ALOHA TO OUR NEWEST MERCHANT

Idiom: You can catch more flies with honey than with vinegar.

This simply means that it is easier to persuade people if you use polite arguments and flattery than if you are acerbic and confrontational. Regardless of what you do for a living – butcher, baker or candlestick maker – you are as much a customer as is the customer walking into your store. I think everyone would agree that it is important to employ a friendly and not overbearing approach to your customer. It is no less important to practice the same approach when the shoe is on the other foot. For example, how many times have you initiated the greeting when checking out at the supermarket? Or as you’re paying the parking attendant at the Kahului Airport? (Works great when I’ve had to pay with a credit card and the cars are stacking up behind me.) Try it sometime and you might be surprised how much it changes the dynamic.

Same goes for the airline staff at the check-in counter. I always initiate the greeting asking how they are doing. Why bother? Because these people see countless numbers of cranky, rushed, sometime unpleasant people all day long. How you approach them can make a difference in their day. I once booked a flight leaving on the wrong day, showed up at the airport a day early and had to figure out a way to make the flight that I hadn’t booked correctly in the first place.

The result? I was able to get on the flight without so much as a change fee. Turned out the correct flight was over-sold and it worked out for both of us. What do you think would have happened had I employed a cranky school-marm approach? If I had been able to make the flight it wouldn’t have been cheap. Now I’ve had more than a few times when I have had to bite my tongue. But I find that not unlike golf; it’s all in the approach.
