and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

THE FIRST READING: ACTS 5:27-32 Reader: When the temple police had brought the apostles, they had them stand before the

council. The high priest questioned them, saying, "We gave you strict orders not to teach in this

name, yet here you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching and you are determined to bring this

man's blood on us." But Peter and the apostles answered, "We must obey God rather than any

human authority. The God of our ancestors raised up Jesus, whom you had killed by hanging

him on a tree. God exalted him at his right hand as Leader and Savior that he might give

repentance to Israel and forgiveness of sins. And we are witnesses to these things, and so is the

Holy Spirit whom God has given to those who obey him."

4 Praise him with timbrel and dance; *

praise him with strings and pipe.

5 Praise him with resounding cymbals; *

praise him with loud-clanging cymbals.

6 Let everything that has breath *

praise the Lord. Hallelujah!

THE SECOND READING: Revelation 1:4-8 Reader: John to the seven churches that are in Asia: Grace to you and peace from him who is and who was

and who is to come, and from the seven spirits who are before his throne, and from Jesus Christ, the faithful

witness, the firstborn of the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth.

To him who loves us and freed us from our sins by his blood, and made us to be a kingdom, priests serving

his God and Father, to him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.

Look! He is coming with the clouds; every eye will see him, even those who pierced him; and on his account

all the tribes of the earth will wail. So it is to be. Amen. "I am the Alpha and the Omega," says the Lord God,

who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.

Reader: Hear what the Spirit is saying to God’s people.

People: Thanks be to God.

SEQUENCE O for a thousand tongues to sing Hymnal 493 (1-3) Please stand.

Gospeller: The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John.

People: Glory be to thee, O Lord.

THE HOLY GOSPEL: John 20:19-31 Gospeller: When it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and the doors of the

house where the disciples had met were locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among

Page 4: Fifth Sunday in Lent April 28, 2019 8:30 a.m. & …images.acswebnetworks.com/1/3053/095322_042819_BLTN_830...Our ushers will be at the doors to the Nave to assist you. Children: Worship

them and said, "Peace be with you." After he said this, he showed them his hands and his side.

Then the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, "Peace be with you.

As the Father has sent me, so I send you." When he had said this, he breathed on them and said

to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you

retain the sins of any, they are retained."

But Thomas (who was called the Twin), one of the twelve, was not with them when Jesus came.

So the other disciples told him, "We have seen the Lord." But he said to them, "Unless I see the

mark of the nails in his hands, and put my finger in the mark of the nails and my hand in his side,

I will not believe."

A week later his disciples were again in the house, and Thomas was with them. Although the

doors were shut, Jesus came and stood among them and said, "Peace be with you." Then he said

to Thomas, "Put your finger here and see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it in my side.

Do not doubt but believe." Thomas answered him, "My Lord and my God!" Jesus said to him,

"Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet

have come to believe."

Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this

book. But these are written so that you may come to believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of

God, and that through believing you may have life in his name.

Gospeller: The Gospel of the Lord.

People: Praise be to thee, O Christ.

THE SERMON The Rev. Dr. Ron Taylor

~ (Silence follows the Sermon) ~

THE NICENE CREED 326 We believe in one God,

the Father, the Almighty,

maker of heaven and earth,

of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,

the only Son of God,

eternally begotten of the Father,

God from God, Light from Light,

true God from true God,

begotten, not made,

of one Being with the Father.

Through him all things were made.

For us and for our salvation

he came down from heaven:

Page 5: Fifth Sunday in Lent April 28, 2019 8:30 a.m. & …images.acswebnetworks.com/1/3053/095322_042819_BLTN_830...Our ushers will be at the doors to the Nave to assist you. Children: Worship

5

by the power of the Holy Spirit

he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary,

and was made man.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate:

he suffered death and was buried.

On the third day he rose again

in accordance with the Scriptures;

he ascended into heaven

and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,

and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,

who proceeds from the Father and the Son.

With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified.

He has spoken through the prophets.

We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.

We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.

We look for the resurrection of the dead,

and the life of the world to come. Amen.

THE HOLY COMMUNION

THE OFFERTORY

HYMN Doxology Old 100th

Praise God from whom all blessings flow,

Praise Him all creatures here below,

Praise Him above ye heavenly hosts,

Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.

THE BIDDING PRAYER Celebrant: This is the table, not of the Church, but of God.

It is made ready for all.

So, come, you who have much faith and you who have little,

You who have been here often and you who have not been here long,

You who have tried to follow and those who struggle to find the path.

Come, because it is God who invites you.

It is God’s will that those who desire to do so should meet God here.

THE GREAT THANKSGIVING (Eucharistic Prayer C) 369 Celebrant: The Lord be with you.

