MayorFrankel’sStateoftheCityisaHomerun-HankAaronSurpriseSpecialGuestAddressing an enthusiastic crowd of over 750 business and community leaders, Mayor Frankel delivered her annual State of the City address on January 13, presented by Grand Bank & Trust of Florida. Mayor Frankel asked the community to believe and then act on projects which will uplift the City both socially and economically.

Citing two recent successes, City Center and the new West Palm Beach waterfront (which will be officially opening on Saturday, February 20), she reminded the audience of her belief that the downtown could be revitalized and that the intracoastal could be made open to the public as a word-class attraction. The Mayor announced the next major undertaking – the transformation of the Coleman Park neighborhood, where more than half the residents live below the poverty level, and less than a quarter of the homes are homesteaded. This project is a city-wide volunteer, business and resident effort to transform this neighborhood. Baseball Hall of Famer Hank Aaron and his wife, Billye, were special guests at the breakfast and are supporting the Coleman Park project.

Mayor Frankel issued a call to action: “I am asking everyone to add your name to the list and be part of an amazing dream come true. Donate a computer, become a mentor, help fix property or offer a job”. For more information about the Coleman Park project or to volunteer, visit www.wpb.org/coleman. In the spirit of the morning, Gunster will sponsor the gateway signs at Coleman Park in lieu of table centerpieces.

Thanks to the Dreyfoos School of the Arts Jazz Ensemble for providing music for the breakfast. Special thanks to our sponsors CityPlace Tower and CityPlace North and Carey O’Donnell PR Group for sponsoring the pre-event coffee.

InvestmentinBioscienceClusterOnTrackBy Russell Allen President and CEO BioFlorida, Inc.

The report issued in January by the Office of Program Policy Analysis and Government Accountability (OPPAGA) regarding Florida’s investments in biotechnology research institutes highlights the key facts and needs for developing a robust bioscience industry for Florida. The strategy is long-term in nature, and has attracted some of the most prestigious research institutes in the world right here in Palm Beach County and around the state. As the institutes ramp up their operations, we see a need for venture capital and assistance for early-stage companies. That’s the critical next step in transforming Florida into a knowledge-based economy.

Successful U.S. biotech hubs like Research Triangle Park in North Carolina grew organically over more than 40 years. Florida is accelerating the growth of its cluster through its investment in this sector, and has already been recognized as one of the most attractive regions worldwide for biotechnology businesses. Economic impact analyses predict that these research investments by the State of Florida and its regional economic development partners will be returned within 20 years by creating a minimum of 2,000 direct jobs at an average wage of over $67,000. So far, those wages average over $75,000 and these institutes will likely well exceed their minimum hiring plans. In addition, well over 25,000 jobs will be created within the larger industry sectors and related businesses, and Florida will see an increase in its tax revenues of $1.4 billion with $22.1 billion added to the gross state product because of these incentives.

In Orlando, Lake Nona Medical City is building an infrastructure to support thousands of jobs in biomedical research, healthcare and related services. That cluster is being created in large part because the state

partnered with Orlando-area businesses and government to attract the Burnham Institute for Medical Research. Catalyzed by that investment, the University of Central Florida, the Veterans Administration, University of Florida, Nemours Children’s Hospital and MD Anderson have built, or are building, facilities that will employ a new workforce to enhance regional and state economies. Those institute executives and the business community praise Florida for moving this development along at a pace that could not be achieved in many other states.

Now that we have enhanced the bioscience research base in Florida, we must consider the options presented in the OPPAGA report, including programs to improve our business climate to support emerging companies. A state-sponsored seed fund, matching grant programs and tax policies to encourage research and development will help to create an innovation economy in Florida. Representative Bill Galvano (R-Bradenton), Co-Chair of the Florida Legislative Biotechnology Caucus, agrees that if we make these types of programs our priority, we will see the industry mature as start-up companies evolve into profitable enterprises and more biotech companies choose to locate in Florida.

The purpose of the Innovation Incentive program is to allow the state to compete for high-value research & development and innovative businesses. In 2003, the State of Florida drew a line in the sand, sought buy-in from its economic partners around the state, and began to create a knowledge-based, innovation driver to compliment Florida’s economic engine. The result includes improved academic programs, a highly-skilled and highly-paid workforce and an industry that holds the promise to positively impact our quality of life.

