious Superiors of the Philippines -- suspects that the “Emperor” may have been appointed to rig the May 10 elections. She mentioned a code name for the alleged plot -- “Project Full Moon.” She said it involves the hacking of the Automated Election System (AES) which will be used for the first time on May 10.

The plot thickens… It was also reported in the news that Sister Mary John said that she received an anonymous text message saying the Emperor may have been appointed to aid an administration cheating scheme. She passed the message to Henrietta De Villa of the Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting (PPCRV), a Catholic Church-backed election monitor. Father Jose Dizon of the Kontra Daya (anti-fraud) multi-sector poll watchdog also expressed concerns about the Emperor’s appointment. He said, “It exacerbates fears that the AFP will again be used to cheat,” as he alleged Gloria did in the 2004 elections. Well, it looks like the “Garci boys” are still around to do their dirty work.

In the news… “President Arroyo encouraged foreign observers to come to the country

and monitor the May 10 elections as she vowed that her greatest legacy would be ensuring honest and orderly polls.” Hmmm… And I thought that her greatest legacy was the “Hello Garci” election cheating in 2004? It changed the way elections are fought in the future; that is, survival of the “cheatest.”

Then she said, “For myself, I will be staying out of the election process. I will trust the Commission on Elections to ensure the new voting machines work, the votes are protected and counted and the results are delivered in rapid manner to the satisfaction of voters.” Yup, just like in 2004 she stayed out of the election process and just let the “Garci boys” and her generals do the work for her.

A few days ago, I received this unaccredited story: The Philippine Postal System has created a new stamp displaying a picture of Gloria Arroyo. However, Gloria was told that the stamp was not sticking to envelopes. Enraged, Gloria demanded a full investigation by a special commission After a month of testing and spending P8 million, the special commission presented the following findings: (1) The stamp is in perfect order, (2) There is nothing wrong with the adhesive, and (3) People are spitting on the wrong side of the stamp.

Pastor Apollo Quiboloy, head of a sect called “Kingdom of Jesus Christ, the Name Above Every Name,” was fuming mad when presidential candidates Noynoy Aquino and Manny Villar didn’t show up at the “lawyers and businessmen’s forum” he organized in Davao City. Pastor Q, as he’s called by his six million followers, called Noynoy and Villar as men with “no word of honor.” Noynoy apologized and explained that he had a cold. Villar also apologized and explained that he had a “hundred reasons” why he skipped the forum. One of these reasons could be that Villar got cold feet about facing the lawyers and businessmen who might be asking too many questions about his involvement in the C-5, Savannah, Norzagaray, and San Pedro scandals. Yup, that would be more than enough to deep-six “Money Villarroyo,” as Villar is called by some people who believe that he is Gloria’s “secret candidate.”

With Noynoy and Villar out of Pastor Q’s good graces, Erap Estrada, Gibo Teodoro, and Bro. Eddie Villanueva are still hoping to get Pastor Q’s endorsement and three million “command votes.” Pastor Q -- who bandies himself as the “Appointed Son of God” -- said that God revealed to him in 2004

Meanwhile, it was reported in the news that the Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting (PPCRV) showed that Pastor Q’s name was among some 40,000 voters entered as “double, multiple, or dead registrants” in Davao City and Davao del Sur alone. Interestingly, PPCRV showed that “two voters were registered as Apollo Carreon Quiboloy with the same birthday on April 25, 1950.” One resides in Barangay Buhangin Poblacion and the other supposedly resides in Barangay Tamayong. It’s not clear though if Pastor Q was the same person registered twice.

A lawyer pointed out “that the estimated 40,000 bogus entries on the Davao voters’ list could ‘make or break a local election.’ Assuming that such a number also existed in other provinces, he said the total could reach more than three million votes nationwide, which would be enough to manipulate the results of even the presidential race.” Now, I can see the big picture. It could be 2004 all over again. The question is: which presidential candidate would benefit from this potential “massive election cheating operation?” Is this part of “Project Full Moon”? If so, who is behind all this? Abangan!

Kanya-kanyang tuligsa at suhestiyon mula sa ilang mga nandoon. Karamihan e positibo naman, pero hindi talaga maiiwasan na sa ganoong mga pagpapalit-kurukuro e nagkakainitan din. Meron ding mga iilang tao na para bang walang pinag-aralan at pinagkatandaan, kasi puwede namang ipahayag ang kanilang mga opinyon sa mahinahon at maayos na paraan, pero ayun sila at tila ba galit na galit sa mundo at pasigaw at pagalit kung magsalita

at minsan ay personal na ang kanilang mga tinuturan.

Kasama namin si Tito George, at nabanggit niya sa amin na kilala niya raw ang iilan sa mga taong tila ba galit sa mundo. Bulong sa akin ni Tito George, marami draw sa mga ito e magaling lang manuligsa at mamuna pero kulang naman daw sa gawa. Kapag ganyang balitaktakan lang daw mabibilis, pero kapag kinailangan na ang tulong e hindi na mahagilap.

