View from the Pew! Although Christmas seems far behind us, it is customary for us to report on the seasonal events at All Saints. First of all, our Mince Pie and Coffee morning at the beginning of December raised a record £409.00. We would like to thank all those who helped us especially the ladies working in the kitchen and others who supplied delicious mince pies, coffee and mulled wine. Thanks also to the stallholders and any others who helped us on the day.

The Lights to Remember service was as usual a peace-ful and thoughtful time to reflect on the lives of those of our loved ones departed this life. £67.00 was raised for Marie Curie Cancer Care and a letter of thanks has been received from their community fundraiser which is print-

ed within these pages.

The carol service was as popu-lar as ever with all those well known tunes and readings. It was lovely to see the church so full with friends old and new. Thank you again to the ladies who supplied and served the

delicious Christmas cake and mulled wine afterwards. John Dillistone played the organ so beautifully for us and it was good to see and hear him again. Those worthy souls who sang carols round the village raised £169 for SAS. Thank you everyone who gave so generously.

Our crib service was once again led by Jill. Numbers were down on previous years but perhaps this is be-

cause we held the service the day before the usual time on Christmas Eve. Thank you to Angus who played the organ on this occasion and for covering for Peter while he has been unwell. We wish Peter a speedy recovery - we miss his cheery self! Thanks also go to Derek Billings who led the Eucharist on Christmas Day.

A word of thanks is also due to the gen-tlemen (you know who you are!) who have formed themselves into a working party, ably led by Pete Elliott, doing jobs in and around the church. We are so grateful for your help and support.

Of interest, you may like to read the Lichen Survey re-port on the church done by Mark Powell of the British Lichen Society. It is posted in the church notice board. See if you can find the interesting feature he mentions in his report.

Our thoughts now turn to the year ahead and events on the church's calendar. Our family services on the first

Sunday of each month are a nice way in which those of you who perhaps haven't been to church for a while and would like to, can come and join us in a relaxed way. We usually have a simple service with a bible reading, popular hymns, a short time for prayers and an interesting talk by a member of the laity, usually Jill or Hazel. At the end we always have lovely cake

and coffee and an opportunity to have a friendly gossip. It would be lovely to see some fresh faces and you will be assured of a warm welcome.

PARISH NEWS…

December 2012/January 2013

The Parish Council is back up to full strength with the co-option of Mrs Jen-ny Barnes. Jenny has lived in Grafham for just over a year and is very enthusi-astic about supporting our community. Jenny is also a founder member of the Grafham Shop committee. Jen-ny was welcomed to the Council and we all look forward to working with her.

In November, your clerk attended a Funding Fair in Newmarket, to listen to and learn about funding oppor-tunities which are open to local councils and other groups. This was particularly relevant to the Parish Council who are hoping to raise funds to refurbish and extend the village hall, and to the Grafham Shop com-mittee who are looking for funds to purchase their initial premises sand to set up the operation. At the fair, the District Councillor for Gamlingay gave a very interesting

talk about the experiences of Gamlin-gay Parish Council in taking on the pro-ject of transforming a derelict building into the “Gamlingay Hub” - a building central to the community and designed for various activities. This project has much in common with the project for Grafham.

It was interesting to note that the Big Lottery represent-atives reassured everyone that there is still money available for grants. Important lessons were given about applying for funds in such a way as to ensure success.

At the moment there are no costings for the proposals at the village hall. However, a quantity surveyor will be engaged to provide these.

At the time of writing this article, there has been no Jan-uary meeting. The next Parish Council meeting will be held on 12th February 2013. A representative from Luminus Homes is expected to attend to talk about their scheme of Street Representatives.

Eats Shoots and Signs Church Road has been blessed for the last month or so with a special sign on a pallet warning everyone that there is a “Slow Sponsored Walk”.

Do we know? a) Is this only for tortoises (who are hibernating anyway)? b) When this slow walk will end? c) What is the maximum speed that walkers may go? d) Who organised the sponsored walk?

