In Fifth Grade students are expected to demonstrate understanding in the following area 5-LS1-1 Support an argument that plants get the materials they need for growth chiefly from air and water [Clarification Statement Emphasis is on the idea that plant matter comes mostly from air and water not from the soil]
This correlates with the DCI 5-LS1C which states LS1C Organization for Matter and Energy Flow in Organisms Plants acquire their material for growth chiefly from air and water
All stations in this set meet the DCI helping students gain an understanding of how the material that plants need in order to grow is acquired chiefly from air and water

NGSS Standards Overview
Specific to the Plant Growth Unit BUNDLE As a Fifth Grade Performance Expectation students are expected to ldquoSupport an argument that plants get the materials they need for growth chiefly from air and waterrdquo (5-LS1-1) This correlates with the DCI 5-LS1C which states ldquoPlants acquire their material for growth chiefly from air and waterrdquo All stations in this set meet the Performance Expectation and DCIs helping students gain an understanding of how substances such as carbon dioxide water and other nutrients enter the plant from the air and water supplying all the needed material for plant growth This Performance Expectation 5-LS1-1 is concerned with what plants need to grow and what are the necessary materials for plant growth to happen Students will be learning about the biological processes of photosynthesis as part of the scope of this PE including the flow of energy in the form of sugar through the plant plant tissue growth and maintenance etc This Station Set correlates with the Station Set 5-PS3-1 (Energy For Life) in which students learn about the chemical processes of photosynthesis including how energy from the sun is converted to chemical energy in plants In the Station Set 5-LS2-1 (Food Webs) students will learn the biological aspects of energy transfer from the sun through various organisms and back into the ecosystem
This Science Station can be used in conjunction with 5-PS1-4 Chemical Reactions
For more in-depth learning about energy conversions and the Law of Conservation of Energy check out the 4-PS3 (Energy) Science Stations
The Investigate Station offers an extension that meets the following Engineering Standard ETS1-3 Optimizing the Design Solution
The Investigate Diagram Model and Explore Stations meet the Science and Engineering Practice of ldquoEngaging in Argument from Evidencerdquo as students develop arguments from their observations about the materials needed for a plant to grow

5-LS1-1