Okay naman sana magbigay ng opinyon at suhestiyon, pero sana naman ay subukan ding kumilos at makibahagi kapag oras na ng bayanihan.

Hightops, Ballerz and W5 are Lipenos Basketball ChampionsMen’s Open Champion still to be crowned.

In Lipenos Basketball season end championships, Hightops, Ballerz and W5 take the crown from their respective divisions. In the Juvenille division, Hightops

defeated West Alexander Technologies. Ballerz won against Scerbo Formals in the Senior Division and in the Ladies Division, W5 claimed the championship by defeating Versatile.

In Men’s Open Division, game two of the three-game championship series between So Smooth/UMac and Hightops continues on Sunday, March 27 at 5:30pm at Daniel MacIntyre. Game 1 went to So Smooth/Umac.

Sudoku Puzzles are games of patience, numbers and genius! The satisfaction of solving a challenging Sudoku Puzzle is one of the greatest accomplishments any sudoku game player can experience.

So what is Sudoku? Pronounced [su:doku], Sudoku is the Japaneseabbreviation of “the digits remain single”. In Japan Sudoku is sometimes referred to as “Number Place” and can be spelt “Su Doku”. Sodoku originated in Japan and was designed by Howard Garns. The Sudoku Game was first published in New York in 1979 and was likely inspired by a game called Latin Square.

Each Sudoku has a unique solution that can be reached logically without guessing. Enter digits from 1 to 9 into the blank spaces. Every row must contain one of each digit. So must every column, as must every 3x3 square.

Get Involved in the Spring Cleanup DriveTime to cleanup. It’s Springtime!

The following bits of information are the city’s cleanup services this

spring. In addition, there are many organizations that take part in our program by initiating community spring-cleanup drives. Hence, I encourage all Winnipeggers to do their part in cleaning our city. Cleanup drives can be enjoying if collectively done with family members and friends.

To all those who are interested to be part of your community’s cleanup drive, please contact your nearest community center or school.

The street cleaning program provides a healthy and safe environment for the citizens of Winnipeg by protecting water quality, by preventing damage to regional and residential pavements, and by minimizing the burden of debris entering the storm sewer system.Spring Cleanup

Spring cleanup activities involve removing the build-up of

street debris that collects during the winter months.

• Streets – All streets should be cleaned. Spring cleanup begins after the snow and ice has melted. Spring cleanup program start dates are announced through the media. • Boulevards – Sweeping boulevards begins when there are no frozen or wet boulevard surfaces or approximately two to three weeks after street sweeping begins. • Sidewalks – The sidewalks in the downtown area from Broadway to Ellice Avenue and from Main Street to Memorial Boulevard are cleaned on a regular basis, but not on the same schedule as street cleaning. Due to safety factors and the extra care that must be taken when sweeping around pedestrian traffic on the walks, the sidewalk sweeping process takes longer than the street cleaning process.

Parking BanStreet cleaning services

protect and enhance the livability of Winnipeg. Therefore, motorists are reminded to watch for temporary no parking signs. These signs are placed well in advance of sweeping operations and indicate the hours of prohibited parking. Vehicles parked in violation may be ticketed and towed at the owner’s expense. If your vehicle has been towed:

• If your vehicle was parked on the street prior to the placement of temporary no parking signs and has been towed

away, please check the next street over and/or around the corner for your vehicle or contact 311 for assistance.

• If you parked your vehicle on the street after the placement of temporary no parking signs, contact Dr. Hook Towing Services at 956-4665. • Note: More than 1,600 vehicles were ticketed and towed in 2007.

The following information offers overviews of the primary activities of the street cleaning program.

Spring Cleanup • Annual program, running four to five weeks beginning in mid-April depending on weather conditions. • Initial focus is on the Downtown Square (bounded by Broadway/Ellice/Memorial and Main from Higgins to Assiniboine. Followed by effort on the balance of the regional street system. • Sweeping on regional streets takes place at night.

• Daytime sweeping focuses on collector and residential streets. • Cleanup of boulevards in residential areas is limited to areas with excessive sand. o Call 311 to request an inspection of a boulevard if it appears there is an excessive amount of debris or abrasives.

Did you know?o Up to 200 pieces of equipment and 500 staff participate. o Budget for spring clean-up is in the millions of dollars. o Approximately 45,000 tonnes of aggregate (from winter ice control) removed. o Water is sprayed onto the streets to control dust. Back Lane Sweeping Programo Paved back lanes are swept once a year o Begins after streets are swept in spring

Regular Cleanup• After spring cleanup is completed, Regional streets are swept once a week at night time. • Regional streets in Downtown Square are flushed once a week and swept three times a week. • From June to October, sidewalks in Downtown Square are flushed once a week.