The latter point is perhaps most relevant as perhaps the organisers would like to remove their sign when the tortoises have finished their circuit of Grafham Water!

Has there been a general decision taken that it is now ok to exercise dogs on the village playing field? There seem to be more and more people using the playing field to exercise their dogs. There is still a sign up in the car park say-ing "no dogs" however, this is either not clearly visible or being ignored. As you walk around the streets in Grafham you can see that not everyone picks up their dog's mess; can we be sure that these people are cleaning up after their dogs? Should we be warning children and sports teams to look out for dog mess? The playing field has al-ways been for the use of families and sports teams; we have always respected this and not walked our dog there. Has this changed? Are dogs now welcome there? If so, please could the "no dogs" sign be removed, or, if this is not the case maybe a new and bigger sign would clear up this confusion?

Every evening 280 people throughout the UK will open their front door to a Marie Curie Nurse who has come to help them at the time that they need it most. Our care enables cancer patients to stay in the familiar surroundings of their own homes with their loved ones as their illness progresses.

Last year alone Marie Curie Cancer Care provided over 20,720 hours of nursing care for more than 500 people in Cambridgeshire. However the demand for our services increases each year and for every family we help, there is another that we can't. Every hour of a nurse's time costs the charity £20, so you can see just how valuable your support is.

NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH Finally, after years of campaigning to the council and councillors, traffic police have started monitoring speed-ing traffic on Buckden Road leaving the village. The speed limit is 60 mph and everyone should be aware of this. On 6th December a car was involved in an accident on the single track road below the village hall. The Police were involved and it appears the cause of the vehicle going off the road into the verge was bad weather.

On 14th December a shed and garage were broken into, at a property in Breach Road, using bolt croppers to gain entry.

Grafham’s Little Blacksmith’s Shop

Just down Church Road on the right hand side

stands Grafham’s little Blacksmiths Shop. The

last blacksmith to own this building was Ben

Bateman who also owned the smithy at Ellington.

Ben only opened for business on a Thursday

which always raised the attention of the village;

sometimes local boys worked the forge bellows

for Ben. Only small jobs were undertaken at

Grafham with the major work carried out at his

Ellington shop.

The Biography of Heinz Kummer ...

A new, locally based book has just been published which partly deals with the two St Neots German pris-oner of war camps containing unique photos and maps. The book is entitled ‘The Biography of Heinz Kummer, a German prisoner of war – a life deeply touched by war’. Heinz still lives in St Neots and visits Easton Church for its ‘Big Breakfast’.

The book tracks the life story of Heinz from birth to the present day. The character of a young Heinz, brought up on a farm near Dresden, is highlighted. He was captured after D-Day aged 17. It contains a large section on the use of PoWs on local farms during and after the war. Action occurs as far afield as Chile, Po-land, Denmark, Siberia, D-Day, Northern Ireland, and gives a most unusual perspective of the war from the German side. There are many unknown revelations, such as why there were Englishmen in a Siberian Gu-lag prison camp as late as the 1970s. There is a refer-ence to the ghost of Lymmage Farm, now under Grafham Water.

This hard-backed dust-jacketed book contains 128 pages, 70 illustrations, 7 maps and a full index. It is excellently priced at £12.99 and is available from Cat-worth Village Shop and St Neots Waterstones Bookshop. It has been written by John Slack, ex-teacher at Longsands Academy. His previous book ‘The Secret Life of St Neots Station’ was a bestseller for 5 months at Waterstones. This new book contains 60 sections, not difficult chapters, so it is easy to delve into for a few minutes at a time. It is soundly recommended by a university vice chancellor, an Ox-ford English graduate.

New home for Riverside Theatre Company Riverside Theatre Company is moving home from Sunday 3rd February.

The well-established charitable musical theatre group for children and young people from St Neots and sur-rounding areas is relocating to The Priory Centre from St Neots Football Club which has been its home in recent years.