About BioFloridaBioFlorida is the voice of Florida’s bioscience industry association, and represents 230 member companies and research organizations in the biotechnology, pharmaceutical and medical device fields.

SocialMediaMarketingforBusinessBy engaging in social media marketing, a company can reach a large audience through a more personable and accessible method.

Twitter:Short 140 character “tweets” all for an immediate interaction with your clients, fans and community. Tweets are intended to offer a more personal approach to marketing where you can see what people are saying about your company and provide immediate feedback. Twitter takes the phrase “word of mouth” to a whole new (and exciting!) level.

Facebook:Offering both individual accounts and company fan pages allow your business to interact with current and potential clients, post about upcoming events and specials and provide a constant presence in their day-to-day life.

Blogging: Having a company blog either as part of the website or on a separate site such as Wordpress allows you the opportunity to show off your expertise. Writing articles about the topic you know best gives your clients a place to go for information at all hours of the day. It’s important when writing a blog to be relevant, honest and consistent. Choose the topics you are going to blog about and stick to a regular schedule of posts whether daily, weekly or monthly. A blog also serves as a landing point for all of your other online venues.

For instance: Tweeting about an article you wrote drives traffic to your blog, which then has a link to friend you on Facebook and also displays a current promotion going on at your website.

Making social media part of your daily routine doesn’t have to take up a huge amount of your time. Set a few minutes aside in the morning to write out and schedule your Tweets. Pre-writing your blog and having set days to publish can also help with time management.

NewChamberEventGetsRaveReviewsOver thirty-five Chamber members and special guests attended the first One-on-One 101, hosted by the Chamber in January. One-On-One 101 is a new event to the Chamber calendar in response to members requesting more direction in developing relationships within the Chamber, forming strategic alliances for referrals and making the most of their Chamber investment. It’s a step-by-step approach to establishing a plan for setting meetings, following an agenda and tracking success. It takes networking contacts generated from events and directs them into productive one-on-one meetings.

The interactive format encouraged “shared brain power” as attendees worked on powerful introductions and building relationships. Led by Kelly Fanelli, the group learned how to set an agenda for a meeting, use formulas for monitoring results and setting goals and use networking opportunities to get the most productive meetings. How to get the right contacts, target marketing for those contacts and making sure you get the business you need out of time spent in meetings were all discussed in a fun and informal environment. “Kelly Fanelli 101” tips were scattered throughout the presentation and were among the favorite elements of the seminar.

Based on the success of the event, the next One-on-One 101 has been scheduled for Thursday, March 4, in the Chamber Boardroom. Seating is limited, so rsvp on the Chamber website, palmbeaches.org or contact Kelly Fanelli, Membership Director, at [email protected].

Over 90 attendees came out for the powerhouse networking event and were anything but blue. Blue Martini provided fabulous drink specials and delectable appetizers for the event. Each person was given a martini name at check in; the objective for the night was to find other individuals with the same name.

Throughout the night, free movie passes for the upcoming movie “sneak peak” premiere for “Dear John” were distributed. Each pass was good for two individuals for Wednesday, February 3rd.

The next YPOP committee meeting will take place on Wednesday, February 10th at 5:30 p.m. at the Chamber. At this meeting, a representative from the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life will be a guest speaker.

New2010ChamberLogoAvailableWhen purchasing items for themselves, their businesses and families, people are very comfortable doing business with Chamber members. In fact, the Chamber receives countless calls, e-mails and visitors to the Chamber lobby from consumers looking for reliable suppliers of all types of goods and services. It gives the Chamber the opportunity to direct referrals to Chamber members and assist people in their purchasing. It also gives members credibility in the eyes of the consumers. It signifies that they are serious members of the business community and that they support the professionalism the Chamber embodies.