Litter Control Paper Picking• Manual removal of litter from street right-of-way. • Emptying and disposal of litter from litter containers in the Downtown Square, the City’s parks and other designated areas. • The City does not provide new containers or collect litter at any additional/new containers due to limited funding in the operating budget.

The Filipino communities are growing in Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver & Winnipeg. More & more events being passed along our way, we are looking to complement our team with volunteer photographers to cover all those events.

As with any community newspaper, we focus on local events such as community gatherings, picnics, sporting events, press conferences, dinners. Some gigs can be as quick as 15-20 minutes and other can be long, painful & boring. Our goal is to find photographers that we can assign work to on any given story. The majority of the events are during the evenings and weekend.

The Alternative Rock Explosionof the ’90s

Part 2: Indie Rock

Perhaps the term Indie Rock was coined just to differentiate less fuzzy and

more melodic Alternative Rock songs from typical Grunge, which is generally characterized by a guitar sound that uses a high level of distortion, fuzz, and feedback effects and by growling and angst-filled vocal parts—especially that both genres originated from the same roots—Punk Rock, New Wave, and Postpunk.

Characteristics and OriginWhereas Grunge is best

characterized by fuzzy and distortion-heavy guitars and angst-filled vocals, Indie Rock is more melodic and its theme and the quality of the vocal tracks more gloomy and sad than angry and desperate. Bands whose music is classified as Indie Rock

usually draw their influences more from New Wave and Postpunk than from Punk and Metal. Some musicologists even say that Indie Rock is a continuity of New Wave and Postpunk. Prominent Indie Rock Bands

Originated in the ’80s, Indie Rock became commercial in the ’90s; but it remained second only to the popularity of Grunge during that decade. Despite this, many bands regarded as Indie Rock became as popular and more influential than Grunge bands like Nirvana and Pearl Jam. Some of the best-known Indie Rock bands that peaked in the ’90s are Sonic Youth, The Lemonheads, Pixies, Smashing Pumpkins, Toad the Wet Sprocket, Gin Blossoms, and Soul Asylum. Final Note

Advancing Peace StudiesNew joint Master of Arts degree in Peace and Conflict Studies a go

WINNIPEG, MB – Students who want to obtain advanced

degrees in peace and conflict studies will be able to pursue a new Masters of Arts program in Manitoba effective September 2010.

The new, joint Master of Arts in Peace and Conflict Studies, which has been in the works for several years, is a partnership between The University of Winnipeg and the University of Manitoba.

Winnipeg has now joined Washington, DC as the only cities in North America to offer a Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctoral program in peace and conflict studies.

Dr. Joanne Keselman, Vice-President (Academic) and Provost at the University of Manitoba, said: “This new program builds on academic strengths at the University of Manitoba and enables us to devote new resources to this important field of study. As outlined in its Strategic Planning Framework, the University of Manitoba is committed to encouraging debate and discussion around the understanding of human rights, peace and justice and respect for others. In collaboration with

our colleagues we aim to make Manitoba the preeminent centre for peace and conflict studies in Canada.”

“This is a significant addition to our academic repertoire because until now, students in Manitoba could only obtain a BA and a PhD in this field. Now we are linking that journey with this new Masters degree,” said Dr. Sandra Kirby, Associate VP (Research) and Dean of Graduate Studies, UWinnipeg. “With the new Canadian Human Rights Museum at the Forks, we see this as an important synergy that allows us to keep building an academic base that complements Winnipeg’s emerging reputation as an international human rights city.”

The peace and conflict studies’ research priorities will include the analysis and resolution of protracted ethno-political conflicts, Indigenous approaches to peacemaking, gender, conflict and peace building, peace education, children and war in the context of human rights and human security.

At The University of Winnipeg, the new MA program is coordinated by Marilou McPhedran, Principal of Global College, which offers Western Canada’s first BA in Human

Rights and Global Studies. In partnership with Menno Simons College, UWinnipeg also offers a BA in Conflict Resolution Studies and a BA in International Development Studies.

The Arthur V. Mauro Centre at St. Paul’s College, University of Manitoba, is dedicated to the advancement of human rights, conflict resolution, global citizenship, peace, and social justice through research, education, and outreach. The Centre is home to the PhD Program in Peace and Conflict Studies; the joint MA Program in Peace and Conflict Studies is governed by the University of Manitoba and The University of Winnipeg, housed at the Mauro Centre and Global College.

store, Lucky Supermarket welcomed hundreds of shoppers during their official grand opening with traditional lion dance entertainment and gift give-aways.

Edmonton based grocer, Lucky Supermarket opened in February with thier new 32,000 sq ft retail supermarket featuring hot food counter service, full service meat department and a wide range of Asian food products, fruits and vegetables.
