The Year of the Snake (sixth sign of the Chinese Zodiac)

begins February 10, 2013. People born in the Year of the Snake are considered to be thoughtful, wise, rational, logi-cal, and clever in business. Ancient Chinese wisdom says a Snake in the house is a good omen because it means your family will not starve. Families in Hawaii won’t have the op-portunity to put that to the test because our islands, thank-fully, are pretty much snake-free!

Regardless of how you feel about snakes, you can celebrate Chinese New Year at Wailea on Wednesdays, February 13th beginning at 6:30 p.m. with firecrackers, Lion Dancing, and a martial arts demonstration by Au’s Shaolin Arts Society. Did you know that Lion Dancing requires many hours of rehearsal and rigorous effort, and that Lion Dancers must have training in traditional kung fu for at least a year?

Au’s Shaolin has been named one of the top ten lion dance teams in the country for several years. Come experience this exciting and happy occasion and “feed” the lion for good fortune in the Year of the Snake!

I am always intrigued by the customs, traditions and lore of other countries. For example, contrary to popular belief, I found the peo-ple of England to be warm, friendly and the food quite good!

The Koreans have a unique custom of sharing a glass when drinking. After drinking up one’s glass, he or she fills it with whatever alcoholic beverage is being drunk and passes it to a colleague, who does the same thing after drinking it. In Japan, there are two gift seasons, called seibo and chugen. One is for winter and the other is for sum-mer. Another custom in Japan is for women to give men chocolate on Saint Valentine’s Day.

Our guests from India typically don’t wrap gifts in white or black colors, which are considered unlucky colors. Instead they use bright colors such as green, red, yellow. Russian women don’t like to sit at the corner of a table. If they do they will wind up single for the next seven years.

When our Canadian friends are dining, if they have finished their meal, are full and are offered more, most often their response is “I’m good.” I learned one of the more unique customs from when I worked for a Native American tribe for a number of years. When greeting and shaking hands, it is always important to have a light, almost faint grip. A firm grip is seen as a sign of aggression.

A custom that is universal regardless of country of origin is of course, gift giving, which equates to shopping – which is where we come in!

RENA PHILLIPS of BLACK PEARL

GALLERY began her career at the Gal-lery in 2001 when the Shops at Wailea opened. Passionate about pearls, Maui-born Rena takes pride in sharing her knowledge and aloha with visitors and kama‘aina alike.

“When I was born, the elders gave me the Hawaiian name ‘Leimomi,’ which means garland of pearls,” said Rena. “There is no doubt that I’m exactly where I belong.”

Rena studies Hawaiian language and culture, dances hula, loves to walk the South Maui beaches with her husband Scott, and says being surrounded by the most beautiful pearls in the world on the most enchanting island any-where makes her life just perfect.
