This is a general overview of all science stations in each UNIT BUNDLE

Properties of Matter

Science StationsNext Generation Science Standards are written to be ldquoThree Dimensionalrdquo The following section explains how this set of science stations addresses the three dimensions of Performance Expectation Disciplinary Core Idea and Science and Engineering PracticesCrosscutting Concepts

In Fifth Grade students are expected to demonstrate understanding in the following area 5-PS1-3 Make observations and measurements to identify materials based on their properties [Clarification Statement Examples of materials to be identified could include baking soda and other powders metals minerals and liquids Examples of properties could include color hardness reflectivity electrical conductivity thermal conductivity response to magnetic forces and solubility density is not intended as an identifiable property] [Assessment Boundary Assessment does not include density or distinguishing mass and weight]

This correlates with the DCIs 5-PS1A which state PS1A Structure and Properties of Matter Measurements of a variety of properties can be used to identify materials (Boundary At this grade level mass and weight are not distinguished and no attempt is made to define the unseen particles or explain the atomic-scale mechanism of evaporation and condensation)

All stations in this set meet the DCI helping students to identify materials based on their chemical and physical properties of matter

Science and Engineering Practices Planning and Carrying Out Investigations Planning and carrying out investigations to answer questions or test solutions to problems in 3ndash5 builds on Kndash2 experiences and progresses to include investigations that control variables and provide evidence to support explanations or design solutions

bullMake observations and measurements to produce data to serve as the basis for evidence for an explanation of a phenomenon

Crosscutting Concepts Scale Proportion and Quantity

bullStandard units are used to measure and describe physical quantities such as weight time temperature and volume

NGSS Standards Overview

Specific to the Properties of Matter Unit BUNDLE Special Note None of these stations give an exhaustive list of all the chemical andor physical properties of matter Knowing all of the types of properties is not important especially at this level What is important is being able to distinguish between between physical properties of matter and chemical properties of matter Physical properties of matter are those properties that can be observed and measured without changing the substance Chemical properties of matter on the other hand can only be observed and measured by changing the substance

As a Fifth Grade Performance Expectation students are expected to ldquoMake observations and measurements to identify materials based on their propertiesrdquo (5-PS1-3) This correlates with the DCI 5-PS1A which states ldquoMeasurements of a variety of properties can be used to identify materials (Boundary At this grade level mass and weight are not distinguished and no attempt is made to define the unseen particles or explain the atomic-scale mechanism of evaporation and condensation)rdquo All stations in this set meet the Performance Expectation and DCI helping students gain an understanding of how materials can be identified based on chemical and physical properties of matter

The Investigation and Model Stations meet the Science and Engineering Practice of ldquoPlanning and Carrying Out Investigationsrdquo In the Investigation Station students use known information about chemical and physical properties of matter to identify an unknown substance In the Model Station students conduct an investigation about several chemical and physical substances In a similar but much more in-depth investigation they combine their data with class data to determine the identity of a mystery substance

The Investigate and Model Stations can be used in conjunction with Science Station Set 5-PS1-4 (Chemical Reactions)

The Investigate and Model Stations investigate topics also covered in 5-PS1-4 Chemical Reactions The focus of the stations in this unit is that materials can be identified by their physical and chemical properties The focus of 5-PS1-4 is that when two or more substances are mixed they sometimes form new substances This is an example of a chemical change which takes place because of the materialrsquos specific chemical properties

Science Stations

copy Jessica Boschen amp Jill Elliott bull What I Have Learned
