After experiencing this bitterly cold and snowy winter, I’m putting my money on Nova Scotia’s “Shubenacadie Sam”, the groundhog who has predicted an early spring. (Sorry Skiers!) Our Social Events and Activities Committee has been active dreaming up things for us to do. On Sat. Feb. 3rd, Diane Grunwell and her dedicated volunteers ran a very successful “sold out” “Winter Blahs” party. Italian food was scrumptious, and the music was entertaining. Thanks to all the volunteers for their efforts and attention to detail. Again, I encourage you to involve yourself with some of our planned activities. It is a great way to meet new friends, and make this winter season more tolerable! In January, your Club initiated a meeting with the two Clubs in Lindsay. Up for discussion was ways in which we might co-operate to be mutually beneficial. You will hear more about this shortly. Later this month, the Management Team is conducting a special meeting to review how we function with all of our Social Media. We realize that there needs to be an assessment how it is functioning, and we want to explore ways in which we can improve. If you have any comments or suggestions, we invite you to pass them along to our Vice-President, Kathleen Beall, who is spearheading this review. See you on February 19th.

Another fun month has come and gone. Two new clubs were started - Learn to Curl and Chapters & Cheers - and our regular weekly activities continue to be enjoyed by all participants. We started February off with a BANG!!! The Fenelon Falls PROBUS Club sure knows how to shake away the “Winter Blahs” in style!! 60 people attended the event at St. James Anglican Church on February 3rd and enjoyed music by guitarist, singer and DJ, John Turner. A fabulous gourmet Italian feast was catered by “The Italian Hot Table” in Bobcaygeon, ending the meal with home-made cannolis! After dinner we invited two couples to begin the dance to celebrate their anniversaries: Dora & Randy Rainthorpe (40) and Mary & Syd

Sheffield (61). Between the two couples, they have been married 101 years - absolutely incredible! It didn’t take long for others to join in and everyone had a wonderful evening shaking away the Winter Blahs! See you on the 19th ... hope you can join us at our “Apres GM Luncheon” which will be held at “That Place on Cameron”.

Bev has lived in Fenelon Falls since 2010. She worked in the Accounting Department of Household Finance Head Office in Toronto, prior to her

marriage in 1975 to Ken and her moving from Scarborough to Etobicoke. In Etobicoke, she joined George Wimpey Canada. She continued in the Accounts Department until 1997, when she transferred to the Purchasing Department, as assistant to the purchasing manager. Bev retired in 2008. Bev and Ken have two daughters: Barbara---who lives in Mississauga and

works in the Operations Department at Pearson Airport, and Meredith, who lives in Whitby and is the office manager of a construction management company in East York. She is a 40+ year member of Bokhara Court No. 22 of the Ladies Oriental Shrine of North America, whose main goal is to raise funds to support the Shriners’ Hospital for Children – Canadian Unit, in Montreal. In 1997, Bev was president of the Great Lakes Unit Meet in Toronto. Bev tries to “play” the Jumbie Jam (a baby steel drum)…a challenge, because she cannot read music! Every Tuesday afternoon, you will find Bev at the Fenelon Falls Senior Centre enjoying Bid Euchre.

Like John Morris, during a visit to Australia and New Zealand in 1987, Bernard (Bud) Crookes became interested in Probus and was determined to introduce the concept to his community. In 1987, with the assistance of the Rotary Club of Collingwood, he was successful in forming the fourth Club in Canada, The Probus Club of The Georgian Triangle, now known as The PROBUS Club of Collingwood. Since that time, with his assistance and direction, Probus has expanded to nine Clubs in Collingwood. He also brought PROBUS to Wasaga Beach in September 1995 with the help of Rotarian KARL FUHRE and The Rotary Club of Wasaga Beach. Wasaga Beach now has five PROBUS Clubs. Between Collingwood and Wasaga Beach, with a total year-round population of approximately 37,000, there are now over 2,900 members in fifteen clubs. He was also involved in the promotion of fifteen PROBUS Clubs from Barrie to Bracebridge including Midland and Penetanguishene and west to Port Elgin.

Dorthy was born and raised in the big city of Toronto. After graduation, her whole working career has been involved in accounting.