People: And also with you.

Celebrant: Lift up your hearts.

People: We lift them to the Lord.

Celebrant: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

People: It is right to give him thanks and praise.

Then, facing the Holy Table, the Celebrant proceeds

Celebrant: God of all power, Ruler of the Universe, you are worthy of glory and praise.

People: Glory to you for ever and ever.

Celebrant: At your command all things came to be: the vast expanse of interstellar space,

galaxies, suns, the planets in their courses, and this fragile earth, our island home.

People: By your will they were created and have their being.

Celebrant: From the primal elements you brought forth the human race, and blessed us

with memory, reason, and skill. You made us the rulers of creation. But we

turned against you, and betrayed your trust; and we turned against one another.

People: Have mercy, Lord, for we are sinners in your sight.

Celebrant: Again and again, you called us to return. Through prophets and sages you

revealed your righteous Law. And in the fullness of time you sent your only Son,

born of a woman, to fulfill your Law, to open for us the way of freedom and peace.

People: By his blood, he reconciled us.

By his wounds, we are healed.

Celebrant: And therefore we praise you, joining with the heavenly chorus, with prophets,

apostles, and martyrs, and with all those in every generation who have looked to

you in hope, to proclaim with them your glory, in their unending hymn:

SANCTUS S-129

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might,

heaven and earth are full of your glory.

Hosanna in the highest.

Page 8: Fifth Sunday in Lent April 28, 2019 8:30 a.m. & …images.acswebnetworks.com/1/3053/095322_042819_BLTN_830...Our ushers will be at the doors to the Nave to assist you. Children: Worship

8

Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.

Hosanna in the highest.

The people stand or kneel.

Celebrant: And so, Father, we who have been redeemed by him, and made a new people by water

and the Spirit, now bring before you these gifts. Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be the Body and Blood

of Jesus Christ our Lord.

On the night he was betrayed he took bread, said the blessing, broke the bread, and gave it to his friends,

and said, "Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me."

After supper, he took the cup of wine, gave thanks, and said, "Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the

new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do

this for the remembrance of me."

Remembering now his work of redemption, and offering to you this sacrifice of thanksgiving,

Celebrant and People: We celebrate his death and resurrection,

as we await the day of his coming.

Celebrant: Lord God of our Fathers and Mothers: God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, Sarah,

Rachel, and Rebekah; God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ: Open our eyes to see your hand at

work in the world about us. Deliver us from the presumption of coming to this Table for solace

only, and not for strength; for pardon only, and not for renewal. Let the grace of this Holy

Communion make us one body, one spirit in Christ, that we may worthily serve the world in his

name.

People: Risen Lord, be known to us in the breaking of the Bread.

Celebrant: Accept these prayers and praises, Father, through Jesus Christ our great High

Priest, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, your Church gives honor, glory, and worship,

from generation to generation.

People: AMEN. Danish 3-fold

Celebrant: And now, as our Savior As our Savior Christ

Christ has taught us, has taught us,

we are bold to say, we now pray,

THE LORD’S PRAYER 364

Our Father, who art in heaven,

hallowed be thy Name,

thy kingdom come,

thy will be done,

on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our trespasses,

as we forgive those

who trespass against us.

And His grace forever.

May the Lord, Mighty Lord

Bless and keep us forever.

And lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom,

and the power, and the glory,

for ever and ever. Amen.

People: Therefore let us keep the feast.

A Word From Rev. Dr. Ron Taylor

The Assurance of God’s Love The invitation is both awesome and terrifying: “Reach out your hand,” Jesus says to Thomas, the Thomas who would not believe. The invitation is ours as well. Reach out – touch – and be touched. Despite shattered dreams, despite grief, become touched by God, whose healing power is manifested in the glorious but still scarred body of the Risen Lord. Be touched by the power of Resurrection. Know, once and for all, that the promise of wholeness and new life is meant for you. Sometimes we may be unsure about whether God continues to bless and guide our lives. In the promise of Easter, we can see the evidence of resurrection in the world around us. Christ’s Resurrection reveals itself through our lives of grace – in the healing of those who are sick, in the promise we hold out to the dying, in the small, ordinary blessings of each day, and in the way we love and serve one another. Jesus’ resurrection invites us to look beyond the conflicts, fears, and failures of today to the promise of tomorrow. Like Thomas, we long for a lasting presence, for the assurance of God’s love and grace, for the power of the Risen Christ in our lives. “Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have come to believe.” Yes, the promise of wholeness and new life flowers daily before us – and blessed are we who believe in the simple signs of God’s love. (The Rev. Dr. Don Armentrout – Synthesis) Faithfully,

Father Ron