Chris Glenton, Chair of Riverside said: "We have had some happy years at St Neots Football Club and we are grateful for all the support we have had from them in that time.

"The time has come to move on and we have taken this opportunity to relocate to The Priory Centre in the town centre, which is a key production venue for us."

Just two weeks after the move to The Priory Centre, the venue will host Riverside’s latest production, Aladdin on Saturday 16th February. Performed en-tirely by young people aged six to 13 the show has been in rehearsal since September.

Chris added: “There are two shows on 16th February, at 2pm and 7pm. It promises to be an amazing production, the cast and tutors have worked really hard to make this their best production yet.”

Michael Bublé Tribute Night We raised a fantastic £306.61 towards the Village Hall refurbishment from the Michael Bublé Trib-ute Night. It was a fantastic night and everyone seemed to have a really good time.

We often take a walk from Grafham along Brampton Lane, sometimes to the railway bridge and sometimes to

the Brampton Wood car park. It's a pleasant walk, as long as an ear is kept open for the traffic.

We've noticed an increase in the amount of rubbish accumulating on the verges, sadly it does appear to be a

growing problem, but today's walk highlighted a specific culprit, I believe. Close to the Brampton Wood car

park I spotted a discarded carton of Camel cigarettes. Close by, but looking a little more worse for wear, was

another carton of the same brand. Camel is an American brand and, I suspect, is not commonly found here.

Yet, here were two cartons in close proximity.

On the way back home, in the short distance between the car park and the railway bridge, we spotted 11 of

the discarded Camel cartons. Undoubtedly there were many more out of immediate eyesight. They

were in various states of decay, suggesting someone regularly throws them whilst driving or walk-

ing along that part of the lane.

So, who could be conducting this one-man attempt to bury Brampton Lane in Camel droppings? Could it be

one of our American guests from a local base? Could it be a local person with a taste for "something

exotic?”

To them, and to anyone who defiles the verges by throwing litter instead of carrying it

to a bin, please consider the effect on the wildlife and on the beauty of our country lanes.

This is an exciting opportunity, for a Level 2 Playworker or equivalent, to join our existing team as an Out Of School Club assistant from February 2013 until December 2013. The successful candidate will work as an effective member of Spaldwck Out of School Club team delivering a flexible, high quality, education and care centred service that meets the need of the young children, aged 4 -12 years and their families.

The Out Of School Club runs 5 days a week 3pm to 6pm term time. We also offer a holiday club 8.30am to 6pm - all half terms, all Easter holidays, all teacher training days, 4 weeks in the summer and 1 week at Christ-mas. There is also the possible opportunity of more holiday club hours. 12.5+ hours per week over 5 days (term time) and flexible hours during holiday club. In line with the Local Safeguarding Children's Board guidelines, the successful applicant will be subject to an enhanced Criminal Records Bureau check.

Conman in artwork ruse A doorstep conman sold a pic-ture to an elderly resident and made off with his cash without handing over the artwork.

The fraudster called at the man's home in Priory Close, Needingworth, at noon on Sun-day, 2nd December.

He did not speak but handed over a large display folder of pic-tures which claimed he was sell-ing hand-drawn pictures to fund

his daughter's education in Huntingdon.

The 82-year-old victim agreed to buy one and handed over £10, however, the man made off quickly without handing over the picture.

He is described as well tanned, 5’7”, and wore a green old-style army rain coat and a red beanie hat. Detective Sergeant Jim Donington said: "We are concerned this man may be targeting elderly or vulnerable people and I am keen to trace him as soon as possible.“ "I would urge people not to purchase goods from door-step salesmen and if they are in any doubt about an unexpected visitor to their home, do not open the door."

• Keep lights, mirrors and windows clean and clear of

obstructions.

• Ensure your tyres have enough sufficient tread and

the pressure is correct.

• Always wear a seatbelt.