For the first 7 years she was employed at Canadian Kodak as an accounting clerk. She then got married and moved to Vancouver, B.C. ln Vancouver, for the next 12 years she worked as office manager responsible for full cycle accounting procedures up to and including Financial Statements. Her co-workers became her second family, however, now being a single parent, she decided to return to Toronto. In Toronto, the next 13 years she worked for Pinetree Development (The Tannenbaum Group of Companies). There she was promoted to Assistant Controller. As well as her own accounting projects, she prepared year-end working papers for auditors, also completed a

variety of "on location" accounting projects as assigned by Management. One of her assignments was preparing year-end audits at their Shopping Mall. Upon dismissal of the Mall Manager, they temporarily put Dorthy in charge. Head Office then encouraged Dorthy to get her Shopping Centre Management certificate. For the next five years she was their Mall Manager and prepared annual budgets, monthly financial reports, administered leases and managed the operations of the Mall. After the company was liquidated and the mall sold, Dorthy successfully continued on in senior management and accounting positions until her retirement in 2009. Dorthy enjoyed being an active member of the York Lioness Club, and for last five years, was their treasurer. Dorthy moved to Fenelon Falls in 2010 and loves it here. She currently volunteers at Ross Memorial Hospital. Dorthy loves goats, cats and dogs.

Our speaker for January's meeting was extremely informative and relevant for the audience. Carolyn Hemminger, who is a Public Education Coordinator

for the Alzheimer Society, was introduced by Kathy Stackhouse and the topic was Heads Up For A Healthier Brain. Carolyn explained that dementia is on the rise perhaps because Baby Boomers are now seniors, and there is an increased awareness of dementia. She hoped that her talk would help us to help ourselves achieve better brain health. Carolyn told us it is neither too soon or too late to keep our brain healthy. Carolyn broke up the talk into 4 areas and gave us examples of things we could do to improve in each. The first was Healthy Lifestyle Changes. Make healthy food choices such as dark-coloured fruits and vegetables and omega 3 oils found in fish and canola oils. Remain active and have regular moderate physical activity. Keep track of your numbers such as blood pressure, weight, blood sugar and cholesterol. Reduce stress by practicing relaxation, meditation or other techniques. Laughing is good for us and try not to spend too

much time with negative people. Avoid smoking and excessive alcohol consumption. See your doctor regularly. Carolyn suggested that we needed to advocate for ourselves within the medical system. Don't let them put you off just because they say you are getting older. The next area was Challenging our Brain. Keep your brain active every day. Studies show that regularly challenging our brain may reduce our chances of developing Alzheimer's Disease, so it is important to give your brain a regular workout. Carolyn suggested trying something new such as using your opposite hand to brush your teeth or hair, as it stimulates the other side of your brain. Play games or pursue a new interest. The third section was Being Socially Active. Carolyn thought that as she sat through are meeting we were well on our way to staying socially active. Suggestions also were enjoying events with family and friends. Stay active in the workforce or become a volunteer, or possibly join an exercise group, a book club or hobby group.

The fourth section was Protect Your Head. Brain injuries, especially repeated concussions, are risk factors for the later development of Alzheimer's disease. By protecting your head you are caring for your brain today, and in the future. Carolyn suggested wearing approved helmets when engaging in sporting activities such as skating, curling, and

cycling. Check your house for safety hazards, install handrails, arrange for snow clearance and throw out the scatter rugs. Carolyn's talk was very interesting and gave us lots of suggestions to have a healthier brain. Carolyn volunteered to come back to talk to us about the many kinds of dementia. Carolyn was thanked by Kathleen Beall. Muriel Jones

Dale Hircock’s on Cameron Lake

A new book, a bottle of wine and great conversation with new friends…it doesn’t

get any better than that for a cold January afternoon. On January 17th, we ran two

“Chapters and Cheers” book clubs; one at Dale Hircock’s home on Cameron Lake

and one at the home of Fran Clarke in Bobcaygeon. About 8 women attended at

each location and had the opportunity to talk a little bit about the book that they

previously enjoyed and a new bottle of wine. After an afternoon of nibbling on ap-

petizers and drinks and chatting, each lady was able to select one of the books

that were brought and a bottle of wine to take home and enjoy!! As this is a new

format for a Book Club, we are still in the process of determining how it will run in

the coming months. But…one thing is for sure, everyone is already looking forward

to next month’s meeting.
