WELCOME & INDEX

A warm welcome to our Summer programme of shows & eventsThose of you who have been customers of ours for some time may have noticed the improvements to our online booking system. We have had a lot of positive feedback on the changes, with customers saying it is easier and quicker to navigate through and to book tickets. Also, if you decide to have the tickets emailed to you, or collected from the box offi ce, then there are no additional fees to the advertised ticket price.

Children’s shows continue to be very popular and in this season we have The Snail & the Whale plus a summer run of the West End production of The Gruffalo. Our Summer Musical Theatre Workshops are also on sale.

The outrageous Lee Nelson makes a welcome return after achieving a certain notoriety when he handed Theresa May a P45 at last year’s Tory Conference.

Musical evenings include tributes to Barry White, Ella Fitzgerald and Whitney Houston. We also have the genuine legend that is Marty Wilde with his Wildcats.

Please also remember to book your tickets for our wonderful family pantomime, Aladdin. We already have many performances that are sold out as this is one of our most popular pantomime titles.

If you would like to comment on any aspect of our service or programme, please do not hesitate to contact me on [email protected]

Radlett Art Society Presents Stanhope Forbes: A Fish Sale on a Cornish Beach Lecturer: Alan Read BA MITG

The painting “A Fish Sale on a Cornish Beach” by Stanhope Forbes exhibited to popular and critical acclaim at the Royal Academy in 1885 established Forbes’ reputation. It encouraged other artists to join him, leading to the establishment of the Newlyn School. It is his best known painting and illustrates the interest in local people and sense of realism typical of Newlyn painting.

JUNE Fri June 1 – Sat 30 June

In the Ground Floor Gallery, Gary Perlmutter returns. His exhibition displays a collection of images, from landscapes to the depiction of life on the streets of London, as seen through his lens. New for this year look out for his collection of ‘Toy effect’ images.

Annette Kelly presents her first exhibition in the Apthorp Gallery, which explores natural beauty. Annette is a local artist specialising in acrylic painting using bold, vibrant and beautiful colours. She uses techniques like dabbing, dragging the brush, scraping and sliding the palette knife.

JULY Mon 2 July – Tues 31 July

Julia Holt presents The End of Something Beautiful, and So it Begins…, in the Ground Floor Gallery. Her large scale work is mixed media on paper and is developed from the drawings of the bones of a horse. Her small scale works are mixed media on paper and take a much lighter view of daily life!

Esperanza Walsh is a self-taught, London-based, visionary artist who shares her thoughts and insights through her art and displays her work in the Apthorp Gallery for the first time. Watercolour is her primary medium which she, in her own experience, finds to be very meditative, therapeutic and immersive.

AUGUST Weds 1 Aug – Fri 31 Aug

Chris Bloomfield returns to the Ground Floor Gallery, this time with a solo exhibition entitled ‘Twilight’. This represents a selection of photographic images taken at the time of day between Day and Night. His intention is to try and convey a sense of obscurity, melancholy and entropy.

Upstairs in the Apthorp Gallery, Seonaid Parnell presents her first exhibition at The Radlett Centre, entitled The Colour of Water. This is a collection of loose, transparent watercolours inspired by nature, wildlife and other subjects. It celebrates the beauty, freshness and vibrancy of the medium.

SEPTEMBER Sat 1 Sept – Sat 29 Sept

The Ground Floor Gallery hosts a return visit from Judith Kelly who brings a print exhibition of images taken of south east Iceland. The exhibition is a stimulating mix of landscapes and abstracts of recent digital images, together with a selection taken on film some time ago.

In the Apthorp Gallery, Amy Pettingill exhibits for the first time. She has developed her own unique signature style in vibrant and playful acrylic paintings. Amy finds colour in everything. A slight hint of lilac in the dullest concrete turns to bright purple.

Radlett Art Society Presents The Wild Beasts Of 1905 – Fauve & French Impressionists

Lecturer: Frank Woodgate BA

The Fauves ("wild beasts") were a group of allied French painters with shared interests that proved to be a precursor to Cubism and Expressionism as well as a touchstone for future modes of abstraction. One major contribution to modern art was using intense colour to describe light and space, redefining pure colour and form to communicate with the artist’s emotional state, separating colour from its basic purpose, allowing it to exist on canvas as an independent element.