How can you transfer that credibility to your storefront and your business’s website? The Chamber logo is a branded stamp of credibility that can appear on your door in the form of a sticker that informs visitors to your business that you are a member of the Chamber. There is also a Chamber logo available for your website that accomplishes that same goal in the virtual world. It contains the year 2010,

making it a strong indicator of your current involvement. It can be the element that encourages consumers to try your company over your competition. If you are a member of the Chamber, you can obtain your door sticker by contacting the Chamber at (561) 833-3711. A visit to the Chamber website will allow you to register for your website logo with your username and password.

As a Chamber member, you also have the opportunity to include a Chamber Member logo on certain brochures and marketing materials. For usage guidelines and approval process, please contact Alexandra Guth, Communications Coordinator, at [email protected] or (561) 833-3711 ext. 234.

Don’t miss these opportunities to use these powerful tools and their ability to set you apart from your competition. It’s an image that works for you and the consumer!

Member-to-MemberDiscountsCountHelping members to increase their business contacts, find new clients and become more profitable is not only the Chamber’s goal, but also its responsibility. Providing relevant and educational programming, excellent events and networking opportunities helps support members’ sales growth. The Chamber is always looking for ways to improve the benefits of membership and increase the value of participating in the Chamber.

In 2010, the Chamber will be improving the visibility and accessibility to member-to-member discounts. They can be free consultations, discounts or free offerings. The key is to offer a value that will prompt customers to try you ahead of your competition. Many new members to the Chamber are start-up companies who are very bottom line oriented. They need a lot of help and advice. Member-to-member discounts are very attractive to them and they may not have any pre-existing relationships or contacts to draw from when purchasing. Even if they are not start-up companies, the economy dictates that businesses control their expenses and re-examine their purchasing patterns.

As members, the businesses on the Chamber’s website enjoy access to the considerable traffic that comes to the Chamber’s site, www.palmbeaches.org. Keywords and phrases direct traffic to the businesses representing the products and services people are looking for. Why not make “Member-to-Member Discount” one of your keywords and phrases? Since you can update keywords and phrases with your username and password, you can even highlight special promotions and change them as your offerings change.

The Chamber will be focusing on member-to-member discounts in the next several months. There are new ways to find the discounts and help for members needing direction in developing them. It encourages members to do business with one another while keeping their expenses down. Develop a member-to-member discount and watch the traffic to your business grow and remember to look for them when doing business with other Chamber members.

If you or your company are interested in growing your business, I highly recommend joining the Chamber of the Palm Beaches. In the 3 years Schanel & Associates/CPA’s have been a member, I have seen our firm increase clients and revenues, partly due to getting involved in the chamber and taking advantage of its events and member to member benefits.

ToolsforSuccessSeminarsFocusonSocialMediaMarketingThe Tools for Success seminar series introduced in 2009 has been a huge success with Chamber members. The sessions addressing social networking have been among the best attended and garnered enthusiastic responses from those in attendance. There have been requests for more information and additional speakers working in this new marketing arena and the Chamber will be providing that in the months to come.

The “Google It” seminar, presented by Skunkworks Marketing Solutions, gave insights into methods for businesses to capture some of the 300 million searches per day that Google receives. They gave examples of how to use news articles to position for page one ranking on Google’s page and use social media to drive traffic to business’ websites. Sherry Chastaine, the presenter, stressed that everything a business needs to accomplish measurable results through social marketing is free on the internet. Expert advice is helpful in reaching goals quickly and more efficiently, but the same tools can be used by a business that has the time to do it themselves.

The Chamber’s February calendar includes a Tools for Success Seminar scheduled for Thursday, February 25 at 8:00 a.m. in the Chamber boardroom. Jody Underhill of Upside Down Iceberg will address “What Do I Do Next”, also the title of the presentation. He will be sharing information on building a social media brand, building a following as an expert and optimizing your social media time. Seating is limited; to rsvp for the event contact Kelly Fanelli, Membership Director at [email protected].

I always look forward to the educational opportunities that the Chamber offers. Sherry Chastaine of Skunkworks provided exceptional education on the Internet and simplifying how Google works. I left with new ideas on how to grow my business and how to dominate the search engine pages. Her expertise in Social Media Marketing is a key to prospering in our current economy. The Chamber continues it’s tradition of helping businesses to grow and members to share their cutting edge knowledge.
